  1. If breeding cabintes is out of the question then I suggest that for every hen put in two breeding boxes.
  2. Some good advice here. Are your birds paired up. ie Are the cock birds feeding/pruning the hens? If they are first timers it may take some time to form this bond.
  3. Ikon replied to Derek's topic in Breeders Discussion
I generally dont breed until the 12 month mark. But I have hens that are 10 months and are in condition so I have put them in the cabinet over the weekend and they are already interested in the nest box.
  4. I have had hens whos cere has never been brown and yet they are great breeders. In fact I have on who is 3 years old that I purchased 6 months back who has a white cere and she is going great. (I will retire her after her next clutch)
  5. I agree with Liv. Nice birds.
  6. If you are a member of the Budgerigar Society f NSW (http://www.budgerigar.com.au/) then you can have your initilals(if not already taken) ring number and year.

    Very pretty birds.
  8. As Daz has said she will lay until she thinks she has a clutch about 5 eggs normally but I have had a hen lay 9.
  9. I would find a breeder that is winning in a regular basis and buy their culls.
  10. Pair him up ta a normal blue Hen and you will get some Albino Hens.
  11. I get a bit anxious as well. Especially if I have my bet cock over my best hen. (I have that at the moment and have 4 days until they hatch).
  12. Strange that you get birds that breed better than themselves consistently. I have one grey hen who is one of my worst and I have tried to sell previously. I paired her up and she is producing some really good birds (stock).
  13. You need to consider that Green is a dominant colour to blue. So unless the green budgie has a blue parent all you chicks will be green but will carry the blue recessive gene. Genetics is quite complicated and I have posted an link before on this topic that may help. http://www.geocities.com/heartland/bluffs/1958/index.html Hope this helps.
  14. Thanks again for sharing this with us. Its always the case when you lose birds they end up being your best. I am sure you get back to your winning ways when your birds recover.
  15. Never thought about the pavers. May need to investigate further.
  16. Point 2. I had a male that was not interested in any Hens until I left him a the breeding cage with a hen that chased him around for about 30 mins. After a day I noticed them bonding and have 3 chicks from him. Sadly he passed away. The chicks are all fine and I have fostered them to another pair who only had 1 chick of their own.
  17. It may be a case of they dont know what it is. If you are persistant then I believe they will try it.
  18. Tough one. I have just had my new aviary delivered. I will need to pour the slab before erecting it and am thinking of having a drain. The only problem I see with this is that perhaps mice can get in through this.
  19. Sorry to hear about your loss. Hopefully she comes back.

    Cute bird.
  21. Mine love it, but I plant it outside and then pull it out and give it too them roots and all.
  22. Not knowing the parentage of your two birds I will answer as if no hidden genes are present in your birds. You will get all Green babies The males will be carrying the "INO" gene and all will be split for Blue. Subsequent breeding of these Green male babies split for blue & carrying the ino gene paired to a blue hen can result in Albino offspring. The reason for this is that the yellow budgies are green based and the white budgies are blue based and green is dominant over blue.
  23. Around 5-6 is the average. I have had 9 is the most laid.
  24. The answer is no we cannot import I have enquired directly and below is the response. Even if we could import UK budgies here the quarantine is 6 weeks in UK and 6 weeks here in Aus. The birds are subject to all kinds of medication and are left in a weakend state. Some if not most would not breed. "Unfortunately, due to quarantine concerns, Australia does not permit the importation of budgies, including as pets. Whilst the Australian Government Department of Environment and Water (DEWR) has approved importation on environmental grounds, with several species listed on their List of Specimens Suitable for Live Import, quarantine concerns still need to be addressed to minimise the risk of disease spread. We are conducting an import risk analysis (IRA) of psittacine birds (parrots) that is assessing the quarantine risks and will hopefully lead to workable conditions so that people like you will be able to bring their pet birds to Australia. I am unable to give a definite timeframe for the conclusion of the IRA as we must also consider the impact of avian influenza worldwide. Information on the IRA will be placed on our website www.biosecurityaustralia.gov.au as it becomes available."
