My First Cabinet Pairs.
This pair have had a rough trot The male from this pair died suddenly about 2 hours ago He seemed fine upon morning inspection. At my lunch time inspection I found him on his back completely unmarked and looking as if he were sleeping peacefully. Not even a hint of poopy vent or weight loss - he just literally "fell off the perch" Photos... I really liked him too, but on close inspection of his ring, i think he was a lot older than i realised. it read SC 9c 6060 SA So i put COD (cause of death) to be old age.

Why We Should Quarantine
Good aticle Neat There are so many out there that dont understand the reason for quarantine, which is normal - I didn't even think about quarantine before I joined BBC! Education is the key and well done for showing what can happen if quarantine is not completed. There is also: Psittacosis Psittacosis is a serious infection of birds and humans which is caused by the virus-like bacteria Chlamydia psittaci. Most birds have been exposed or may carry the disease but in this state it does not cause any problems and they are not contagious. However, Psittacosis may become highly contagious (it is spread by the air or by the droppings) from bird to bird and even from bird to man when stressful conditions prevail. MEGA (Megabateria) Megabacteria has been spoken of a lot in the last few years. It is a diseases that may well be present in most bird rooms but will remain undetected unless it is diagnosed by a Vet. Megabacteria is an organism that lives in the intestines of an infected bird. This may be present in the aviry but only some of the birds will have problems: SOME SIGNS: The bird in the first stages show no symptoms at all, but as the infection progresses the bird will look ill, fluffed up increase in appetite. It will also start to lose a lot of its body weight., over a 12 month period, Looks like it is eating But it isn't occasional vomiting, Poo may be enlarged and frothy with some seed or even blood in it. On examining the bird you will be able to feel the breast. Separating and treating the bird with the general antibiotics will have little success in killing off this bacteria. TREATMENT MEGABAC-S and it can be obtained from Vetafarm. MEGABAC-S comes in either capsules or in powder form and should be placed in the drinking water for 10 days As with all infections extra attention should be placed on hygiene within the aviary.

Frisky Teenage Behaviour
He is a handsome boy I would try covering him at 5pm through to 7am and see if that helps. Also when he is covered is it dark and quiet in his cage. he might be covered but still wide awake.

Is Casper Still A Boy?
I think you will be okay with those shelves as there is no cozy corner for them to tuck into. Most budgies like to feel quite enclosed and secure when nesting so to me the shelves do not look like potential nesting sites.

To Grit Or Not To Grit, That Is The Question! + 1
That would be bacteria required in the gut to break down the food. I would assume that the chicks would have a sterile gut until the parents give them the correct flora via their food - hence feeding of droppings

Such Garbage...
The worse thing is that spam emails with explicit links are sent to families every day and kids can easily access it

Nutrition & Record Keeping
If you want club rings with you personal initials and ID number etc then you need to be a member of a budgie club. If you just want bands for your own record keeping you can get them from bird suppliers and i have also seen them on ebay.

To My Surprise...
It dosen't hurt to leave the infertile eggs if you want.

Baby Budgies, Hatching From Egg!
The parents dont eat the shells, so it is advised to remove the shells to prevent them rapping around another egg.

To Grit Or Not To Grit, That Is The Question! + 1
I am different I don't use grit exactly. i give my birds soil from the root ball of fresh veggies and grasses that are pulled from my (chemical free) garden - This gives them natural minerals and grit and it is good for their immune system. Oh and i worm them regularly. My budgies go completely crazy for soil!

Should I Separate Them?
Taming is always harder with more than one budgie. My three inside birds are not as tame as they could be, but when they have each other as company, they loose interest in us humans. Many members have two birds in separate cages in separate rooms to maintain the tameness of their birds.

Whar Makes A Cock Become An Egg Smasher?
You can swap the eggs for fakes for a while - it will make him realise after a while they they will not break and he will give up.
-
My First Cabinet Pairs.
I think that might be it as i heard one of my birds squawking late last night (about 11pm). When i went out and checked i didnt notice an egg, but I didn't look on the cage floor either - so it was probably her as the egg surprised her.

Rarita And Mop
They are looking good so far. Good to hear you understand about the recommended age of breeding. I hope they continue being good parents for you. There looks to be at least 2-3 more fertile eggs. Do you have potential foster parents for the babies if your young pair start having troubles?

My First Cabinet Pairs.
That would be a funny sight

Frisky Teenage Behaviour
Budgies tend to get "issues" when moulting. Is he moulting by any chance? Also, how much sleep is he getting? Too many light hours can cause an increase in hormones.
