I think this a two sided argument that will never go away and there will be people with both views. Doctors now agree that we have been prescribing antibiotics far too much for far to long for humans and this has resulted in bacteria becoming more immune to it and thus creating worse variants of the bacteria or super bugs. As such, antibiotics should never be used in humans as a preventative. What doctors should do is conduct tests first to see what bacterial infections are present then treat accordingly. Yes, I know there are two proponents to that argument as well. In saying the above one would have to also question the use of antibiotics in a similar way with birds and not just budgerigars. Should one not take the necessary steps in the quarantine process to also have a vet conduct the tests to determine if there are any issues requiring treatment and then act accordingly. My concern is that through the indiscriminate use of antibiotics there is going to be created within aviaries and studs a variant of a super bug that will eventually wipe out the flocks in this country. Thoughts to ponder I guess.
  10. Hey Emma, did you miss this. I would be interested in ring colour as well. Derek
  11. Is it an albino???? I have copied and expanded that photo and it doesn't appear to have a red eye.Very nice birds from a pet shop. Edit: Had to post an edit because I would be interested in Daz's & Kaz's opinion of the yellow face. Looks like an exceptionally good bird to me just as that photo is even without you saying it doesn't do it justice.

Wouldn't all that baking destroy the proteins in the seed??
  13. Same post has appeared on Budgerigars.Co.Uk http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=18389 A renown British Expert and former Budgerigar Show Judge has given his opinion over there. Didin't you like what you got???????????? Those Japanese Helicopter mutations look kinda weird to me. Your photos are to big for this forum by the way.
  14. To small for a Rosie I think.

My budgies never ever had more than ten eggs so I could never see the sense in numbering them as I could easily count them using my fingers.
  16. Yep, need a clearer photo for sure. Does however look like it has the shape of a red rump and there is a blue mutation of them.

Hi Daz As you know I have visited your aviary a couple of times now. If you had your time over again, what would you do differently, if anything. What would you change with the electrics? Would you consider running water and a sink. By the way congratulations on all the council approvals. Derek
  18. The size of flocks vary from season to season but still heaps here.
  19. Are you talking about here or New Zealand. Here there are countless millions of them. Flocks so large they can shut out the sun as they pass overhead.

If I were you I would drag everything out of the aviary and I mean everything. Then give your brick floor a good scrub with water and disinfectant. Dig out the dirt down to about 30 centimetres and fill it back up with clean river sand. Instead of Lucerne, which has a habit of generating heat and mold, use some good clean straw. Let it sit for a couple of weeks before you put birds back in it.

Hi Barbara and welcom to the forum. You could try a crumble. It is more a soft food and in fact can be a complete diet. Details below of Vetafarm Budgie Crumble Product Name: FINCH CRUMBLES Product Size: 450g Price (AUD): $9.65 Ingredients: Manufactured from whole cereal grains including maize, wholegrain legumes, groats, amino acids, lysine and methionine, salt, vitamins A, D3, E, K, B12, thiamine, riboflavin, panthothenic acid, pyridoxine, folacin and biotin, minerals, calcium, phosphorus, cobalt, iodine, copper, iron, manganese, zinc and selenium and natural organic acids. Guaranteed Analysis: Min Crude Protein 19.0% Min Crude Fat 7.0% Max Crude Fibre 3.5% Added Salt 0.1% Available Sizes: 450g, 2Kg, 10Kg Directions: For conversion from seed if gradual, mix 50:50 seed to crumbles. Allow all seed to be eaten before adding more mix. Birds should be consuming the crumbles within 3-4 days. Once crumbles are being eaten, eliminate seed. Conversion may be sudden, simply remove all seed and replace with crumbles. Ensure familiar feed dishes and feeding locations are retained. Birds may appear fluffed for 2-3 days while their systems adjust but should return to normal within a week. For soft feeding add hot water to a small amount of crumbles, stir and supply in place of normal soft foods. As birds take to this food, decrease the water added and begin reducing the amount of seed supplied. Birds will convert shortly. Water must be available at all times as birds on Finch Crumbles consume more water than seed eating birds. (Allow for extra water consumption when using in-water medications. 25. Feral cats have been able to adapt to pretty well all terains. However feral cats are more prolific in the desert and arid areas where they seem to be able to breed very quick. I recall a few years back when the army went out to try and do something about the feral cat population. Killed many of them yet seemed to have no effect on the overall poulation. They are like a multiplying disease
