Yes you will get YF grey budgies when you add a grey hen Make sure the hen is NOT YF otherwise they will be DF YF which will cause the face to be white again

I understand you there - i had to make the horrible decision to leave a sick bird in a pet shop as i didn't want to risk my flock by bringing in some yucky diseases. You did the right thing to leave them. Perhaps ringing the RSPCA and reporting the dodgie places will help - Thats what i did

Here you go neat! Every budgie breeder LOVES to show the floor of their aviary - NOT Here is my sand floor, there are pavers underneath the sand and i do a weekly clean (on tursdays) and a full sweep out and replace of sand every 4 weeks or so I love all the little Itty Bitty foot prints they leave in the sand

Lucerne chaff is great in the nest box as a medium in place of sawdust, as the hen and babies can chew it, as it is another form of green food, and it has a slight moisture content which may help with humidity and hatchability, it also helps with the odor from the nest boxes, and has no dust to go into the eyes of the baby chicks.

Detol can kill a budgie! If she is like the first picture then she is just in breeding condition and not in any need of treatments. As Kaz said she could be going out of condition so her cere is flaking. Personally I would not treat her for anything until you can get a photo up here or you can get her to a vet. The photo you post doesn't have to be really close - we will be able to tell from a little distance (lots of skilled eyes here ). Also if you use a macro setting (a tulip symbol on most cameras) you should be able to get a close clear photo

I wouldn't give it to them to eat but I do use cleaned sand pit sand on the bottom of my aviary - makes cleaning SO MUCH EASIER. I have not had any troubles with it. The beach can have lots of pollution so make sure you wash it very well.
