Since they are all looking like 'real birds' now, I'd thought I post an update of the chicks of Mango and Lucky. The eldest blue baby is bigger than Mango already. We had our first explorer today. The second oldest one was found on the bottom of the cage looking a little frightened so I helped it back up to the nest where she hopped back in after almost being pushed back down by Lucky who also wanted back in the nest at the same time.

I let my daughter Kathleen handle the babies today. She's 5. She was so excited. Cleaned the nest again last night and took a few photos of the babies progress. Baby 1 Baby 2 Baby 3 My hands are wet in the images because I had just finished soaking off dried poop from the babies legs. Wow, just realized baby 3 doesn't look yellow in the pics and s/he is.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. It helps in understanding how some things can be figured out quicker than others.

Don't some other types of budgies have red eyes at the beginning too? That's why I asked how they knew for sure it was lutino.

How do you know immediately if it's a lutino?

No pics as the camera focussed on the wrong thing, but a little note..... First baby is going to be blue! So, now I know Lucky has some blue parentage in her background. The other two have lots of yellow on them, so I imagine they'll be greens. I think this is so interesting how this all works. The blue baby head started off a dark colour and still looks dark. I assume this is because of the barring that young budgies get. The other two with the yellow have only yellow on their heads, does that mean anything or will they get some 'bars' later yet?

okay, time for a little update. I got around to cleaning the nest box. I was a little worried about it since I've never done it before and didn't quite know how to work it out. But I figured out a way. I got a large bowl and stuffed papertowels in it. I put the babies in there while I washed the bottom of the nest box and the sliding doors. The first baby has quite a dark coloured head. The second baby's head is yellow and third is too young yet.

Just wondering (and I did look through the FAQs but they didn't tell me).... when do baby budgies get their first real feathers? e.g. 7 days after hatching? 8? 10? I was just curious as to when the babies will start to look like "real" birds.

This is what I saw a few minutes ago. I'm going to try and add some more shavings in soon, but so far Lucky just boots them out.

Well as of first thing this morning, there are 3 chicks in the nest. They sure grow fast and the size difference between them all is quite amazing. I'm more used to baby finches and they're usually hatched within a day or so of each other so they're close in size.

I checked late this afternoon and it appears that she's at least fed it a little. I think I hear little begging sounds sometimes too, unless that's Lucky talking to the chick....

Well, I know they were fertile. Got to wondering yesterday when I didn't see anything. But I did a quick check before work and this is what I saw. Sorry about the quality. This was hurry up and take a couple of shots and download them before leaving for work in less than 5 minutes. It doesn't appear to have been fed yet. So, I guess the next thing is seeing if she'll feed the baby.

Today's the day I start finding out whether or not Lucky's eggs were fertile. Not really expecting much, but am crossing my fingers.

It wouldn't let me vote on the 2nd set. I ended up picking something I didn't really want from the first section.
