It gets to you doesn't it... and as easy as it is for me to say... try not to blame yourself, I know it's hard. I'm so thrilled he is getting better though
  2. I was doing some the other day until Photobucket decided not to play along... am waiting for my patience to return!

Firstly, how many pairs do you have in the aviary? It's important to have more nest boxes than pairs... many more. As to your breeding cages. First thing I'd do would be to get rid of the perches you have, and put in some shorter ones going from front to back, as opposed to accross your cage. I'd put one up high near the nest box perch, so they can get into it, and the other I would have down lower at the other end of the cage. This will encourage them to follow each other around a bit and hopefully make some change to the egg situation. Ummm... where are they located? Are they getting enough light and not being disturbed too much??? Just trying to think out loud...
  4. Hugs Kaz... always here for you xoxo

I'm glad he's perked up again. They are such small precious creatures, and as you said, can change very quickly. Another thing to remember, is that by the time we notice they aren't well, they may have been 'off colour' for some time... and this may just be the case with when they seem to be better too. I'm hoping however, this is the start of him on the improval! It's not a nice feeling at all... especially as you know they hide their symptoms for so long... I always feel guilty... like I missed something. Although that's not the case. ** Get better soon Charlie*** EDIT: Just read ypur above post... the extreme changes in temperature with the air conditioner, winds and spraying probably had something to do with in...

Poor Charlie!!! I'd cover three sides of his cage and put a lamp over him to provide warmth. I can't offer any other advice, sorry, but I hope he's back to his normal self soon.
  7. Sometimes you find that they stop feeding them for a reason, so it might not be well. If you had another Mum with chicks, you could try putting it in with them. You can also set up a brooder, which provides warmth etc... but I don't know much about them as I have never used them. I also know raising one from so young is tough work. Please let us know how you get on.
  8. Do you not have a foster to put it under. It would be very hard to raise a chick from that age. If not, I'd try suppliment feeding whilst returning it back to it's Mum in the hope that she will start looking after it.

I agree with Liv... doesn't sounds good. I'd keep him quiet and warm until you can get an urgent Avian vet appointment. Please keep us updated and good luck.

I agree with LIV... you will know when he's had enough, and to sleep with one leg tucked up is a good sign. I also agree about ringing around. I'd call every vet I could and expain the situation. I understand that things are different in Canada, but I hope someone can help you out.

Are the hens going into their breeding boxes? Are you seeing signs of the pairs flirting etc... I see you mention the nest boxes are fitted exturnally... excellent... are they up high and do you have perches so they can fly back and forth? A photo of your cages could help too.

I'm glad he is still going okay, but sorry he's not doing much better. I can't offer any advice on medication, but just want to send big hugs to you and Cosmo for a speedy recovery. xoxo

Would be better to take this to PM guys...
  17. Agree with others... Yes they can, but depends on the severity ot it as to if they can get by or not. I had one who had a stroke and had to be put down. As to getting better. I don't think they do. As in humans... my Mum had a stroke over 10 years ago, and one of her symptoms is she is weak on her left size. With regular physio and gym, she has become a little stronger, but will never have full strength back. I believe with budgies, they can addapt to their disabilities... like haveing one leg ect... but if s/he can't eat, it would be better to end it's suffering. Please let us know what happens.

Good idea to clean his bottom too... as mentioned... it's not good if he can't poo. Cleaning it with a cotton ball and warm water should help dislodge anything. I'm guessing you've already been to the vets by now. Hope he's feeling better. Please keep us updated.

TOTALLY agree!!! It's about the behaviour and this often relates back to the owner's/parents. You can make the same 'uneducated' assumtions about human children too... but just because some parents are bad parents and as a result their children are little 'you know what's' doesn't mean that all children are naughty, disrespectful, and do things they shouldn't. Many parents and pet owners are responsible... they bring their cats inside at night, train their dogs to behave and teach their children to respect others. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. It's also a pity, that the later can cause many people to form opinions of the species as a whole. I'd also like to remind everyone to keep this topic to what it was originally about... many members on here have cats and dogs, and a cat v's dog debate can not be won either way. We all have differnt opinions, so going back and forth is doing nothing but taking this topic further off the original post. So, to go back on topic... How are your birds today? Have they been returned back to the aviary or are you keeping them confined a little longer.

Dogs may be easy, but Cats... Have you ever tried keeping a Cat confined!?!? I do however think we should have laws everywhere where Cats must be kept indoors at night. Some suburbs near me do have this already... but should be worldwide! I'm glad your birds are doing better today Splat.

Whilst looking online for mediation and the sounds of nature CD's, I came accress this one with Budgies. Happy Budgies. You can listen to a few minutes of it before buying, and they are about $13 AUD to download and go for over an hour. (You can buy them on CD, but downloading them avoids postage and you can get them anywhere in the world!) Sounds like it would be great for those with lone/inside budgies... I'd assume they would LOVE it. If anyone does buy it, I'd love to hear about how your feathered family like it. Forgot to add... you can also get ringtones!!!

There's been a lot said in budgie breeding circles about the benefits of both sunshine and rain for a budgies health. Where we used to say open roofs were a danger due to wild bird droppings, now its better to give the birds sunshsine and rain. If the open section is suspended anything a wild bird will drop more than likely goes straight through Thanks...

Thinking of you all xoxox Regarding the pop out section of the avairy... what is the point behind it? Is there a certain reason for having it or is it just 'cause it looks good?!?
