Renovations?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm a little restricted with size... I have a shed on the left of the avairy, a fence behind (above this picture) and a big wattle tree to the right. It makes any additions quite hard. So is the consensis not to use treated pine? although the birds wont be housed in the new section? Thanks again :(Laughing out loud): maesie xxx

Renovations?
Thanks Lonebudgie... I don't really want to paint it if I can help it, prefer the natural look, but good point though. Thanks Scottie, my birds are pretty well looked after, but as to an owner with so much energy... My ideas are there all the time, but the actual energy to get off my butt and build it is a different story altogether (Laughing out loud).

Renovations?
This is my current Avairy set up. I have three sections. Budgies, Tiels, and the Safety Door. Currently for storage I have a metal chest outside of the avairy, and a selving unit inside the safety door section. It is very squashy I have a space of about 2 foot x 4 foot... I am slightly built, but it is still very tight. My plan is below. I want to extend the Safety door section, by doubling? it. I have a piece of laserlight behind the shed, which I'll use for the roof, so its size will be as large as I can go... I'll move the end wall out as far as it is needed, and I'll use timber to build the new side walls. I'll then put the shelving unit in the new section, possibly some more storage space, and a stool. Any more thoughts? I was also wanting to use treated pine to build this section. Birds will not be spending any amount of time in this section, unless by accident, or if they are in the hospital cage for injury. Will Treated pine be okay? as they won't be eating it? Thank you all for any advice given. maesie xxx

How Do I Introduce Other Foods Instead Of Seed.
With my new tiels, they have a bowl in which their daily treats (fruit, vegies, pasta, rice etc..) goes in. You could start with something they like, like thistle (just be carefull where you pick it from as it may have been sprayed) and then add other foods. My budgies LOVE corn. They eat it off the cob, but you could also try it off the cob. They also love grass which I pick from our lawn. You'll need to be patient and be willing to throw out a fair bit of food. Just keep putting it in there and eventually they will try it. You could even pretend to eat it as well and they may copy you. Good Luck maesie xxx

Budgies Dying
Hi and welcome to the forum. Everyone is awsome here! So sorry about your losses. Is sounds like my place. We've had several days over 40C but luckly enough I haven't lost anyone yet. I also have an avairy so I'll let you know what I've been doing. Dad and I have built a shade sail/cloth section above the avairy (which seems to have helped a little), they have extra water containers, wet towels on the outside, regular water spraying and I hosed the sides of the avairy, inside and out. Nothing really made too much difference. They still all sat/lay there with their wings out and panting like crazy. I felt very sorry for them, but there was nothing else I could do. I also only have fans inside, and felt that because my room was still 35C it wouldn't help them too much to bring them inside. It sounds like you are doing all you can though, and bringing them inside if you need to would be fine. I also tried the ice blocks in the water, but they melted before I left the avairy. I don't think there is much more that you can do. Sorry again for the loss of you budgies, good luck with the comming days and Happy New Year to you also.

Wing Clipping
I agree with Elly. I have never and prob never will clip any of my birds (they are all in the avairy so don't see the need). However, if I was to do it, I would watch someone else do it first. I'd be too scared to do it on my own. You could even get them to do one wing, and you could do the other (with their guidence). That's my thoughts anyway. Good luck!

Water Polo?
Very cute! What a good shot. I want him as a goal shooter on my soccer team!!!! Makes you wonder what they are thinking as they look at it doesn't it (Laughing out loud). My budgies used to pick up their balls from a tray, lean over the side with it in their beak, dance around moving their heads and ball and then wham... it goes flying across the avairy. Very funny, unless you're the budgie that gets in in the face

Question About Having 2 Budgies
Hey there... A play mate for Zeus sounds great. And yes, I would get another male to avoid 'accidents' (Laughing out loud). If you're able to get one now, I probably would, he'd be more accepting when he's younger and doesn't 'own' your place yet When you do though, you'll need to quarintine him/her for 30 days in a different cage and different room. This is to avoid transfer of diseases etc... You don't want Zeus to get sick. After that you could keep them in separate cages and let them play together, or if they get along, they could live in a bigger cage together, this would be up to you. Let us know if you have any more questions... maesie xxx

Creative Options
So, as Bert and Ernie try anything new in under 2 minutes (well ernie does, bert makes sure ernie doesn't keel over before he tries it :hap: ) I want to try and create some quick ways of serving food to them and maybe even get the budgies to try something other than corn!!! They have tried and eatern frozen/fresh vegies (corn, carrot and peas), banana, potato, zukini and hard boiled egg. I want to try them on pasta, brown rice, and lentils etc...My question is can I cook up some rice, pasta and lentils and freeze them in ice cube trays, so that when I want to serve them up, I just need to add them to the frozen and/or fresh vegies??? I know if I want to do egg, it will have to be prepared fresh... damn! I'm so lazy (Laughing out loud). What pasta should I buy? Is there a brown version (like rice) :hap: Um... that's all I can think of at the moment... any foodie advice is welcome!

Shade Sail Advice?
Yeah, that's what I was thinking... thanks. Just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I'm water spraying, and have 1/2 shade sail done and the rest will be finished today/tonite (when it's a little cooler for dad and I). :fear Other than that I'm leaving them alone.

Shade Sail Advice?
Should I bring my tiels inside? Today is now 40C and it's gonna be hot untill tues at least. I don't have enough room for the budgies but I could manage Bert and Ernie. They aren't tame though and would prob have to catch them with a net. I know this would stress them out heaps... catch 22 I guess. My room is about 30C, so 10C cooler with an occolating? fan. Any thoughts??? If I was going to try and catch them I'd wait till tonite ot tomoz morn when it's cooler, but yeah, unsure what would be less stressfull

New Member
(Laughing out loud)... mine don't like to sit still for photos either. :fear The wet towel is also a good idea. I know a few members also do it on smaller cages. Good luck and I hope the comming days don't get as hot as predicted. I also thought a cool change was due this arvo, but no change as yet grr :fear Your birds are cute as too

Mr Welcome Wagon - Comet
Maybe they know sky is different and it's like when we we were a school and the 'different' child gets picked on... Hope not though. Sounds like you'd have trouble finding a quiet place at your house (Laughing out loud)... Good Luck. I'm sure they'll love their new cage too.
