Male Budgies Cere Going Brown...
Still get him checked out anyway as it could be some other cause. Some tumours are benign such as sertoli cell tumours. These secrete oestrogen and make the male budgie more feminine. They can continue to grow and compress other organs though. Malignant tumours can destroy testicular tumours causing a decrease in testosterone production. Malignant tumours are worse as they often spread to other areas of the body. However get him checked out. Also is his cere crusty? Some scaley face mite infections can cause crusting over the cere that makes it look brown.

I Can't Stop Crying :(
Chryso, sorry to hear that. Lets hope it is nothing as vets tend to freak out heaps about their own pets. Could it maybe just be an egg? Maybe she just has an inflamed bursa of fabricus. Or maybe an egg peritonitis. Lets think happy thoughts, like a lipoma or a benign neoplasm or an abscess. Huggles anyway. They always get sick around exams don't they. One of my budgies decided to get quite sick with green faeces and then went off of her food altogether. I had to crop tube her for a week and she lost heaps of weight. She is on the mend now. I might get her checked out after exams. But she chose to do that during study week, the little brat. Your babies always like to be the cutest things in the world whenever you are scared they are going to die, it makes it harder.

What Items/medications Should I Ask For From The Vet
I didn't mean any of that. I was slightly put off by the inuendo that vets don't give out medications because all they want is to get more money. That is not the reason. The reasons were as I posted. Also I haven't been on this forum for 2 weeks, so I haven't been following any topics.

Chlamydia Psittaci
Yes. Quite true Elly. If they haven't had much immunilogical challenge then their immune system won't be as good as it could be. That's why farm kids (or kids with pets) are always healthier than city kids. Correct you on the super virus though, it is a super bacteria. Chlamydophila is a bacteria.

My Birds Keep Getting Sick.
Sounds like they gave you doxycycline. That is an antibiotic which also has effects against some protozoa (which is what Trichomonas aka Canker is). It sounds like trichomonas in your birds. Doxycycline may not be affective against trichomonas in particular or they may be resistant to it. My pharmacology notes do not mention the specific protozoa it is effective against. Get a sick bird into the vet. They will probably perform a crop wash on your bird. Take in the dead ones so that a necropsy can be done. These need to be relatively fresh or else the body begins to autolyse and diagnosis cannot be made from the necropsy very effectively. If it is canker, then because it is spread by the birds feeding each other then they will probably all need ot be treated.

What Items/medications Should I Ask For From The Vet
Yes I know, that is why I didn't quote you. I was referring to what Kaz said. First aid is good. However I do not know what legal classification Turbosole falls under as that would be quite important. To me, Canker isn't really an emergency thing as it is a parasite, I would think that once they have become ill from it, then it is getting a little bit late. Trichomonas causes ulcerative lesions in the upper gastrointestinal tract. So you probably wouldn't have been able to do much for your bird anyway. I would look into treating the rest of your birds or get them seen too. It's sort of like electricity. You may know which wires do what (earth wire etc) but could you wire a whole house, safely and legally? That is why they have registered electrictians.

Quarantine Advice Please-
Things spread by dander. So PBFD, Polyomavirus. Respiratory viruses and bacteria, so Chlamydophila. Cryptococcus. I can't think of all right now. I'm in study mode at the moment and my head is very full of stuff and other stuff is bouncing off of it. Avian influenza viruses etc. (not all avian flus are bad, there are more than one, just like not all human flu viruses are bad)

Blood In Droppings
Good to hear he is doing okay. Justa side note. Feeding your birds red coloured berries will colour their droppings red

Chlamydia Psittaci
It is now Classified as Chlamydophila psittaci. They change their names all the time. Vets will not use or be unlikely to use tetracyclines in young or breeding animals as it discolours the bones (and teeth) yellow in growing animals. It can also cause a temporary cessation in bone growth. So if you bring a young bird in then they will probably use another antibiotic. Doxycycline is a type of tetracycline. Also it is green urates and not green faeces that are one of the symptoms. Neat. Why do you need antibiotics? Some strains can be hard to treat because overuse of tetracyclines in the past have created resistant strains.

What Items/medications Should I Ask For From The Vet
Actually they tend not to give you prescribed drugs without a prescription, because it is A) illegal for many drugs, the drug is very expensive, C) should not be used without proper direction and knowledge eg antibiotics, antiarrhythmics, vasodilators (these last two are especially dangerous if not used properly), D) many people do not diagnose their animal correctly (that is why we have vets, people who have been trained for 5 years or longer on how the body works and how drugs work and interact with the body), to do this you generally need to do tests, bloods, smears, urinalysis you name it depending on the condition, not to mention 5 years of teaching and learning, E) some drugs are abused by clients, as in, the client will use the drugs on them selves, such as morphine and ketamine <--these drugs in particular are kept under lock and key and are not to be kept in the car, because people will steal them. Any drug that requires a prescription does so because it is illegal to obtain without one and if a vet were to give out drugs with out proper justification, they can be brought in front of the court and fined heftly or even lose their license. We have to justify why we prescribe certain drugs and if there is no evidence for its need, we get into trouble. Clients also need to be informed how to use the drug and by giving out random drugs the vet is putting the client at risk as well. You don't see human doctors giving people random drugs when they don't need them.

Scaleyface Mite?
Secondly. Do not use antibiotics without approval from a vet. I'm going to say one thing. With the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria in the world, people are looking to place the blame somewhere. Some people say it is the vets' faults for over prescribing antibiotics, some say it is the human doctors' faults for over prescribing antibiotics and many agree that it is the clients and patient's faults for using them incorrectly, especially without prescription. If they find new resistant drugs popping up in animals, they are going to blame vets, regardless of whether or not it was a vet prescribing them and they may chose to ban the use of antibiotics in all animals. This means that if this happens you will not be able to use antibiotics to treat your animals at all. I'm surprised that pet shops can sell them. I also want to point out that what some people call antibiotics are not antibiotics. Antibiotics are drugs that are given to animals specifically to kill bacteria. Nothing more, nothing less. They are not painkillers, or anti inflammatory s . This is not a dig at the poster. I just thought I would write this as the issue has popped up countless times. I should probably make a whole topic out of it. But maybe later.

Any Suggestions?
Hepatic lipidosis Especially in obese birds. I am 78% sure one of my birds has this. It is a very common problem, but not many people know about it.

Has He Had Enough?
Hugs. It is a very hard thing to put them down. It always seems that just before you take them in, they start being really cute and make it hard for you to make the decision. Saffy decided to perk up and eat seeds at the vets and she looked so cute. She was all fluffy and her cheeks were so puffy and she looked so cute, but she was very sick. With Arkady I wasn't able to see him before he died. He died at the vet hospital while I was in lectures and it has only just hit me now that I really wish I could have seen him before he died. He was my naughty bubba and I miss him.

Normal?
I think the flirtation is cute. My late Arkady was very flirtatious and used to flirt with the air! He would just sing and bob his head at nothing.
