Guest Jemini
I have an appt tomorrow with our local avian vet 'cos Homer our grey male is still fluffed up and I want him checked out to be on the safe side. My problem is that I have difficulty handling him (I've got Microsoft Corporation ® and very unsteady hands). We've got a largish box that I can transport him in and my partner said he'll move him before he goes to work. However he leaves for work at 7am and the appt isn't until 10.35 and I'm worried about the length of time Homer will be in the box. Has anyone got any advice? Will he be okay for that length of time? I really don't want to stress him out especially if he's sickening for something!! Link to comment

I think the box would be stressful! Link to comment

It would be less stressful. As a one off, your budgie will probably be okay, but a tiny cage would be better. Also, turn up early for your appointment, they may well see you sooner and you can get home and get him back in his cage. Good luck! Link to comment
Guest Phoebe
Throw a sprig of millet in for him in case he gets hungry. :ausb: Link to comment

It's only the time of being putinto the box and the moving of the box to the car and vet that will be a bit stressful to him. Link to comment
Guest Jemini
The cage he's in with his friend is far to big for transportation and unfortunately I don't have one that's smaller. I've been up half the night worrying about this and even contemplated cancelling the appt :hap: Link to comment

Good luck and try not to get stressed yourself. All will work out in the end :hap: Edited March 24, 2006 by budgiebird Link to comment
Guest Jemini
Well Homer was put in his box with some millet and a bit of salad at 7.30am. I phoned the vets at 8 but she said the bird guy wouldn't be there 'til 10.30. Went for the appt and he didn't turn up until 11.15 :hap: Anyway it appears that Homer has lost weight so the vet gave him an injection of antibiotics and vitamins (£20) and I have to go back on Tues (another £15). The problem is tho' determining what's caused it. Their food hasn't changed and neither has their environment. The other bird appears fine ................... so what on earth can've happened to poor old Homie?? He's chirping away now in his cage tho' so I think he's already feeling a little better :ausb: Link to comment

Guest Jemini
Did the vet do any tests to see what was wrong? Not really. He felt all over his body and listened with his stethescope but other than that nothing. Maybe that's enough I don't know. Link to comment
Guest Lin
MMm, that's not right that he didn't at least take a sample of poo to test. I would have thought some blood would have been in order with symptoms like that. Is there another avian vet you can see? In the meantime, weigh the little one (digital scales, weigh a container, pop him in, weigh again, and you will get his weight). I would weigh in a couple of days and if he's lost anymore weight would be straight back to the vet. Is there a neighbour who can pop him in the box closer to the time? Link to comment

He could see very slightly runny poos in the box so maybe he's going on that for the mo and I've got an appt to go back on Tuesday. He does seem slightly perkier than he was this morning so hopefully the injection is doing ssome good. Unfortunately there are no other specialist avian vets near here. This guy has to travel 40k to get to the vet that allows him to use their premises - stupid. When I had a sick budgie before (she had a tumor at the top of her leg) I just took her to an ordinary vet. She'd chewed her leg virtually off so he cut off the remainder (sorry if this is nasty). She was okay for a while but the tumor came back and he/we decided to operate to try to remove it. She died under anaesthetic. That vet, whilst being very nice and understanding (and he didn't charge us) didn't really appear to have much of a clue so I wouldn't want to take Homer to any vet that wasn't a specialist!!
