Arkady Is Off To The Vet Tomorrow
Well poor Arkady has been presenting with polyuria/polydipsia which means drinking and weeing a lot (yes birds actually wee, I didn't know that either), so I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow and he'll get to stay for the day. I was thinking I'll just take the whole cage in which means Bacardi and Izzy as well, because if he is there the whole day he would probably like the room to move around. So here's hoping all's good and it is something simple. He has been a little off for awhile, but it has been exam period so unfortunately he has had to wait, I feel kinda bad about this, but he is still singing and sleeping on one foot, so I am not too worried. I think it might be kidney problems, but his only signs are the ones above so it could be a manner of things. Diabetic budgie??? Anyway I hope all goes well tomorrow. Wish me and him luck.

An Important Petition
We don't have native budgies. I read a reader's digest article about them a couple of years back and it took them several weeks of driving around the outback before they saw a flock and not even a big one. It said that budgies used to be that numerous that they blocked out the sky, but now they are really not very common at all. Sort of passenger pigeonesque, except they are still around, just not in such large numbers.

An Important Petition
Wow I should have started on this topic earlier. I have a few things to say: Desexing and returning a feral cat to the environment is better than killing a feral cat. By returning the desexed cat to its territory no new cat will take over, that means also that there will be less available food for any fertile cats and thus if the population is full in a certain area no new fertile cats will move in. If you kill the cat, a new cat will move in, most likely a young fertile animal just left the mother. This animal is able to breed. So no matter what you do you will always have an animal filling the spot. IT is better to have desexed ones filling that spot than fertile ones. So imported budgies don't eat wildlife. But if one were to escape and breed with the native budgies then it would ruin those blood lines, the babies will not be as good at surviving and if they do they will breed with others and eventually the line will become impure and the original species will be lost. This could mean extinction of the species in the wild or just pet like ones in the wild. This hasn't really happened yet as wild budgies are quite rare these days. However it is the reason why we in New Zealand cannot breed and on sell/release our pet kakarikis as they will endanger the bloodlines of the native ones which could end up in unhealthier birds leading to extinction. Ligers and tigons should not be fertile. Mules are not fertile. This is because they are different species and usually have different numbers of chromosomes there fore when they interbreed they have odd numbers of chromosomes. A horse has 64 chromosomes and a donkey has 62 therefore a mule has 63. This interferes with spermatogenesis. Noone is actually sure how the sterility is caused but it happens. Only animals in the same genus can interbreed, hence the reason centaurs do not exist today, or sphinxes, or griffins ( a hippogrif is a cross between a horse and a griffon) or minotaurs. However when Neanderthals were alive there would have been crosses as they are the same species as us, but a different subspecies we are Homo sapiens sapiens, they are Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. Interesting huh? So perhaps some of your dimwitted or slightly flatter foreheaded "colleages" or bosses at work got more of the neanderthal persuasion in their family line. tee hee :hap: I just like to point out the butterfly effect: The flap of a butterfly's wing on one side of the world can cause a tornado on the other.

So Not Happy Jan!
You should definately get a landline. Just in case your mobile runs out of battery and it's an emergency. Cheaper too I think.

That's hilarious I've just been replaying that game and was playing it the night I first read this post. Hilarious. It was my study procrastinator.

I just finished all my exams today and am currently enjoying the idea of a long 3 week break with nothing to do

Rats Again
I would use Timms traps. They are humane traps that instantly kill the animal. Usually by breaking the neck, so are very quick. Especially if they hit the head then it is instant. They make them for possums here, I don't know if they are in Australia, but I'm sure they would make rat ones. I got a mouse trap called "The better mouse trap" by Intruder inc. I think they do rat size ones. They are snap traps and kill mice instantly. I know I witnessed it. I heard it go and went to inspect it to make sure the mouse was dead. No movements whatsoever, so it would have severed the spinal cord. Be very careful where you set them of cause. I caught a sparrow by accident . However it lived with no ill effects whatsoever and flew away instantly . I was confused but happy nonetheless and was glad to learn my lesson without a needless death. I would say the snap traps are the most humane way to go, because if it gets them properly (the plastic ones are better than the wooden ones) it causes instant death. Rats have a very unpleasant way of killing and eating their prey. I had a whole litter of baby bunnies killed and eaten like hollowed out, so that when I looked in the nest they looked normal, until I went to pick them up and found there was no bottom to them. They were just a shell. Wild versions of animals are way different to their domestic counterpart. Domestic animals have been bred and chosen for their docility and friendliness. Pet rats are the absolute goo monsters and very smart. Wild rats are the ultimate predator, fast, lethal and even smarter. Pet dogs are great loyal companions, wild wolves are shy and dangerous (the european ones especially). pet cats can be big piles of purring fur, wild ones (trust me we've had the lecture) can be even more dangerous than dogs, sharp at all ends and able to use your body to climb up to your head. Pet mice are little fluffballs of cute, wild mice hate you and will do anything to get away (even part wild ones, wild mice got in with mine, bred with them and made babies, these babies were then named pitbull and rottweiler can you guess why? (sorry to rottweiler owners I know these dogs aren't as aggressive as their reputation, but I was 10 years old at the time)) I think this is the case with all animals especially carnivores. Herbivores don't really like eating you that much, although deer can be pretty mean at times, mind you they haven't been domesticated for long and even these ones are way more docile, having had an antler almost in my eye I speak from experience. Yes rats and all other vermin do have rights and if you are found to be breaching these rights you can be punished by law. You must check all traps every 24 hours. Any animals found to be suffering can lead to consequences. If I'm away for longer than a day I will not set my traps.

Plastic Branch
Budgiues actually have tetrachromatic colouring ie they see more colours than we do. They can see ultraviolet light too! Apparently birds are attracted by the colour red, it is their favourite colour. That is why all flowers that get pollinated by birds are red or have red on them.

Baby Sitting My Babies

Plastic Branch
My guys love the little wooden ball with bristle/string/plantfibres coming out the bottom. They preen it and eat it and there is a little bell on top that rings when they use it: here's a picture of it actually: I also saw this awesome as chew toy that had plant fibres, its of wood and pieces of paper (rolled up to look like little lollies) that looked like it would be awesome fun and it was cheap too $5. I didn't buy it. I'm feeling poor

I Think This Is Great...
Is that real ? Then it is pretty awesome then. It's true eh prisoners get a lot of luxury (I don't have cable). Some homeless people even commit crimes just so they can go to prison.

Fridge And Washing Machine
lol at Harvey normal. Do you have a bed? The only furniture I own is a bookshelf, a desk and a giant budgie cage. I don't even own a bed (I'm borrowing one). My inside budgies have their cage on top of two smaller cages as a stand ( I really need to get another table or book shelf or something) Oh wait, I have a TV and cabinet!
