  1. Welcome Deb I agree with the above post, that topic by KAZ is a very good one, just because a cage may look pretty to us, it might be a nightmare for a budgie I bought my first budgie just over 6 months ago, and l noticed she was getting lonely, as l'm not home between 7:30 and 5:30 everyday so l bought her a little friend. Remember, if you would like a tame budgie, please don't give it any mirrors or other shiny toys (like bells for example) as they get protective and prefer to talk to their "friend" more than you. And if you have any questions, there are a lot of people on this forum who are willing to help I've asked for help on several occasions and they have always been helpful.
  2. Gilly looks like my Fizzy They are very cute
  3. Wow :| I have that toy Thanks so much and good on you for saving your budgie. Will not use it again.
  4. I only did it today because l've previously given them whole pieces of veggies and fruit. I wasn't sure how they would take the mix of grated/cut up pieces all together. Pretty much to get them attracted to it, but thanks, l won't put them in there anymore
  5. Thats a great idea Thanks Pheobe! They have put a lot on the floor of the cage, and Sherbet is hoarding it Fizzy is trying to get to the mix at any chance he can. Poor little munchkin Is it okay to put some seed in it? I just thought they might like it more with some of the sweet honey stick seed.
  6. Would l be able to make this in bulk and refrigerate? It would just be a pain if l have to take another 10-15 mins of my morning before work to make this mix, l already spend about 10-15 mins on them already Changing their water every morning and topping up their seed containers.
  7. Yes, thats right, l have a budgie veggie mix Today l went back to Kellyville Pet store and l bought a smallish stainless steel bowl, which can be attached to the side of the cage. I bought some snow peas on the way home. My mix includes snow peas that are torn into small pieces, grated carrot (even though they didn't eat any yesterday at all, l decided to try it in the mix), corn kernals, pieces of apple and cut up brocolli trees (the small ones). I also had a huge bell seed that l took off them a while ago because they were only eating that and none of their normal seed, so l broke that up a little and sprinkled it over the mix. They are eating it Fighting over it a little actually, but Fizzy is slowly realising that Sherbet was there first so she gets first dibs. I was really excited and proud of myself with my little mix that l made I hope they enjoy it - although they are throwing bits and pieces out sometimes
  8. I also read in a childs budgie book - it was aimed at children who are going to own a budgie for the first time - to not give them a lot of eye contact. I'm not sure if this is true, confirmation? would be advised. It basically said, try not to stare at them, it makes them uncomfortable at first. Walk around the cage, or somewhere they can see you, doing general things around the house, like the laundry, housework (dusting) or something like that, but make minimal eye contact. EDIT: Looks like your making some progress just before l posted this post :hap: Congratulations - remember, don't give up, thats what l did now my budgies are still scared of me because l didn't stick with it.
  9. Loving the play-by-play commentary! Adorable pics - l love the one where she is slipping
  10. Mine like apples, corn on the cob and broccoli. I am still yet to try them with carrot. They didn't like celery at all, just looked at it and walked away. I will have to try snow peas too

Okay, this is more of a "who spoilts their birds rotten the most" type of threads.. I was curious as to how many toys (roughly) that you have to spoilt your birds. I have a plastic crate/storage container thats full past the brim! I have to have no lid on, and balance the toys on top! I must buy a bigger one. I absolutely love buying new toys - but only the interesting ones, the ones that are so unique and different
  12. Kaz - l'm slowly trying to get them to try new foods, once l find out what they like, l will mix it up for them and give them a bit of everything they like I tried corn today, Fizzy seems to like it more than Sherbet, but Sherbet being the bossy thing she is, doesn't want him to eat it because she knows he's enjoying it. She is however taking little bites, then moving away. So there is something else that they like
  13. Just wondering if there can be too much broccoli given in one day? I have recently found out (today actually) that my two budgies LOVE broccoli!! I gave them one tree (one of the small trees) this morning and it was completely gone when l got home this afternoon - the only evidence left was little tiny pieces (only a few!) on the floor of the cage and a stalk on the ground nearby. Now, when l got home, l was really excited, so l put another small tree in. Now, Sherbet being the bossy thing she is, took charge and claimed it as her own, not letting fizzy have any. I felt sorry for the poor little thing, so l put another tree in on the other side of the cage so he could get some too. My mum questioned whether this was too much in one day?
  14. How cute! I love the picture with the three birds on the perch
  15. So, its kind of a relaxed state?
  16. No idea, it is very strange! I would have thought it would be extremely uncomfortable. Their poor feet and legs must be so sore in the morning from cramps
  17. I only found out for the first time today, that my little Fizzy has a weird sleeping habit. I don't tend to go outside and see them after they start to settle down, l let them be to sleep. My dad however gets up early in the mornings and he said that fizzy sleeps on the side of his cage, holding on with his feet. I didn't believe him at first but because we had dinner under the awning tonight, l saw him! He holds on to the side of the cage and sleeps. Sherbet sleeps on the swing, and he holds on right next to her :)
  18. Poor munchkin I check my birds everyday, and l was (and still do) get worried about a little flakeyness on their beak, which does go away after a day or two, or if their feathers are ruffled, so l could only imagine what you and your budgie is going through.
  19. Ah okay, thanks deb Sorry to hear about your budgie and the cyst
  20. I will be sure to try that I only ask because l'm going to the supermarket later to buy somethings for work, and l would like to get them some nice good food to eat
  21. Ha ha, l would have to say that would look cute! The only thing is, l've only ever feed my two budgies apple. I tried some pear but because its not as sweet as apple they didn't really want it. I have tried celery and the dried fruit mix in a container you can buy "Tootie fruitie" or something, but they don't want them.
  22. Oh okay cool :)I noticed in this pet store they had made like a mix of all these different types of veggies - they were very very small pieces, like they were grated or something. Thanks for the advice deb :yellowhead: But is it alright if l give it to them, say once a month? Or is not at all good?
  23. Thanks Liv - just wondering - do you make a mix of the food you listed and put them in a little food bowl or something similar?
  24. Hey everyone, I took a trip to a pet store today, one thats on over 1/2 acres (a good section for birds!) and l noticed in the cages that they had a steel bowl with lots of vegetables. Now, l know that theres a post of what not to feed your budgies, but l was wondering, are there a mix of vegetables that you have used and your bugdies love? I know, l know, l should have asked while l was there, but l was there while the store was closing, and all staff members were busy. I saw that they had bits of corn, carrot and other green things, kind of mashed up, in this steel bowl. I'm pretty much asking what exactly l should buy to make a mix of :yellowhead: And do you make a big batch and put it in the fridge/freezer? Also - sorry l know so many questions, but are sunflower seeds okay for budgies? Only because l bought this awesome perch which is a dried out cactus one thats hollow with holes in it, and the sales rep said sunflower seeds are great to put inside it. I'm only questioning him because he was only about 17, so l'm not too sure - so are they alright? Thanks for your help
  25. I have to agree here. Although l don't breed budgies and have no intention of doing it, my reason is as follows. Being a strong cat-lover, l don't understand why people breed cats and dogs (and other animals too). Most people l know just couldn't be bothered de-sexing their animal, and when they are about to have kittens or pups, they just get so happy about the amount of money they are going to make, they don't care where the animals go, just as long as they get money for them. Do they then bother to get their animal de-sexed? Nope, and the amount of strain it puts on the animal... I have 3 cats, two of which are pedigree, and one whom l found on a construction site l was working on. She was a kitten at the time, obviously not too old, without a collar or microchip, as skinny as anything, and l took her in, but if l were to find out who either dumped her, or who had her out of pure greed for the money, l would give them a huge punch in the nose. All l'm saying is that there are so many unwanted animals out there, looking for a home. By people breeding animals, these pets who are at welfare leagues or the rspca aren't being bought, instead the ones who were bred for money are. Thats why when l eventually move out of home with my boyfriend, we will be buying all our pets from the animal welfare league. We're going to do the right thing and buy a dog and maybe some cats who were dumped because people didn't want them, and give them a home. However - breeding animals (like birds) to keep and extend your family, l have no problem with, because your willing to live with them and care for them. I couldn't handle someone having one of my animals offspring, l wouldn't know if they were taking care of them or not
