  1. Seems that the traveller has been leading me astray. I checked on the birds this morning, she she was out, hopping around. When she saw me, she flew up to the perch and hopped back in the nest box. Sneaky. Mums are going to be removed over the next few days to a seperate cage to give them the chance to build up their strength before they return to the aviary, much like what happened with Sebby. New pics to come soon, especially of Angel and Hugo's brood ( as they were missed last time) and of course the Traveller, fledged.
  2. I would love to take a lot of credit, but the birds do all the hard work. They are very cute though. I am still sad for those that did not make it. Milly and Humphrey's lost 4 and the the youngest of Tralia and Nibbler. Depite the happiness of the survivors, those sad thoughts remain.
  3. Most welcome deb. The little ones of Tralia/Nibbler and Hugo/Angel are larger than the pairing of Sebby and Cheese. It is like has been said on here many times. A lot of recessive pieds are smaller. I would love to see a photo of a larger recessive pied - any showtypes? Nibbler and Hugo are not show size birds, but they are show types, so the babies are getting the size from them. Funny as I said I would not put any in breeding boxes again until November/December, but already I am planning. Damn it, be strong!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. After speaking with Deb, I took some new pics so she could see which birds are going to end up with her. Funny as everytime i tried to take a picture of the 2nd eldest chick, the yf type 1 cinnamon chick, she would start rubbing her head on the perch. So from the nest of Sebby and Cheese, the first 4. Eldest with the 4th Dad with 2nd and 3rd Youngest I am keeping. Some pics of Tralia and Nibbler's youngsters. YF2 Normal YF2 with 4th Chick Eldest Eldest with YF2 Spangle
  5. Come on, lets put the square peg in the round hole. Obviously a dominant pied. Obviously golden faced. type 2 is a given. I would say sky blue, with the violet gene. I would also say opaline. So we have a golden faced type 2, opaline dominant pied that is carrying the violet gene. Right?
  6. Another update - all the youngsters are feathering up well. You know they are all growing up when Mum starts sleeping outside the nest box. This is the time I need to keep a careful eye on Mum's to ensure they are not looking for a second round of breeding. We are having quite a bit of rain here, and the little ones, although they are not exposed to the rain, I am sure, do nto fully understand what all the endless chatter is about in the aviary so late into the night.
  7. Well, all have fledged in sebby and Cheese's breeding cage. The journeychick is starting to have a peek out of the box, so I figure she will appear soon. I know that 2 of the chicks in tha box are double factor dom pieds, however I think that Gabrielle might actually be a single factor dom pied that is split to Ino. She has alot of black so i am unsure. We will see. No sign of movement yet in terms of fledging for nibbler and tralias young. Anxious!!!
  8. i find this hard to fathom. you cannot get green birds from blue budgies. A double factor yellow face looks white faced in a blue bird if i am right. But since the parents pass on one gene, that would mean that all the babies would have yellow faces, and those that look like dad obviously do not. help any genticists?
  9. I would rather they go to a good home with an aviary than they go to a pet shop or, and I know I may offend others on here, a cage.
  10. i agree with the violet and YF mauve observations.
  11. Well done, excellent looking birds
  12. okay Deb, this is where we are. My cousin said no so that is it. That means that these are the ones that are looking for a new home. Eldest chick from Sebby and Cheese - a yellow faced type 2 sky blue recessive pied cock 2nd chick from Sebby and Cheese - a yellow faced type 1 sky blue cinnamon wing hen 3rd chick from Sebby and Cheese - a golden faced type 2 opaline cinnamon wing cobalt hen 5th chick from Sebby and Cheese - a yellow faced type 2 violet ressive pied cock Maybe 2nd chick from Tralia and Nibbler - looks to be a yellow faced blue, not sure on type 1 or 2 or gender yet. I think this little one is male. If he is, then he stays. If not, then he might be looking for a new home. Discriminating on the basis of gender? Yesiree!!!!!!!!! As for the genders, so far we have established that Sebby and Cheese have what looks to be 3 boys and 3 girls, including the journeywoman who needs a name...please help here people. Tralia and Nibbler have what looks to be 2 boys and 2 girls Hugo and Angel look to have 2 girl and 1 boy, but too early to tell here i think with these guys. I will try to get some better cere shots.
  13. Great thread Daz. I really appreciate it. I am going to build some new breeding boxes, so this thread is veyr very helpful
  14. Well, i followed the link and let me say u (you) have some very nice budgies. I do not your hean is a grey-green, instead i think she is an opaline Texas Clear Body. Norm could telly you better, but that is my opinion. Love the 3 young from pair 5. All are going to look like Dad. Very cute. Who are the parents of the Yellow faced Violet and the greens? Not pair 5 obviously.
  15. 2 clutches actually Jimmy; Sebby and Cheese. Tralia and Nibbler and Hugo and Angel. Well, all of Sebby and Cheese's little ones have left the nest box. They are all learning to crack seed, eat corn and flap their wings. I am going to clean up the little avairy and they will all be placed in their. Give them a chance to fly around before confronting life in the big aviary. A lot of hens in this lot. Strange that there are so many. Deb, one of my cousins may want a male budgie, so I am hoping to hear from him ASAP. He is only 12, so obviously his mother has a big say. I can give them a cage and all of that stuff, and if it does not work out, he can always be returned to the aviary. If he wants a little one, it will probably be one of the pieds, so I have to see. I think I will keep all of the dom pieds (3), the spangles (3), the one of the recessive pieds, and probably the journeywoman (yes, the journeyman is female), so that would leave 2 recessive pieds and 2 cinnamon wings (one of which is an opaline goldenface and the other is a yellowface). So it looks like at least 3 are coming your way, possibly 5. Is that cool? Anyone else in Sydney looking for any baby budgies?
  16. Not all markets are bad. The first saturday of every month I go to Cobbitty Markets. There is one person there that sells budgies, cockatiels and finches. They are an elderly couple. I was watching the lady who had a hand raised cockatiel. She took it out of the cage and let it climb up the front of her. She obviouly loved it and it loved her. She did nto do this to show off but rather it was as she went over and talked to another lady who ran a stall. As for the birds, they are mostly all young. I actually bought Hugo there. he is a great bird and his only health concern was that he broke a blood feather, and any bird could do that. Neat, on the first saturday of may, the 3rd i think it is, go out to Cobbitty and see the people there, they are good people. It is held in the primary school that is on Cobbitty Rd. It is not far from you.
  17. I did know not if the Ino gene can mask the dom pied gene Give it some thought Deb - (Laughing out loud)!!
  18. Deb, I am actually a non-drinker these days, so beer or wine would be wasted on me. Sorry.
  19. Thanks Maesie, here are the rest of them as there were too many photos for one post so it continues here..... Tralia and Nibbler This is where the sad news comes in. the 5th little one did not make it. I looked in the nest box today and he was dead. Maybe he did not get enough food with the others demanding it? I am not sure. Sad. Anyway, the 4 survivors are going well. Eldest is definitely a Cobalt Cinnamon Spangle. Check out the close-up shot i took of the wings? 2nd is a yellow faced blue. normal wings 3rd and 4th are both spangles, one is white based and one is yellow based. Very cute. So there we go, by my next update, all of Sebby and Cheese's shoudl be fledged. The sooner they are eating on their own, the sooner they can be considered for a little trip to Deb's house. More feathering and fledging to come.
  20. okay, big clean up today, boxes fully cleaned out, and so photos taken. Good and bad news as always. Angel and Hugo They are going well, all their young are coming along well. Gabriel, formerly Pale Ale is feathering up well. he is going to have a lot more black than his siblings, and the Journeyman is looking very good, no signs of leaving the nest soon. It is funny, as I am expecting the journeyman to fledge anytime now, but I forget that he is the youngest of Sebby and Cheese's so he shoudl technically not leave the nestbox until they do. Anyway, photos below. Hugo and Angel Hugo is always eating, as you can tell by is face. Hungry mouths to feed. The Journeyman Eldest 2nd Eldest - verey few marking for a single factor dominant pied Gabriel, formerly pale ale Pile of cuties Sebby and Cheese Sebby has built her strength up and has returned to the aviary. Cheese is doing all the fatherly duties as the young are fledging. Cheese is a good teacher Eldest on his own 2nd eldest eating seed, then corn Young ones now are venturing out, demanding food. More photos in next post, that I cannot post until someome replies to this one i think
  21. 11 birds in one room? Noisy, smelly, cramped, gee, running otu of adjectives here.
  22. Cool. Whatever the blue colour, he/she...I am thinking he, well be a very good looking bird. Pale Ale is a little miracle. I might need to change his name. I think something with some very religious overtones might be needed. He will be a white bird with some markings, he is a miracle in many ways, his mother is Angel, so i think he might become either Gabriel, Leo (the whitelight on charmed - yes yes, useless knwoledge clutters my head) or Zauriel. Gabriel seems the most possible I think I was wondering about that patch. All of Cheese's youngsters have to be split. Dad is a recessive pied, so he has 2 recessive genes. regardless of mum, they all must be at least split. Deb, we will give them a week or two to see how they are going, then we will make a decision. Oh, and Kaz, thank you for those wonderful comments!!
  23. Thanks Kaz. Few questions. I know the eldest spangle will be blue, but what type of blue? violet like hugo's blue? it is too deepa blue for sky, maybe cobalt? hasn't pale ale filled out? If a bird does not have the patch on the back of its head, can it still be split to recessive? My little cinnamon has no patch, thus the question
  24. Deb, I am not interested in selling, this is a giveaway. Newcastle is alright. I might be heading up that way in the next couple of weeks anyway, so if i am, I will bring the birds and drop them in. My folks are going upto Bateau Bay for a holiday, and I might go up as well, we will see. I could simply drop them in if they are old enough by then to be eating by themselves. Also, I have school holidays coming up so a drive to Newcastle would not be a terrible thing for me. Neat, no need for a new thread. I like this one. Long may it reign - (Laughing out loud)!!!! As for the new pics, well here they are. Let me update first. Angel and Hugo's clutch is doing well. Angel is spending more and more time outside the nestbox. The journeyman looks like he might fledge soon, and the other three are all feathering up. Two at least look to have Hugo's incredibly bright blue/violet and that is very cool. Pale Ale is coming along well. Pale does not have the fluffy down feathers, but this is a result of him being so sick and having to put all his energy into surviving. Wonder if this will affect him later in life? Tralia and Nibbler are raising five little ones. Here they are the parents hanging out on the cage floor. This is the Eldest. Violet spangle maybe? Nibbler is split to Violet, like his Dad Zeus (R.I.P.) was. Second eldest looks to be a yellow faced blue 3rd and 4th look to be spangle, with one white wings and the other with yellow, probably yellow faced blue type 2 youngest is a big fella, but only now starting to feather up. cannot tell the colour yet Lastly is Cheese and Sebby's clutch. 3 have fledged, 2 are yet to do so. Eldest is a spitting image of dad, minus the golden face. 2 cinnamon girls, one is an opaline violet goldenface and the other a yellowface type 1 blue. 2 youngest are both pieds, but are yet to fledge. Saturday will see a large clean out of the cages, blocking of some nestboxes and the moving of sebby and cheese's chicks to a floor igloo. More pics will come then.
