Thanks Kaz, Yes Greg is the same cut cut straight if his life depends on it, shhhh don't tell him that . My jig saw packed it in yesterday so now I can't cut anything I have to depend on Greg to do it now, sucks. Because everytime I ask he grumps at me . I stiil want to fix up the shelving above the nappy cage it I have 3 pieces of melamine at 45cm by 95cm left to use.

I used this corner dowel stuff to fill any gaps so the seed stays on the shelf and not behind. All finished except I have to put my little work station shilf on tomorrow. Oh yeah I have done 3 cages, changing the fronts just 1 to go. Going to have 4 breeding cages and 2 just to hold hens etc are the come after of the breeding box for a rest before going into the aviary. The work station will be this end of the shelving. Meaning from the photo ( nearest to the camera) Already it is great love it

Taboo my set is very ordinary and basic, I dream of having something Kaz, Daz and Clearwing. It will never happen so I have to be greatful for what I have But one thing I am doing is making the best of the space I have I am always trying to make it more friendly useable and this shelf system is part of that. Like I don't have to get down on my hands and knees now and vaccum the seed underneath and at the back of the cages on the floor, ( it was a very hard job and and I always thought it sucked)

Thanks Macka, Gb and Kaz, I have been going to do this for a while because I was sick of the cages sitting on tables and on top of each other and seed going behind and everywhere, but to be honest I got the idea of the cupboard from Clearwings breeding room. Brad one of our club members is a builder and he has lined out CW breedroom and made shelving with a cupboard like this. I thought brillent so I went home and copied it, smart little vegemite aint I  But I made a huge improvement on it because CW doesn't have sides to it and so seed still goes down the sides. I brainstormed and came up with the idea of fixing the sides with those little pieces of dowel. BUT to make it sturdy the shelves our fixed to the wall with brackets. IT doesn't give at all now study as. It was funny when I bought the wood from bunnings in Shepp I asked for 190cm cuts but then cut in half because I needed it to fit in my car. I got 2 pieces like this. Well that was a waste of money because it was too hard to work with it like that. After folding down my sits etc because I have a Hyundai I realised the front passanger sit alost lies flat so then I was right off I went shopping again and bought 3 pieces at 190cm and yep fitted in my car like a dream could of got another foot in there too. Greta little car very versitil. Well nearly finish will post more pics later.
  7. Not really big enough, the rectangle one sounds much better

okay here are some pics of my shelving. This is inside the bottom cupboard part and how it is attched to the wall. I have made a lid so I can store things there that I don't use much. Plus i can check to see what gets under there time to time. This is the lid closed . Getting the sides on for the top shelf All most with the top shelf on.
  9. I have plenty to confess
  10. See we all make mistakes or some of us , especially in this busy world when you are ment to be everywhere at one time.
  11. I use applecider vinagar with the mother in it.

Thanks Shannon I was going to use the hooks but I am making the shelving with sides so the seed just goes to the front. Kaz if you read this can you post a picture of nest box on the wire front that is upside down.
  13. okay here's one of my stuff ups. As I get old I also forget things or get a bit muddled up lol. Once or even twice while checking feed and topping up but this is when I used bowls in the breeding cages. Well I feed all birds but there was an empty cage above one breeding box and I put the bowl in the empty breeding box so that meant a pair with 4 babies had no food all night and when I checked in the morning I still didn't notice what I did but I couldn't work out why both parents were out of the nest. I thought strange and off I went on my merry way, had to go out that day so I went to check on them around 4 oclock and top up bowls and oh my god those poor birds had no food at all except a few grains on the floor for 24 hours. But I was lucky both parents were fine and the raised the babies healthy and happy and it didn't stunt their growth. BUT I JUST FELT TERRIABLE for ages never made that mistake again but I have put a drinker a couple of weeks ago on a empty cage and left a hen with water over night but they can live with no water for a while but NOT seed.

Hi all. I have been busy trying to make my breed room user friendly as I am always looking to improve things on the space I have. To start with I hate my space but then at the same time I need to be great for what I have and I am. My breed room is about 26 feet long I think and only 5foot wide that's the bit I hate (not wide enough.) Anyway the first part of the breed room is about 9ft I think by the 5 ft and I have 16 cages. then you walk into my baby aviary 6ft by 5ft which leads into the second breed room. There is a entrance to this room seperate also, so if I have visitors I take them that way. The second breed room is 11ft by the 5ft. So far I have my large nappy cage just inside the door and then 2 more large breeding cages made out of a old book case and right along above these cages I have a shelf for show cage traing etc. I have seed bins under this shelf. .At the far end of this room is my trophy cabinet which I am very proud. On the right hand side where the window is I have 2 rows of six wire cages and a seed bin. Well what I have been working on is the shelving to keep the wire cages up. Till now all I have used is too old tables with some wood on top and all the seed would go everywhere. So I have decided to build new shelving use white board. First I had to reinforce the back wall to hold the shelving. The shelving is 190cm long 45cm wide. Will take photos tomorrow. But I am really happy with what I have done completley on my own with totally no help from Greg aggrrrr. I have decided to cut holes in my wire cages to hang nest box off something that I have been putting off for 2 years. Couldn't bring myself to do it but the time has come
  15. That is a good idea, it will make you feel better knowing the the birds are all good. I know with some of my birds they empty their jars in 5 minutes, waisting it it I mean and if you use those wire cages they can't get to the seed. I have the time and I check my birds morning and night but then I am always out there because I am budging all the time as Greg puts it Greg reckons I should put my bed out there too But only you can work out what you can do.
  16. I use steel feeders attached to the wall in each aviary and a large plastic or roast pan on the floor on a small stand in each aviary too. I use small round drinkers that you attach a soft drink bottle of any size to it . Take pics tomorrow if you want.
  17. Sorry you lost a pair of birds. I am with Kaz , the mason jar feeders are great and like Kaz said they last a week. I have made mistakes quite a few times and have learnt from them too... So I will not judge . Crop needle well just give it a ago next time. I am always scared when I do it as once I pearced the crop and lost a baby and the really put me off but when the time came for me to save a bird next time I had to do it no choice.Good luck with you babies :bump: it did not work for you....you lost 2 birds. nearly every day is not good enough...it should be EVERY day. try to install some lights so you can check birds any time. quick glance is not good enough....you should check feeders, blow away husks and top up if necessary and you should change water every second day or every day in hot weather. it is also about checking the birds for signs of illness...especially breeding pairs and chicks have to be checked twice a day. i am not picking on you, i am trying to give advice.Sorry I have to say this Lealotta but a bit harsh when all she wanted was some advice on the crop needle.
  18. Nice babies Kaz, glad your greywings are coming along nicely :bump:
  19. Here is another question GB :bump: , do you know what the sheppard/flanagan birds go for and did you have a look at them and if so were they nice or ordinary?
  20. Yes GB lol No he sits fine he was just nervous. He belongs to Clearwing, Geoff he bred him. Nice isn't he. A big bird baby. He parents are one my DF spangle hen (full sister to my white one and Geoffs Sheppard cock. This cock of Geoff's is a beauty throws good babies no matter who the hen is, prepotent I guess you call it, but then my hen is nice too.
  21. isn't anyone going to comment , someone!!!!! except you GB, not yet

I totaly agree with you Dave on that. When I first started out I went to 3 different places but then settled on one breeder mainly and out crosses from the other two breeders. Now I believe I have a stud going as all my birds are now related and they all have the same look. Well almost anyway. You are doing great.
  23. splat replied to Dave_McMinn's topic in New to BBC
I actually agree with Macka here, sorry, but I am guilty of buying or trying to buy a certain breeders birds and i have been put in my place by more experience breeders saying the same as Macka just said. Just because you buy a bird from a certain breeder doesn't mean they are related unless you ask or get a pedigree on their background. Most breeders top breeders bring in birds and of course have different lines going so unless you are sure there is no garentee they have the same. But as Macka said once you breed from them for a few years then they are you bloodline based on what you bought. After all good luck Dave nice hens. And yes you are the breeder and only you know your plans.
