Kelani ( who i got from you) is the hen and Konani was a beautiful cobalt normal i bought only 4 months ago was the male who flew away. So far i have 3 fertile eggs, it is too early to candle the other 2. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that what i am trying will work, the male has raised 3 clutches before so he is experienced.

This is the hen's first clutch so i am not sure what she is like as a mother that is why i did not want to let her raise them by herself. She is only just started laying the eggs so she still has 12 days before the first egg is due to hatch which hopefully gives plenty of time for the pair to develop a bond.

On the weekend my kids accidently let one of my male budgies out of his breeding cabinet and he flew away, i left a cage out hoping he would come home but he has not yet. The hen is sitting on 5 eggs and i did not want her to have to raise them by herself so i thought i would try to give her a new male, one i have bred with before who is a great father. She accept him which is really great and he bonded with her very quickly and is feeding her and going in the nestbox and sitting on the eggs. I hope he continues taking on a fatherly role even though the babies will not be his.

i have had not had much success with my pairs. I put 3 pairs together so i would have foster parents if something went wrong but only 1 pair is breeding. The first pairs eggs were infertile because the hen went to the nest before bonding with the male. i have removed her eggs, nestbox and male and will rest her for a few days and then try again. The second pair are going well, she has 4 eggs and i have candled the first 2 and one is fertile which is great. The third pair are both spending heaps of time in the nest box but still no egg. I did have another pair i tried as well a few weeks ago but she laid 3 eggs and then broke and ate them. Hopefully things will improve soon.

Thanks for the advice, She started laying on the 14th so i have candled the first 3 and they are infertile so i think the rest would be as well seeing she is more interested in the nestbox than the male.

I have a hen sitting on 5 eggs and i know the first 2 eggs are infertile and i am fairly certain the rest will be as well. They all have very big off centre air pockets in them. The reason i believe they are infertile is because she went to the nestbox too early, before she had bonded with the male. I am wondering what is the best thing to do, should i remove the eggs and nestbox and give her a few days bonding with the male and then reintroduce the nestbox. She has had a clutch before so i know she is fertile.

The container has a lid on it that slides shut so i fill the container with water and shut the lid. After they had drowned i buried the bodies.

I have had a problem with mice coming into my breeding room so i have traps set but i am not catching them. i have this tall plastic square container that i use for putting seed into the bird containers. On the weekend i forgot to put it back into my big seed bin and left it on the floor of the room and the next morning i found 2 mice in the bottom of the container. They had got in but could not climb back out. Last night i decided to put some cheese in the container and leave it out again and see if i could catch some more. I went to my breeding room this morning and found 4 mice in the container. Yeah. Works better than a trap, i can catch more than one at a time.
  10. Thanks kaz, i will be able to tell hubby i can have more budgies seeing i have the room for them.
  11. i have been offered some more budgies and i am wondering how many budgies i can comfortable fit in my aviaries. One aviary is 2.4m x 1.2m and 1.8m high, the other aviary is 2.4m x 1.8m and 1.8m high. i currently have 15 budgies in each aviary.

Which birds are you concerned about it? i know i am not sure of Ozzie's age but he has been interacting with the hens in the aviary so i decided to give him a try. Kelani is paired with a new bird Konani who does look exactly like Romeo jr, the only way i can tell them apart is that He has bigger throat spots than Romeo. I will candle them.

My first pair, df white spangle hen and green recessive pied male and they have 3 eggs at the moment One egg looks bigger than the other two. My second pair, skyblue opaline cinnamonwing hen and cobalt normal male and they have 1 egg so far. My third pair, skyblue cinnamonwing hen and blue recessive pied male. They are both in the nestbox alot but no eggs yet.

The hen was the one with egg on her face, which is disappointing because she is one i handraised so i really wanted to see how she would be as a mother. Hopefully if i wait a few more months before i try her again she will be more successful.

Yesterday i found that my pair that had 3 eggs had broken them all. I noticed the male had been going into the nest box with the female, is it usually the male or female that breaks eggs. I have decided to put the pair back into the aviary seeing the hen is 16 months olds, she was showing signs in the aviary that she wanted to breed but i think i will wait till spring before i try her again.
  17. Well, it will be interesting to see what colours i end up with seeing i have no idea what type their parents were.
  18. If i pair a df white spangle hen with a green recessive pied cock will i be able to get green spangle babies. i know that they will all be carrying pied but what other outcome could there be?
  19. I went this morning to feed the budgies in the breeding cabinet and noticed the hen that was fighting with the male i gave her yesterday was going in and out of the nestbox. I check the nestbox and got a surprise, she has 2 eggs. I put her into the breeding cabinet on Saturday morning and did not introduce the male till yesterday, she did have a partner when she was in the aviary so is there a chance that the eggs are fertile or probably not so should i remove them. To have 2 eggs she must have laid the first one on sunday so she was really ready to breed.
  20. You are probably right Dave, i will try to stick with the morning and afternoon checks and stay away from the breeding room for the rest of the day.
  21. Yes Dave, she is the one who came and chatted to you when you visited. She is so funny in the cabinet, when i go into the breeding room she will be in the nest box but as soon as she hears me talking she comes out of the box and comes to the front of the cage with her beak out of the wire wanting a kiss.
  22. It is so hard when you are working to get the things done you want to do, hope you can get the breeding room started soon.
  23. i am hoping i get some nice bubs from her, she is a violet skyblue spangle and i have paired her with a cobalt normal.
  24. I am going to be watching her closely, she was handraised by me and even though she lives in the aviary is still very friendly. It will be interesting to see if she will be a good breeder even though she was handraised. i have cornflour in my medicine box in my breeding room ready for any injuries.
  25. We have made some progress this afternoon she is allowing the male now to sit on the same perch as her.
