  1. There are a few of us around. I suppose the question is why are we single? What are we doing about it? I once read something that said "you have to love yourself before you can love someone else". I am not sure "I love myself". Here is the question that I am asking - what are you doing about being single? If the answer is nothing, then why not? Are you happy being single or is it that you are afraid of change? What if you make a change and it makes no difference? How will that impact on your self worth? I will start the ball rolling... what an appropriate expression. I do not love myself because of the way I look. What am I doing? I have joined Weight Watchers and I am trying to be more active in losing weight and getting healthier. In 6 weeks I have lost 8 kg's and another weigh in tonight will see that number increase. Once I look in the mirror and do not hate what I see, perhaps it will be easier to believe someone else could not hate what they see. So there is my current story. What about you? No point just saying I am single and not happy about it. What are you doing to remedy that? Anything? Nothing? Why or why not?
  2. Mine attach themselves like glue to the cage wire at the sound of running water. none of this hiding from rain business.

Welcome to the forum. It is always refreshing to read from a new member that they are thinking about getting a budgie and they thought they should read up in advance. You read and hear far too many horror stories of people who did it in reverse, so well done to you on your approach. I hope that we can help with any questions you have, so please feel free to ask.
  5. Did you put pics in the other thread? What about putting a link to the old thread so we can see the pics if they are there? Any plans for pics in this one?
  6. You can nominate the name of the other pet store you are talking about. I can only think you are referring to Kellyville Pets. Is that right? They do not sell Show Budgies, only pet types. Bit more expensive as well.
  7. Dark brown cere on the hen means she has just gone out of breeding condition. When in breeding condition, her cere will be a light tan colour. A hens cere goes from out of breeding condition (white with a tinge of blue) to in breeding condition (tan) to past breeding condition (dark brown), when it begins to flake off and return to white. Pet shops will say what they have to to get a sale. Sad but true.
  8. went over to help my parents and twisted awkwardly and slightly strained my back so I could not make it. He will be speaking at the St George Branch in the next few months so I will hear him then. I suppose I did not give enough notice on here for anyone to attend. I will rectify that in the future.
  9. On Friday night 8th July Dr Rob Marshall, a well renowned avian vet will be speaking at the Pied Budgerigar Society of Australasia meeting held on the 2nd Friday of the Month at The Young Explorers Club, Weston Street, Panania. Now, I am not a member but I understand members from other clubs/branches have been invited along to listen. I am sure that every breeder/keeper of birds will find this talk interesting so fell free to attend. I am told it is open to all.
  10. The easiest way to tell is the stripes on the head. You will notice that Dad's stripes are mostly gone whilst Mum still has stripes. yes, Mum's stripes are still there, but it looks worse as there is a lot of blue around her head stripes. If you also look at the wings, you will see that Dad's body colour has replaced the black on the wings, where Mum has some blue on her wings but the back is mainly there.
  11. Very nice. From whom did you buy him? To help people realise the difference between pet shop prices, prices of stock birds and top prices, do you mind sharing roughly how much you paid for him?
  12. I agree with GB. Let her raise the chick as it will be good experience for her. If you are concerned about her "crushing" the chick, put some marbles or fake eggs under her. This will provide some more "support" for the chick.
  13. I am going to take some birds to a vet, but until i can I will treat the affected birds with AIL. I will remove these birds from the rest of the flock whilst they are treated. I wonder how these mites came to be in my aviary?
  14. I did a search for these earlier, and I did look at the pictures, but there was nothing that I thought looked like the feathers on my birds. That is why I had the confusion.
  15. Hey there, I have a bit of a strange thing happening with some birds in my aviary. They seem to have a feather issue, but I am not sure what it is. I plan on taking a couple to my avian vet in an attempt to determine what it is. I have no photos yet so let me try to describe what is happening. The bird appear to grow normal feathers (this seems to mainly affect their tail feathers). The feathers grow to the normal length, but in some parts there is a strange "strangulation" affect. It is like the there is some invisible string wrapped around some parts of the tail feather. The rest of the feather then appears to curl and droop. I cannot see anything on the birds, no dark spots of any type. It does not appear to be like French Moult, nor the normal Feather Mites that I am aware of. I will try to get some pics tomorrow but wondering if anyone has any ideas?
  16. I do see your point with the designer dogs. In NSW there is a glut of maltese. They are not terriers so I will not call them that. I do not blame the the guy for promoting a product. Personally I think the dogs are great. I blame the puppy farmers and the people who buy them from there. In the western world we take people off the visual medium way too seriously. I mean, if someone tweets famous tweets that they like something, sales soar. I heard that some of the young Hollywood A Listers get $10,000 for tweeting a product name. Good work if you can get it. I always laugh when an actor/actress wins golden globe or oscar for their brilliant performance, they get up on stage to receive their award, then they stumble and um and ah through the whole thing like a novice. The author of the articles in question is a person who had a fantastic knowledge of plants and has bred budgies for many years. As for his designer dogs on the show, vets appear on those shows and talk about breeds, so it is not like the shows host himself "road tested" a dog, but the vet who works on the show did. Sometimes I might disagree with Dr Harry but I respect his opinion as a vet. Here is a similar cicumstance. If the carpenter builds something and recommends something on Better Homes and Gardens and there is a negative social aspect that occurs due to his recommendation, I do not blame Jo Griggs as she hosts the show. I kind of think you are blaming the wrong person here and not remembering a show from many years ago with as well as it might be remembered.

    very nice
  18. I know this is a rant, but to think that because one person said it was good the result was the puppy farms and poor quality animals is a bit far fetched for me. I have seen him on the show talking about his budgies. Do we blame him for all budgie farms churning out bird after bird? I have met the man and I have found him to be a nice guy. You like everyone have the right to rant, but I personally believe you are being a bit tough on him in your rant.
  19. If you wwant to make them bread, go ahead I say. Good on you. If you are feeding them a small portion a day, good for you and lucky them. It is not overdone to give them various small treats. Good job with the bread, keep up the thoughtfullness.
  20. I have bought birds from ACE Colony Budgies before and i still drop in there occassionally just for a look. Nice birds and good place. I could recommend it as a good place to go.
  21. I think you'll get some droppings for that money
  22. Come on... you did not spend big at Wynnum. Thought you were saving up for this one?
  23. You are right there is always the potential for normal birds, but you are greatly increasing the risk of birds born with deformities. i suppose it comes down to what is more important to you and how willing you are to take the risk. There are a lot of things that go on in many animal industries that are not talked about at the dinner table, so to speak.
  24. You might be a more successful breeder than me, but genetically regardless of the species, interbreeding is not good for the animals.
