2008 Breeding
I have chicks like that also that get the "dark spots" in their crops, i was a tad concerned also and checked their food. I husked every variety of seed and found that a small pearl coloured one with a slight sheen to it like millet but more ovular shaped had a darkbrown / black seed inside and thats all they were.

Other Birds
Hi guys after seeing shells post on her "other birds" i too thought it would be cool to share some pics of the rest of my avian family other than the budgies... I dont have pics of all of them, but most i hope you enjoy... - This is Leroy. He's around 7 1/2 years old now and we've had him for close to 2 years. He sits out back on his cage all day, gets down eats the grass hops back into his cage has his seed and water and basically lives the life of luxury being a freerange cockatoo. he talks a little bit but isn't that great, his old owner named him and taught him how to say his name so although we suspect "leroy" to be a "leroyette" the names unfortunatly stuck with him. He's a very sexist bird and prefer male company. If he's on the round i'm nowhere to be found, as i value my toes My partner bob is lucky enough to have formed a bond with him and can do anything with him (cuddle him, pick him up by his beak, play eskimo kisses, anything) and although he's extremly loud and can be annoying i think he was well worth the small fortune we payed for him. - This is Raspberry i'm unsure on any details of this bird as he was given to me for free by someone who didnt want him. He also talk and blows raspberries (hence the name). He loves his head scratches but doesnt like to come out of his cage, so he stays in there at all times which according to him, suits him well. His favourite hobbies include ripping up the towel that hangs on his cage and putting it,along with seeds in his water bowl... i know odd hey? - This is Kiki and Lala (Kiki on the left Lala on the right) Lala was my 18th birthday present from my partner this November just gone. She was only 6 weeks old when we got her and has since grown up into a beautiful girl. Kiki was my partners 21st present in April 2006. They were both hand raised and are both extremly tame. Kiki wolf whistles, say hello, his name and laughs like a dirty old man Lala is yet to pick up speaking, but has half of the wolf whistle down pack. Their favourite foods are Bottlebrush blossoms and honey. - This is Casper. He was my selection of the 13 weero's we hand raised to keep. Even though he's now close to ten weeks old the little sook wont wean of hand rearing mixture, but it works well as it's keeping him well without dropping him in the deep end without it. - This is Bubbles. He or she is my partners pick of the 13 weeros to keep. He was the youngest bird we got and was only a week or so old when we started hand raising him. He's now around 7 weeks and i would say probably the most tame of the babies. - This is my flock of 5 Lovebirds. R2 (the dark green peachfaced) was hand reared with his brother who since passed away 4 years ago. Minty( the light green creamy peach faced) was purchased as a friend to accompany R2 everyday when his brother passed. Touki (the green fischers) was then bought as a female to break up the bond of r2 and minty as they had turned gay. The last two unnamed birds i beleive are called Lutino peachfaces, were bought as more females to add to the mix as touki apparently "didnt do it" for either R2 or Minty. Since then Minty has bonded to one of them. They all live in an aviary of their own with 3 nestboxes. Touki the only suspected female stays to herself in one, Minty and a lutino share one together and the other two have the last one. All seems to work well and i find them to be very adorable birds to watch. - This is a picture of a few of the Weeros in the aviary taking a break. The top right bird is the only named one. He's my tame boy called Charlie. I've owned him for atleast 5 years now and when this aviary was built last summer we decided to put him in there. He seems to enjoy it very much in there and although he's become more distant he will still sit on my shoulder, eat my jewellery and take the sunflower seeds and vegies offered to him. There's another few weeros in the aviary including 2 disables but they had decided they didnt want a picture and scattered to variious perches to avoid the photo. Well that's it for the birdy tour, i hope you like the pics and info

Violet Has Turned Aggressive
My hand raised lutino honey has also started to get into this stage i've experienced every hand raised bird do it. I call it the angry "fit" stage it's almost like temper tantrums. although mine never officially "bite" me they go into the angry hissy fits like a toddler and squabble at my fingers and so on. In my personal expeirence i've found it comes as soon as they learn to fly properly... so once they can soar away from you when they come back they start their little fights. I too do what you did with all my last birds and got fed and put them in the aviary. Unfortunatly being in the aviary with untame birds will turn her even less tame in only a matter of days. If you genuinly want to keep her as a pet and wont be placing her in the aviary until fully grown i'd put in her in a seperate cage all of her own and if worst comes to worst with the training, clip her wings. But like discussed before, wing clipping is all a matter of opinion. best of luck with your little girl libby

What I Do:
As far as we know we haven't got Africanised bees here…yet…got just about everything else…I have heard about your die off disease, there is talk that we have it too…nobody seems to know what is causing it…but maybe environmental damage as bees are very sensitive. But with climate change on it's way & a lot worse than they tell us, I think...it probably is all academic...we all will be in trouble. I say pools are the problem!!! i swear, i pull hundreds of bees out a day, maybe that's where their population is going into my creepy crawley!!

Some Of My Budgies
Gorgeous!!! so many spangles but each one absoloutly gorgeous!!!! favourite mutation by any chance? :hap:
-
Chester
You've got to be careful with that though... i have a tame weero who loves his mirror but now lives in the aviary with the other birds.. as soon as he sees a mirror he flies for it and can get quite agressive if it's not given to him...

What I Do:
Yes severe allergies suck!!! i'm quite allergic but it's not a death sentence for me, however my cousin has to carry an "epi pen" around at all time incase of emergency ( it's a small pen like thing with a needle inside filled with adrenalin)which he must stab himself with and call an ambo :S now that'd be scary!!!
-
What I Do:
Wow Norm that looks awesome!!!! If only i weren't allergic to bees doesn't it suck getting stung so much?... i'm afraid of one sting let alone thousands... around how much honey would come out of each of those frames?

Update On My Birds
Very gorgeous birds!!! Love your dominant pied adult!!!

Pied Chicks
When pied chicks are in the nest before the stage where you can see pins or clear skin markings do they appear to come out a much paler pink/whitish colour compared to other normal birds? I've just had a dominant pied hen hatch 2 chicks and both appear to be quite whitish so other than waiting to watch them change is it a good indicator of pieds ? mums a cinnwing dominant pied green and dads a normal green.

Compatible Birds
Okie doke... first up definate NO to love birds :budgiedance: i put a budgie into a cage with my love bird when i was 11 for a whole... 3 seconds and my poor boy lost a toe... since then i keep them as far apart as possible. Quails and weero's are the only birds i'd attempt to try with them and like others have said it doesnt always work for all of them... i'm just lucky i guess. No elly, no build up of bacteria that has killed birds. I havent lost a bird in the aviary for months aside a hen who was old and the rabbits have lived in there for the last 6 months. Rabbits tend to poop in one spot only. They're actually rather clean animals, eat absoloutly everything including seed husks and enjoy their stay in freedom. My younger rabbit pancakes even decided to dig himself a 3m warren out of the aviary which has since been bricked up and covered again. I have 8 quails, 2 rabbits and 3 (2 weero 1 budgie) disabled birds who all sleep on the ground together and huddle up for warmth.

Chester
perhaps try clipping his wings? for his sake (no broken neck) and yours...(makes him easier to handle) it doesnt hurt him and although i have a tame baby atm without clipped wings your boy chester sounds a bit older than easily tamable age, so it may be easier for you :budgiedance: where possible once his wings are clipped try tunneling with him on your chest and step ups... eventually he'll settle down and get slightly used to it and it lowers the amount of times you have to forcefully catch him if he's learnt to step up. He'll still jump off alot but it decreases with time and helps alot... this is just my personal opinion, not everyone is for clipped wings... but thing to remember is they grow back after a moult or two... but if you're aiming to acheive tameness of a bird this age i'd go for it best of luck with him

Fallow Success!
Yeah, i cheated though got them from a excellent specialised fallow show breeder :oliveb: i'd have got pet types if i could but he's the only person around with fallows at all so had to get what i was given :grbud:

Fallow Success!
I'm over the moon!!! a week and a bit ago we bought 5 fallow birds of a nearby show breeder... we paired them up within themselves and left them in the cabinets to breed. I've noticed that the hens always seem to be in their boxes so i was not suprised today when i went out there to find my gorgeous hen in the top box is eggnant!!!! she left a rather large poo and then disappeared back into the box, so we're expecting eggs soon!! YAY!!!! The hen below her in the other cabinet is also spending alot of time in her box so we're hoping for some good results from that pair soon also!! I'm so happy i'm managing to breed them... was worried they were a bit fo a waste of money for birds we couldnt breed :rip:

NickNack
welcome, to you and your feathery friends You'll enjoy it here... plenty of constant supply of information! with a friendly atmosphere! look forward to pics of your little rescue birds and i'm sure that the fact you second guess yourself as to whether or not the birds are better off proves you care and they are!

Baby Won't Wean! 15 Weeks!
Have you tried sprinkling millet on the floor of his cage and removing the perches? i find this the easiest way to get them to begin the weaning onto seed process as because there's nowhere else for them to sit they get bored on the floor and start to pick... i often dont find my birds to drink water either so i provide fresh lettuce on the cage floor with the millet seeds which they pick at also... with the birds being hand tamed i find placing a single millet seed in their mouth also helpful in teaching them as they start to gain confidence and play around with it and chew it slowly learning to husk it.... best of luck with this one he sounds like a hard shell to crack!
-
My Fuzzy Lot
absoloutly stunning! i LOVE both your dominant pied, especially the cinnamon cock!!!

Our Honey Now All Grown Up!

Vet Checkups?
If the birds showing signs of disease then yes... like lonebudgie said if not, it's really gonna end up costing you more than it's worth... a budgie shouldn't be purchased if showing signs of disease and like he also said the best cure, is prevention... the bird may be a carrier of a disease, but there's not a heck of alot a vet can do about it so keep your bird healthy, worm it, spray it for mites and lice, feed it well and there's no real need to take it to a vet unless sometime down the track it becomes sick.
