Grey?
That's awesome Libby. Yep definitely not from another cock. She wouldn't be able to store semen through producing a clutch. Yay a recessive!. Recessives can be carried around for ages, because the only way they can be shown is by breeding with another animal that has that same recessive gene and that usually means breeding back to the first beastie that produced it so that the offspring will have two genes that are identical by descent.

Arkady Is Off To The Vet Tomorrow
Well he's home today. He was looking pretty happy at the vets. I brought him home and as soon as he sees the other two, he tries to chew his way out of the little carry cage. lol He has to go in a separate cage as I have to give him doxycycline in his water. This means he isn't allowed any vegetables or any mash or anything with liquid in it, so that he definitely drinks his medicine. His poops seem to have less liquid in them so that is good. I got a few shots of him. He looks a little crabby, but that is because he saw the orange light on my camera and knew that a flash was coming so he kept closing his eyes. He just hopped down to have a snack of seeds now and is having a preen.

Partial Paralysis
Infrared radiation is produced form all things that make heat. I'm currently emitting infrared. Woot! Do infrared lamps just make more infrared or something

Grey?
The ways to prove if it is a recessive grey: Pair it to a normal blue: If babies come out blue then it is recessive Repair the parents making sure the hen is not bred with any other birds. Infact don't let her near any of your other birds from now on and let her raise a second clutch with the same male, just to make sure that she was not impregnated by another male. Do you have any other grey birds though? I think it is highly possible that it is a recessive grey.

Grey?
Look at the chick's cheek patches they are grey not blue as in a mauve. Mauve is produced by two darkfactors hence two violets can produce a mauve, because in order for violet to be visual it requires a dark factor (except in double violet factor skyblues) Thus dark-factor-wise a violet is usually a cobalt or a mauve. Skyblue visual violets are no so common. Inorder to produce a mauve both parents need to carry a dark factor. The chick is grey. Of course the cock would have produced violets and mauves with another cobalt bird. He is a violet so he is carrying 1 dark factor and at least 1 violet factor. pairing him with a cobalt hen will produce, violets, cobalts and mauves, it should also produce skyblues.

The Bratterz....my Inside Budgies
Thankyou Libby she is a yellowface type 2 violet cinnamon opaline spangle. Quite a mouthful. It is quite funny that sometihng that colourful could come from a blue bird: Izzy. (apparently he carries cinnamon, violet and opaline ) (her mum is Saffy) I'm very proud of her as you can tell :budgiedance:

Grey?
No a sky will not give you a mauve as a sky carries no dark factors I have read of a recessive type of grey but this is not very common at all *goes to try and find it* I found an article about it. here it is:Reccessive grey article There used to be an English recessive grey which is apparently extinct, I'm sure of course there would be a number of birds that carried it. The new recessive is now called Australian recessive grey.

The Bratterz....my Inside Budgies
Here are a few pictures of Bacardi and Izzy during outside time minus poor Arkady. Father and daughter surveying their reign of terror. "Everything the light touches will be yours one day, yours to chew, terrorize and bite at" Izzy scratches Then he finds another post: Formerly introduces himself with a kiss And starts to have a good head rub/scratch And again *floof* *finishes floof* What? Bacardi decides to have a preening session: Does my butt look big? I'll preen it down *half floof* Chubby cheeks!!! Oooh I'm annoyed with photobucket I've been messing around with them for ages and they keep making the sizes wrong or flip them round

Arkady Is Off To The Vet Tomorrow
I just got another call. His tests came back negative for Chlamydia (can get false negatives though apparently) He's been looking much better since Friday and his poops seem to be much better. All his blood work came back good, no apparent kidney problems, but his smears did not come out well enough to look at so they are going to redo them tomorrow. She thinks it might be behavioural. He's been on doxycycline which may be why he is doing so much better, but there is nothing definitive at this stage. If his blood smears show that he has an infection then they will look into it further. When he is sent home he needs to be in his own cage and such so that I can continue to give him the doxycycline. She suggested it might be because he has been recently separated from his mate, although I don't think they were that close to begin with. I feel a bit like a bad mummy now, but I can't have all 11 in my bedroom again, it was quite hectic. So I'll see what happens tomorrow. It is likely, Mr fuzzbutt will be coming home . She says he is absolutely lovely and loves his millet. (I think she likes him).

Late Night Budgie Chat
I find that if something startles one or sets it off, it starts everyone else off like a chain reaction. And they don't stop until you tell them to shush. When no one is singing then noone else is getting set off. It seems to only take one budgie to chirp and then the next to chirp and they all join in because everyone else is doing it. Well.. I've trained my budgies to go quiet when I shush them.

Help!
That's great news Erin. I'm glad heis doing better Side note: I continuously change my budgies' seed brand every week, because it depends what is available at the supermarket and which supermarket I go to and I never have any problems. I think it is because their diet is always changing, so they are used to it.

Help!
Black poos are apparently a sign that the birds have not eaten in a while. Green poos mean stress I think and not eating as well? Not 100% sure on those. Make sure they have plenty of water. Diarrhoea if that is what it is can really dehydrate them. Keep them warm. I would definitely have a go with the raspberry cordial as this will at least give them some glucose. I'm a little skeptical of the antibiotics, because if it is diarrhoea antibiotics can be good and then bad as they kill all bacteria even the good ones. I'll just look at my pharmacology notes... Give him some water with sugar. Don't make it too concentrated or this could dehydrate him more. If you are unsure just give him water. Direct quote from my notes:" Antibiotics are nearly always contraindicated in gut disease but are often used in veterinary practice" "if injudiciously used will complicate recovery from diarrhoea" "Additional adverse effects of antibiotics include vaious side effects such as anorexia, vomiting, and iatrogenic diarrhoea that can confuse the clinical picture and delay recovery" This is because antibiotics result in changes in the intestinal microflora and can lead to overgrowths of undesirable bacteria causing further irritation. Thus antibiotics should only be given to an animal with diarrhoea if the exact pathogen is known. I'll just have a look back at the pictures and see if I can tell what it is (diarrhoea is easy to confuse with polyuria in birds and I am not so experienced in that area yet). It's hard to tell from the picture. Is the faecal part runny? Or is there just a lot of clear liquid (the urine) around the faeces causing it to be gooey? Are the faeces( don't count the whole dropping just the faecal part) liquid or do they still have a form to them? Diarrhoea is when the feaces and urates and urine all mixes up and forms one gooey brown mess. Look at a very fresh one, because in that picture I can't tell whether the "water" surrounding the poo is on the paper or has been soaked into the paper from the faeces. In either case, he is losing a lot of fluid so make sure he is getting a lot of fluid to drink. Maybe a sports drink might be a good idea (but only if it is isosmotic).
