Canola/rapeseed Plant Toxic Or Safe?
As most of you know i love giving my birds the most natural diet possible. Being alomost spring, fresh green food is plentiful and I have a "veggie patch" that is full of large weeds and growing budgie mix seeds etc that I feed the birds during breeding. I am trying to research the different weeds to know which ones are safe and which ones are toxic as some have very good medicinal properties and can hold great micro nutrient and antioxidants for the birds that a normal seed diet cant give. I have some canola growing among my "crop" that has come from the seed mix i used in summer. The canola is coming into seed now and has lots of pods on it. I am just wondering if the plant its self if safe to feed the birds?? Can i pull it up and give it to them as is, or is only part of the plant safe or is it best to toss it away as it may be toxic??? Thanks

My New Breeding Room
LOL i have been cleaning the bird room and aviaries this weekend too. I like wire cages too, they are so easy to clean and there is no paining and less mite issues, but all the mess falls straight on the floor I know a breeder who wraps each cabinet in a garbage bag and just has the front open. I don't do this as i like letting the birds see eachother

Break It To Me Gently
Last night about 11pm Cirrus looked a little quiet (more than just sleeping) and when i picked him up he vomited. I have came to the realization that there is no way to see the early signs of sickness in feather dusters Thankfully he just had a little sour egg food after some water got into the dish, and he has been treated for salmonella, but you really can not see the early signs of sickness. You can not see if they are fluffed up. You can not see their stance on the perch, as they dont perch. They always have some messy feathers around the vent and the face... They dont sing and you cant see their eyes so you cant really tell if they are sleeping too much... Oh boy, scary stuff for me as i like to keep close eyes on all my birds health!

Mixed Frozen Vegies
I agree with GB. And Normal potato raw will make your birds very sick, even die. Always cook potato. Sweet potato is fine raw

Genetics Of Yellow Face (australian)
Yeah, I have the same experiences as you GB, I have never bred a YF from a white faced bird unless it has been DF YF. The fact that you can get DF YF tells me that its a dominant gene... not a recessive one

Genetics Of Yellow Face (australian)
Then why does the program say all chicks will be split??? Is there an error in the program??

Outdoor Bird Shed/ Aviary
I dont mind at all. I keep the main flock in external flights. I have 3 aviaries. One with the main flock, one with some cockatiels in it, and one with birds that are being kept away from the normal flock for different reasons. I also have a separate shed used for the quarantine of new birds. The birds in the large flight in the breeding room is for resting parents when they have finished their breeding season and for the fledged chicks that are gaining flight and social strength before they join the main flock outside. :emoticon112:

Cage Questions
You want your new budgie to be between 6-8 weeks old to be ideal for taming. 6 months old and it will be quite wild and a challenge to tame.

What Are These Three Birds
Sky Violet Opaline Spangle YF2 YF1 at the moment, but you will have to confirm after its first moult. Yes, this is a spangle dominant pied. Can you post a photo of this bird before its moult please.

Funny Poops
sounds like it could be all urine and no poop... but without pictures its really hard to know. Best bet would be to get it examined by your avian vet.
