Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
We have established that the eldest chick is a recessive pied, and he has his Dad's Golden Face II gene, thus the yellow throughout. Next 3 youngest are opaline blues, though there is some thought that their black feathers do not look as dark as they might. We will see how they turn out. Wondering what the other two turn out like. More like Dad would be nice.

Lilly And Peek A Boo
Maesie, You cannot blame a topic starter for souble posting. I know I am guilty of it at times. We simply want to update a thread, and the edit is not available for some reason, so if you want the info there, you have to double post. Enna, i do understand that comment you made earlier about no one reading your post, and how you got to the double posting situation. We should all make sure that we comment on posts we read, just to assist with the "no-double posting" rule.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
What a busy day. Took some more shots of the little ones of Sebby and Cheese. The eldest with all the yellow will be a Golden faced type II blue recessive pied I think. Little other colouring so far, but you can see a few black pin feathers coming through. The 2nd eldest looks to be an opaline blue The middle child looks to also be an opaline blue The 2nd youngest is too young to tell any colours yet The youngest is focusing on standing, pin feathers to follow shortly The big action happened in Angel and Hugo's nest box, where 2 little one's hatched on the same day. They joined the little journeyman so now there are 3 in there. I do not expect any red eyes but I will check later, if not today, tomorrow. Tralia is still sitting on her eggs, keeping them warm.

How many of those eggs hatch? Do the first few hatch or only the last few? I will get some new pics today Kaz.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
I so hope you are right. Milly and humphrey was such an upsetting result that i am not sure if I coudl cope with another failure in the breeding pairs. I remember posting that I was not sure that Hugo had the whole techniique of mating down right. I am worried that he "missed" so to speak, but Angel's body was already triggered to produce eggs, so she produced 7 eggs, and Hugo was just a flop, so to speak.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
i think they have gotten bigger just today Still unsure of the eldest. I am so impatient waiting for more feathers Babies 2 and 3 are looking like yellow face blues. Babies 3, 4 and 5 are too little too tell at the moment. I went back and checked some old posts on this thread, and Angel definitely layed her first egg on 17th Feb. Now, it takes 17 days for an egg to hatch, so since this was a leap year, the first egg shoudl have hatched on the 5th or 6th march. It is now the 10th and nothing. Not a good sign.

so any thoughts on what the yellow one will be. definitely black eyes, but alot of yellow. cannot be lutino as it has black eyes, a recessive pied cannot hide genes, so it has to be split to recessive, whatever it is. its mother is a fallow, but what can the fallow hide? Since the eyes are not red, it cannot be fallow, could it be receeive pied? Mum could be fallow split recessive, but it should have more colour one would think. Strange one.

Still not sure what these two will produce. I think we may get some yellow faced blues, who are all spit to recessive pied, but the interesting thing is that baby number 1 and baby number 2 look very different in terms of skin colouring. Dark wings v light wings.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
Daily update on the newly feathering friends. Milly and Humphrey are rebuilding their strength to return to the aviary. It is very sad that humphrey will not have a legacy. Sebby and Cheese are feeding their youngsters well. The eldest 2 are starting to feather up. There is a lot of yellow on the eldest, and maybe a small bit on the next eldest. Judge for yourself. Angel and hugo should have little ones any day now. At the moment, they are fostering the youngest of Sebby and Cheese, who was born in the nestbox of milly and Humphrey. What a little journeyman. Tralia is being a very good mum, sitting on her eggs. Nibbler meanwhile is looking for a way to get himself entered as a green faced blue budgie in a show. Damn calcium perches.

Favourite Colour
how do you choose? Favourite colour bird I ever owned was a pooly marked spangle- almost non existant, violet (also had a dark factor so it looked like a deep purple) male named Duke. His colour was the purple assocaiated with royalty, thus the name. he was magnificnet. Never seen one like him in real life - ever. He looked deep purple with clear white wings

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
There was no hanky panky. They were a couple for a long time, so no chance of being another Daddy as far as I can see. If you look at the pics, you can see that Cheese is a Yellow faced type II blue recesive pied, so the yellow faced gene going through them is not that strange.

only pin feathers so far, so we will see what can be seen. Not sure if that even makes sense. God I am tired!!!

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
redid the large avary today, so no new pics. pics tomorrow. i will be interested to see what people think of sebby's chicks. Whilst we came to the conclusion that mixing a fallow with a recessive pied would give you normal blues, there are a lot of yellow pin feathers coming through on the oldest, i think that one of the others might be opaline, so can you have a recessive pied male split to opline? Not sure on others, photos tomorrow hopefully

Eeeeekkkkkk
mice have not been a problem as my dogs catch them. they punce so far. i suppose terriers excel at this type of activity, and mine are no exception. i came home last saturday night to discover a rat in the aviary. I chased it out, but could not kill it. I have some rat traps that i bought online to use. i worked out the next day how it got in, and once I complete my safety door over the next week, that - the only possible way in, will be eliminated.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
sad evening here. i checked on the nest boxes here and in checking in Sebby's, I noticed that all her chicks were healthy and fed, and the fostered youngster from Milly's nestbox was dead. All 3 young look the the same, they seem to have food in their crops when the died, not much, but they did not wither away. They all looked to be underdevloped in terms of feather growth. All I can conclude is that they had some sort of genetic defect. Milly has had young before, so I know it is not her. All I can conclude then is that it is from Humphrey. Sad as i said, but neither milly nor Humphrey will be given the chance to breed again. Milly is now sitting on some eggs, and I will place some fake eggs in her nest to discourage her from laying anymore, but she and humphrey will now have the chance to build their strength back up before they return to the newly improved aviary

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
I am not sure about moving it back. That is fine to do if there are others in that nestbox, but since thsi little one is on his or her own, there is little chance that he/she will go back. milly has hatched one of sebby's eggs, and there are 2 more of these unhatched. Milly through her own egg out of the nest box. I cracked it open to see, and it was not fertilised anyway. Sebby and Cheese are doing a good jon raising them all. All look good and are getting fed. Angel is doign well. I think she has accepted the new little one and appears to be feeding this little one. None of hers have hatched, that i am aware of at this stage. Tralia is still sitting on her eggs, keeping them all warm. I will check how things are going in the morning and do an update again then, hopefully with pics

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
So i decided to put the rest of Sebby's eggs in with Milly, thinking none will hatch. That theory lasted for about 3 hours, when one hatched. I have moved the little one into the nest of Angel and hugo, who shoudl have their own little ones begin to hatch any day now

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
Another one from Milly's and Humprhey's nest box is dead. I feel so bad. I feel like I should have noticed it earlier. I do nto think they are getting enough food. Humprhey eats seed, a little soft food, spinach, drinks water and feeds Milly, but the young ones are not getting enough. I cannot risk the last little one. I have moved it into Sebby and Cheese's nest box, and I have moved their unhatched eggs out and given them to Milly. milly shoudl sit on the eggs and if they hatch, i will decide what to do then. hopefully Sebby will adopt the little one as her own. All the birds in that nest box seem to be doing well. Not sure what else I can do. This is the last hope for this one to survive. The other nest boxes are too far behind, as in they have eggs but no young, so I have to foster to Sebby. If the other eggs with Milly hatch, then Angel and Tralia might also have hatchings by then, so I can foster those out. If they do not hatch, they there is no nothing lost. Any thoughts?

Norm, I think the air crop thing was a combination of things, but mainly after looking at the deceased body of the litte one, and in particular its crop, I think there was a deformity there. Could not be helped.

Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates
morning - no changes, well almost none. Milly and Humphrey still ahve 2 good looking kids, growing well. Sebby and Cheese still have 5 young uns growing up before my eyes. Angel and Hugo still have 7 eggs, no hatchlings yet - hopefully today. Tralia and Nibbler now have 7 eggs. She may have started slowly but she has well and truly caught up. In a personal note, ever time I check the nest box, I am amazed at what a beautiful coloured bird Tralia is. I have had multiple discussions on what her colour is, and I am still undecided which way to lean. All I know is that she is one of my fave birds in terms of colours - yes, I am a spangle fan!!!! May she produce many.

See now Kaz, to me that is funny. me giving you a bird. (Laughing out loud). Never saw that coming. Might deliver it when I come over for a visit. Either July or October school hols. Not sure whihc one at this stage. New photos soon. I am going to clean milly's and sebby's nest box, check all youngsters and put more shavings in there, so pics will be then.
