Update: Good news and bad news. The Bad: I came home from my fiance's today and found one of my fallow hens dead on the floor of the breeding cabinet. I have no idea why, she seemed perfectly healthy when I left yesterday. I guess she may have had something wrong with her, as two of her chicks didnt make it either and not due to her death. I have re paired her cock bird with a new hen - not fallow. The Good: I have re paired my fallow hen back with her original boy, after letting him fly in the aviary to get through his moult. He is looking much healthier and happier. I fostered their last two chicks, so they can have a fresh start together. I left her alone for a couple of days before I reintroduced him, and she was REALLY happy to see him. Head bobbing, beak tapping and hopping back and forward between perches. He seemed a little intimidated by her exuberance initially, but he is now happily chatting to her while she is back in the nest box, so fingers crossed, more eggs and babies to come from them (Pair one) The split to split pair I put down, who took a while to settle have hatched their first baby. I cant believe my luck - it's a fallow The other fallow chicks, all from pair one are doing well and starting to get some colour, although, I am still not sure what their colours are yet lol
  3. Pretty good overall I think. No big price tags, a number around the $100 mark and one hen got to $210 I think. I bought (and probably paid too much for) a sky violet hen, a cinnamon sky cock who I am very happy with and a grey green cock who is also a nice size. I stopped bidding on the hen, but my partner thought I really wanted her and he took over bidding to get her for me. She looked better at the auction than she does now she's home, but that happens sometimes I guess. Still, she is a colour I want to breed with, so I will use her this season and possibly put her in an auction next year
  4. I think cobalt and she can come live with me anytime!!
  5. How exciting!!
  6. These are just my ideas from what I get from the pictures. I would put the Albino hen from Pr 2 with the grey tcb from Pr 4. Experts may correct me, but I thought the idea of putting ino to tcb was to bring clear the colour, so I would be putting white with grey, not yellow. I would put the Lut hen from Pr 5 with cock A. I just like him better for her (how's that for expert!) lol I would put the TCB violet hen from Pr 6 with the sky cock from Pr 7. In these pictures, he looks longer and bigger than the one you have her paired with, so would add to or hold her size. I think the other cock will bring her down. I would then put the Lut hen from Pr 4 with cock B. This is just what jumped out at me and I am happy to be criticised with someone who has more technical and more experienced views, but I'm not necessarily happy to be questioned about my choices, because most of it comes from gut feeling with me lol
  7. It's a gorgeous house! I wish you luck and happiness whatever the outcome x
  8. Deserved winner. Too cute photo heh. Congratulations
  9. No ideas from me. Just wanted to say sorry, poor little mite

Me too. Most of them are looking to be blue series which is my preference, so I'm happy with that. I fostered the two youngest fallow chicks out today, so "single mum" has no babies to look after now. I am letting her just have a couple of days on her own, and I will put the fallow cock back in there Friday morning, when I am home to watch and see how they go. Hopefully, they will happily bond again and give my another round of lovely fallow babies

Second pair: Sky blue cock I bred last year with Fallow Sky hen, sister to the one above. Yay they have their first chick! He is my champion novice cock so I was REALLY hoping they would give me something, as I am hoping to have nice sized splits from them. Pair three have two splits and one fallow chick. Pair four are still not due yet.

Nice fallows Rach!! Love your cock from pair #4. Being a fallow nut, I will be following your progress with anticipation and I wish you all the luck in the world! I have a split to split pairing too, but they are both, unfortunately quite small birds. I intend on hand taming any babies that are not visual fallows and selling them as pets, and only keeping the visuals from that pairing. From my split fallow cock to my fallow hen, the first two babies are splits, but their third is fallow. I am so excited about my first "real" season of breeding fallows and the results of what compares to what (split to split etc) and I am really looking forward to your results too. Best of luck with it all!

I know what you mean, I just had to chase my quaker off my keyboard to type and to browse I have to tuck it away so she's not walking all over it. I have babies I have handled a lot in nests, that still come and sit on me as adults in the aviary. I wouldnt call them exactly tame, but I can have "thumb fights" with them and bring them over to my face to make silly noises at them and they dont mind. One has just finished breeding and he became flighty in the breeding cage, but another is in breeding and he still hops on my hand with some gentle encouragement

Awesome effort guys. These are hilarious
  17. Done this one before. I dont open eggs now, I wait til well past due and then just toss them. Put babies into the nursery aviary and thought they were all settled as I went to leave and of course, babies being babies, one took off straight out the door as I was leaving. I ALWAYS leave the box in the aviary now and let the babies let themselves out and leave them for a good half hour or more before I attempt to retrieve the box.

Oh wow how exciting!! We have given up on our Princess pair, they really seemed to be doing nothing. Our Barrabands bred last year though and the hen has gone to nest again just recently. The Kings arent doing much, still looking and not doing, but I cant give up the Kings lol

Smudges starred in some of my very first posts I believe I can guess she was four or so years old and being pet type, she should have handled breeding again physically, specially as she had last year off, but who knows really. I know you did all you could and she couldnt have had a better home

If they NEED fattening up, sunflower or bandicoot oats can be good. But sunflower has a lot of fat and bandicoot oats is high energy so you need to be careful. I have fat birds in big aviaries just from feeding them normal feed and veggies. I want to know how to slim them down! Not really, but some of my birds are a bit fat and they have plenty of flying space and normal feed. Sorry to hear of your loss Squeak It always sucks.

I dont know why I cant get my camera to do what I want it to do, maybe it's time for a "camera for dummies" so my pics are not very good unfortunately, but here they are all the same. I have done some moving around of babies so size matches and so that the fallow hen from pair one is only raising the two on her own. As soon as those two are old enough for rings, I will be resting her for a few days and carefully reintroducing her cock back to her. He is looking much better already and I am going to put him back in for a second round, where he can actually help raise his chicks. Youngest baby with split foster baby. The foster is in there to even sizes out as he was a bit smaller than his siblings. The 2nd oldest fallow is in his nest with the other split fallow baby. Next oldest baby fostered with split (the splits are from pair 3). These two wouldnt stay still for photos! (well thats my excuse for the shocking quality - sorry) And the oldest two, also fostered out. Seems that hen may be down plucking, so I will keep an eye on her, but other than that, she is stuffing all the babies full and is very attentive. I havent bred with her before. Side note - she is a grey green dom pied spangle I bought at auction, hoping to get dom pieds. She laid four eggs, all looked fertile but only one hatched. What are the chances it could be dom pied (I'm thinking pretty slim) but it is! Now Im just hoping its blue series lol Anyway, the oldest fallow babies. Pair two had a baby pipping in its egg yesterday, but today I found it dead I have given them the youngest split baby to rear and they still have two eggs that could possibly be viable. Even if I get nothing from them this round, I know there is fertility, so I will let them go a second round. Pair three have had three split babies, no fallows. Pair four are still not due to hatch but look to have three fertile eggs.
