Gerald Binks was saying that with his first Aviary/Breeding Room his local council wanted it built to a standard of fireproofing and he used asbestos sheeting on the walls of his breeding room and inside flights. The biggest concern he had was covering all the joins so the birds couldn't eat it.

Spent a bit of time with a show breeder on Monday who has a number of the yellow TCB budgies. He always pairs with Lutinos to improve that buttercup colour.

He no longer sells to Australia as he has given BirdKeeper Magazine the rights to sell here. He is a very lovely man and ever so full of friendly advice. I would love to travel to the UK one day to meet him. For those of you who already have a copy of The Challenge here is an extract from one of the emails he sent me: Now there is some great advice from one of the worlds best. I found this very interesting. Robert Manvell, one of Australias top breeders of show budgies, puts an icecream container half full of rice husks inside his nest box for his young. He says that it helps to keep the babies dry and clean. Seems even the 'experts' go outside of the norm in some areas. In some ways it is real but in actuality it is a publicity stunt that has managed to keep getting good old Sheriff Joe Arpaio re-elected for quite some time. Sure he's a tough man but the press really have had a field day with him over the years. All prisons in the US have to comply with the United Nations Minimum Standards for operations of Prisons and are regularly monitored by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Maricopa County Jail is no different to any other. Sherrif Joe actually has seven jails under his jurisdiction. I have visited prisons in America but never got to Arizona to meet the good Sherriff. I would have liked to have and expect it would have been good to talk to him. Here is a photo. Got to admit, I saw some pretty miserable looking birds at the show yesterday. You are going to have to watch the rest of them now so that whatever he had hasn't been passed on to the rest of them. Could end up losing the lot of them.
