Different Shaped Heads
I think its fair to say there is a reason that wild budgies are the way they are... Interestingly enough, I read a study that was done in Florida about wild budgerigars that had either been released deliberately or had escaped and became feral. They now are living freely and the study found that in the beginning there were birds of varying colours, however after a period of time, I believe it was a matter of years from memory, they were all green except for very minimal blue birds. The study didn't mention size or feather but I would imagine that the lighter more flightier birds would've been the ones that survived. Gotta find the website where the study was on... It was the University of Florida or something...

Pink Budgie
Cull/petshop topics too > No way how can you say that??? You see its become clear to me that no matter how many times we tell people it's impossible to breed a pink budgie, people who know better will say it is SOOO... let them spend their whole life trying, infact, give them hope so they keep at it (because lets face it after 50 years they'll probably want to give up). And guess where they'll find the perfect birds to do it... ... ... Did you say Petshops??? YES!!!! YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!! The birds you need to breed pink (or red or scarlet or any other shade of red you can think of) are for sale at your local pet shop!!! I feel like saying, "I'm Big Kev and I'M EXCITED!"

Show Budgerigar Breeder Interviews
Yes thanks PT! I had to go to the iTunes store and download the 'Convert Units for free' Application For some reason a persons height MUST be in Feet and Inches and babies weight in pounds, but everything else MUST to be metric for me to have any clue about space or weight... Call me - Everyone else does Great interview!

Split from Original Topic
Well didn't we get carried away while I was offline... I can agree with you cranberry if your arguement is: Not all breeders are good. But it seems that your opinion of breeders is somewhat negative due to experiences you've had with other bird species breeders. This I have no opinion on because lets face it once you've got budgies everything else is second rate. in my short experience with breeders of budgies I've found them to be very helpful and far better than any dealer. That's my experience, sorry that your experience hasn't been as pleasent as mine... Maybe move to Melbourne where you can get many great birds from many great breeders. there's a reason why VIC is going to win Nationals in QLD this year... Hahaha

Split from Original Topic
I think it might be in the best interest for dealers to tell you this so that you keep going to them? I have no doubt that some breeders will cull bad birds to new people in the hobby but that is a minority and really it's not in their best interest. You sell me good birds and I'll be back, you sell me bad birds and I won't be... P.S. I can't believe it took me 5 minutes to type that reply...

Great picture Dingo! Submit it for the BOM comp!

Split from Original Topic
I tend to Agree with KAZ, PT and macka. I would say most breeders would sell all that they can privately and then sell what they can't to pet stores/dealers on the cheap. If the dealer sold you a bird at $15 they are only paying $5-$10 for that bird.

I'm A Bit Confused With This Chick.
Can you get photo's of them out of the nestbox? Thats the biggest problem we don't see enough of the birds to make a call one way or another.

Starting To Breed Show Budgies
I agree with the others... go to an auction and check out the birds, visit some local breeders, go to some club meetings, join a club and then purchase.

Auction At Revesby Nsw
Last week at Eastern Districts I think 3 birds went for over $1000 the top price was $1600. At Geelong the top price was $700 or something. Predicting prices is like betting on horses, but not just betting on a winner, but also betting on by what length it'll win by...

Auction At Revesby Nsw
Depends on the bird NOWBUDGIE, could be $20 could be $100, could be $500, could be $1000... you get my point?

Mutation Question
It doesn't me nothing. If Hulk is paired to a normal all cocks produced from this pairing with LOOK normal. Some Hens will look normal and other Hens will be Opaline. Some of the cocks will be split Opaline but the only way you will be able to tell is if you breed with them. Visually they will all look the same. And bear in mind it is only a 25% chance that you will get any cocks that are split to opaline. So just because you have 4 chicks it doesn't mean that you will have 1 of each possibility, you may get all normal cocks and all normal hens (you have a pied gene involved in this pairing so some 'normals' may be pied and some 'opalines' may be pied too but that just complicates the %'s even more ) Are you confused yet? It's all pretty simple once you get your mind around the basics, but then if you're like me and don't keep reminding yourself you get confused again.

Black King Penguin
wow. there's hope for the all black budgie yet. That is awesome.

Mutation Question
robyn, if you look at your previous pairing of Hulk you will see you had 7 from 8 opaline chicks. The only chick that wasn't was a hen and she was normal, right? Opaline is a sex linked gene, So... If Hulk was Opaline all the chicks would've been opaline, not just 7 out of 8. The reason why we can say it is Hulk that isn't Opaline is: a) we've seen a picture the chick that wasn't Opaline was a hen. Kaz, why would you get split Opaline cocks from a Normal/Opaline cock X Normal hen? shouldn't you only get Opaline Hens, Normal Hens and Normal Cocks?

Is This A Good Breeding Setup?
here's the like to Daz's designs, as I said I didn't follow these to a T but they certainly pointed me in the direction I wanted to go... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=28320
