  1. Nice birds Fordmob ....you would have reason to be hopeful of some good chicks out of them. And I look forward to seeing the results. PS Admin duties ask me to advise you to please edit your photos to sizes 480 by 640 before posting please
  2. It is, I believe what RIP calls being "pied out" the differences in ceres and iris rings in eyes, and markings on wings
  3. You got some nice broad headed babies amongst that lot Splat
  4. Both eyes .................the right eye has an iris ring. If the bird is df dom pied the other eye may not have an iris ring....its common in DF dom pieds for one eye to have an iris ring and the other not. The photo you already put up shows an iris ring in the right eye, which means NOT recessive pied. ( Not convinced Fordmob ?? )

You sit next to those eggs and check with a stop watch and notebook........too flippin hard for me
  6. Sorry Fordmob but you are incorrect. The bird has iris rings and no recessive pied has iris rings. It is a male though..........either lightly marked dominant pied or a df dominant pied but not recessive. Girl ? NOPE........boy

  10. Have a nest right now with 7 babies.......have to check at least 3 times a day because one or both parents are messy feeders. Babies constantly have faces plastered with food which sets quickly.....nostrils covered beaks glued shut. If you dont get the food off their face quickly it erodes their beak, stops them from being fed and stops breathing.........another good reason for constant nestchecking........take note those who dont check nests often enough.
  11. :D :D Last time I saw Quiche and his mother Omelette
  12. Hey mate. Parents operate off the positives of their children being both reponsible and helping out around the house and garden. For instance, if you never ever vaccum the house, help with dishes, bring in the washing off the line, help around the yard, with the rubbish bins, any digging or hard yard work......... parents wont usually do too much to help you acchieve your dreams. Best way is to be a helpful and positive kid in the home and not just before or when you want something. If you are already doing all that then you now need to have a plan. 1. Location for an aviary. 2. Seek one out you can afford and that doesnt mean parents pay for ....sometimes a shed is free or cheaper than an aviary and can be converted easily with some tin sheets removed and aviary mesh added. 3. You do the siteworks to locate the shed or aviary. 4. You have a budget that covers not only seed and vegies but a fund put aside for any vet fees that may crop up along the way. If you havent saved any money start now and get a part time job. My kids, at your age, used to sell the Sunday newspaper on a saturday night for pocket money. That gave them $40-$50 each. 5. Write up a full proposal for your parents that shows you have thought of everything and it wont cost them a cent now or in the future. Make a contract that you all sign that means you will stick to any promises you make either about financial or labour input. Make it thorough so they can see that you have researched and thought of absolutely everything.

  15. A week to ten days to eggs mostly....I have had eggs in 6 days from a pair.
  16. The hawk we had in our yard took a neighbours chicken last night too
  17. Funny thing............we also have a hawk at our birds tonight ....just kept coming back and is afraid of nothing. I looked up the pictures for your swamp harrier and its the same bird we have a problem with too We have been told to use the mesh they wrap fruit trees in to cover your aviaries...its large and cheap.
  18. A lot of hens die trying to lay eggs through wintery weather ( cold ) as their muscles to expel the egg dont seem to work so well when they are cold as well as the levels of calcium varying throughout both hens and diet. I think you will find in talking to people that a lot of breeders lose hens around this time too. Many breeders I have talked to recently speak of losses of hens.
  19. We have had the slab laid for the garage so once that gets built over the next week or two, it leaves the balance of the yard for me to rethink a new breeding room and aviaries. We worked out today I will have a space of approximately 8 metres by 5 metres. The only things making it slightly difficult will be an existing shed set high on an overkill kinda cement slab which my husband refuses to demolish so I have to use that slab as part of the new construction and there is a tree at the back which can stay but we will have to take out on of its large branches facing the yard. here's the area for the garage and in this photo it shows the shed, the tree and some of the area to the right.....there's another 2 metres or so to the right that I can use and 2 metres forward from the shed I can use too. I wont be keeping the current aviaries as far as I know, but things evolve so we will see. This wont happen overnight unless I get a massive injection of spare cash.
