  1. Does she go in the nest box at all? I would put a couple of fake eggs in the box so that she won't be able to break them before it becomes too much of a habit, also as long as she hasn't sat on them you can take the real eggs out for up to a week and store them until she seems to be settled on the fakes and then add them in..
  2. It could just be his temperament. You should compare notes with Angelic Vampire, she as a little bloke called Buddy that she got from me who chews and carries on a bit. We reckon he's just your budgie version of a labrador puppy
  3. If you like the idea of having a tree do what I'm going to do. Find a nice thick dead branch with smaller sturdy branches coming out of it and turn it into tree by putting the base in a large bucket and filling the bucket with cement. Drill some holes in the 'tree' and poke live branches into them, that way when they have eaten all the branches off it you can just put new ones in the drilled holes
  4. Your best bet is actually to find some trees in your area that are budgie safe and 'trim' them every now and then. If you use a piece of plastic pipe with one end blocked and wire on the top (so the budgies can't get into it. Then attach it to the side of the aviary with some wire and fill it with water, then you can add plants for them and replace them when they get chewed. I'm not sure what you have over there but most of the common Aussie plants like Acacias(wattles), eucalypts, tea trees, bottlebrush, etc are fine. Also Jacaranda is fine and is common all over.
  5. Be aware that any plants you put in there will get eaten. I have tried putting tough native grasses in there and they chewed them to the ground in about two days.
  6. I want to work in Environmental Education (think the guys that do the bird flight shows at Healesville, etc) but I am actually already working for the Vic Dept of Sustainability as a Spatial Analyst. I was working part time while I was studying and they have now made me full time. I am creating a fine scale computerised land use history for the whole of Victoria. Its a really exciting project which will be used by people in many areas of government and also in the private sector when planning environmental projects. It will probably result in my getting my name in the odd scientific journal or two as well, which as those who have studied science will know is pretty exciting.
  7. It is a Bachelor of Conservation, Biology and Ecolgy majoring in Botany and Aquatic Ecology
  8. My results weren't supposed to be available until Monday arvo, I got up this morning and they were in my email!!!! After a moments freak out because the first subject listed was listed a fail (it was one I did a few years ago and had to repeat but had a VERY similiar subject code to the one I did this semester) I then realised I was looking at the wrong subject and it turns out I did pass after all That was my last subject so now I am officially a university garduate! Celebrate good times, come on! Doo doo da doo, doo doo, doo dooooo, whahoooo
  9. I am heading off on my honeymoon during the last week in August and need my pets cared for. I'm a little iffy about paying a local kid to do it given we have lots of birds(I'm worried about them letting the birds loose by accident plus I'm not sure how confident they would be about going into the aviary with the galahs even though they are friendly), plus the other critters. I am wondering if anyone would be interested in housesitting my nice clean, comfy house for about five days in return for caring for my pets. We are well set up for kids so happy for a whole family to come, heck you can bring the rellies if you like there are two queen size beds in seperate rooms(one with a single bunk on top), plus the kids room which has a single bed and one or two cots and another spare room with a single bed so thats 7 bed spaces plus two cots!!! We have two (generally) well behaved dogs which I am happy to get the kids across the road to walk if you didn't want to, one cat, a free range rabbit, blue tongues and the birds. I would of course set food supplies up so you didn't have to do much preparation, just a daily check and food top up would be the minimum, more at your own discretion. We are a two minute walk to buses and a five minute bus ride/20min walk to the closest train station, 20min drive to the city in good traffic. So anyone interested in a cheap holiday in Melbourne
  10. I don't mind mine getting a few fattier seeds in winter, this time of year mine get sunflower seeds as treats. Probably not so necessary for strictly indoor birds though...
  11. Yeah I don't drink either. How about a V and a jumbo pack of M & M's (peanut of course)
  12. Wait till Sunday when we have to drag aviary panels off a trailer!!! I promise a cup of hot chocy when we are done
  13. Givn she has a history I suspect she is just looing to nest. If you give her an open topped nest on the floor made out of something like a cut down icecream container you might actually get a clutch out of her AND get her to sit on them
  14. It's driving me crazy Neat, who sung that?
  15. My oldest son used to sleep in the dog crate when I took my kelpie to herding days :hap: We'd take the crate and set it up and when he got tired he'd crawl in there and shutthe door and go to sleep, he never had to worry about the flies
  16. Honestly you pay a wing and a leg for a cut and blue rinse and this is what you get!
  17. If she seems otherwise healthy maybe she is just thinking about nesting on the bottom of the cage.
  18. Has she got egg bum to indicate that there could be an egg there?
  19. I'm a nasty mum that dishes those uneaten vegies up to them for breakfast the next morning! I also give them a set time to eat their dinner. They used to muck around over their dinner but now they eat it because they know it'll only be there for a limitted time and then it will be gone!!!
  20. I may get one or to off him at some stage so if I'm heading over there I will let you know and you can just come for a look. It would be a good way to just compare the larger species of birds kinda side by side and work out what you want in the future. I PROMISE I won't let you buy anything
  21. I have been keeping my breeding brds inside this winter, it has been sooooo cold. When I start breeding in my new bird room I'm going to have a night light as well as heat lamps for my breeding cages. A night light is a good investment as Kaz said. If the hen gets scared out of the nest for some reaso it means she will be able to find her way back in.
  22. Sorry darls I didn't mean to sound like I was rushing you. He won't be breeding until after winter so I actually meant come spring
  23. As another thought too. The bloke who sold me my galah hen is over in Melton and he has HEAPS of amazing aviaries with all sorts of parrots in them. He was happy to sell me some babies udring the breeding season this year if I was interested and also said he would do a good price if I could take them fairly early and finish raising them. If you like I can see if I can track him down and find out what he will have available. He had everything from kings and eccys to Major Mitchells and ringnecks. The place was IMMACULATE and he even grows his own organic fruit and veg for them so I know you would only get a healthy bird from him.
  24. Atleast she is showing an interest in the vegies, even if it is only play at this stage. She'll be chowing down on them before you know it
  25. Also someting else to keep in mind when you look at Ivan's one. The way it is behaving now will change when it matures in a few months. They hit a rebelious stage just like a teenager and they can go a little silly. If you get one that is atleast a couple of years old and which still has a great temperament then it's probably won't change much.
