Pair 3: Split cock to fallow hen have their first baby - its not a fallow, so its a split. Fingers crossed next one is a fallow or that at least these splits are an improvement on last years

The first fallow pair now have two chicks. I got home last night though and the cock is missing feathers from his head. I think the hen must have attacked him. I checked in later and she was out of the box, but he certainly wasnt acting bonded to her, in fact, he seemed intimidated. I tossed around what to do and have decided that I cant afford to lose him, so I am going to let her raise the chicks on her own for now and keep an eye on things and foster them if I need to. I have a sibling of hers still in the aviary who is a split, so I might fly him for a week and re-pair him to the sister next weekend, when I am putting down about 7 more pairs.
  3. All I can say is............ awwww - to the fruit AND to the grandbabies

My first fallow chick hatched today (Pair 1) I found it just newly hatched before I left for work and crossed my fingers all day that mum would feed it. It's looking strong and healthy, so she's doing her job. I tried to get a picture, but really wanted a decent one of its head to show the pink eyes (that look like it has no eyes at all). Anyway, it is a wriggle worm and I gave up on the picture for now, cause mum was looking a little anxious and getting a picture at this point, is less important than upsetting her with her first ever chick. The other pairs all have eggs and are due to be hatching over the next week or so, except for the last split to split pair and it took a while for that hen to settle into things, but she is now on two eggs also.
  10. If both males are showing interest, it wont matter which you remove, the one left behind will take up the courting and breeding process. He has a hen, a nest box, and they all sound like they are wanting to breed
  11. There would be some good blood in this stock, even though the breeding isnt catalogued, Barb would be able to give info on any of the birds. Kinda cool just buying birds on their own merit and not on a name I think actually. Barb is still keeping a flock of around 100 and cutting back here on varieties John did, so she can focus more on what she would like to do with the birds too. Between the two of them, their birds were a full time job and she just cant keep up with all the work, so I think she will be relieved to move some of their birds and yes, of course the money helps. Not interested in yf's, or cinnamons and I have enough clearbodies to work with for now to not buy more just for the sake of it. I would like a couple of blue series dom pieds and something violet, but Im not looking to be spending big money - now if there were fallows...... lol
  12. Will pass on your sentiment GB Im hoping for something violet and/or dom pied Squeak
  13. Thanks for organising the link for the catalogue Kaz
  14. "Following John’s passing Barb has realized she simply cannot carry the number of birds and varieties as in the past and has reduced numbers dramatically to allow her to remain a breeder and active helper within the fancy." The Auction will be at Vermont United Church, Cross Roads, Plympton, SA on the Saturday 9th of October, 2010. There will be 152 birds up for auction.
  15. Sorry to hear of your loss Nubbly, how sad and disappointing . Thank you for responding to my question
  16. Trying to tame flighty budgies in the past, I have had the cage close to me while I sit and watch tv and just leave my hand resting on a perch close to the bird, but not paying too much attention to the bird, just relaxing and watching tv until he/she gets used to your hand and trusts the hand isnt going to hurt him/her. Over time, I edge my hand closer and usually a baby will "test" the hand, biting or nibbling until after a while they see you as a toy and start climbing on the hand. Lots of patience, calm and quiet are needed to gain trust and it can be very frustrating, but the little steps forward are oh so rewarding until you have a tame pet who completely trusts you

Pair one have 3 fertile eggs, due in a week. Pair two have two eggs, pair three have four eggs, one fertile so far and the splits down the bottom are flirting and she is in and out of the box, but so far no eggs.
  18. I am having trouble with viewing pictures, so have missed out on seeing your lovely birds (some problem my end I believe), but even so, your thread is really informative. I particularly eat up all you have to say about Fallows, being a novice Fallow breeder. I have been told (and then heard it argued against) that putting split to split gives you your best birds, apart from the obvious wastage. I realise that everything not visual from a nest like this has to be test mated to see if it is a split, but am willing to give this a go, albeit this year, I only have one split to split pair down and so far, they are the only pair doing not much. What are your thoughts on this?
  19. Woohoo!! Very cool! I dont live with regret, I learn from mistakes and move on, and selling her to you wasnt a mistake, I still have her two sisters Looking forward to pics as they feather up
  20. Good luck with your breeding, it's very exciting to be just starting out with show types. I look forward to the pictures too

I bred one pair of fallows last year. A lovely fallow sky cock bird with a opaline violet split fallow eeny weeny hen. Their babies are ready to breed for me now and they are not quite as good as their dad, but already much better than their mum. I bought a fallow opaline green cock and his son who is a split at this year's auction. Today I am pairing all I have that is fallow and throwing a couple of normals in to further boost my size (hopefully). I dont expect a heap of visuals this year, but any I get are going to be like gold to me. I would like to thank in advance my friends Barbara Fisher and Sue Adams who are both breeders here in SA and are travelling a little way to talk to me and help me out today. It will be a great budgie girlie day and Im really looking forward to it. Will post pics when the pairings are done, but bear in mind, this is my first real season of fallows, so as far as show quality goes, there will be limits haha
