Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and have had several budgies previously and now my son would like to get one. I have always got them from pet shops and they have varied from stepping up onto my finger from day one to trying to remove my finger from day one :fear

Obviously I'd like my son's first budgie to be as "friendly" as possible so after reading here it looks like the best bet is to get one from a breeder that was handled from an early age.

Can anyone tell me if any Adelaide breeders have any available in the near future? We don't intend to breed or show it so a "show" reject would be fine as long as it would make a good pet.

By The Way my son is 10 years old so he will always be supervised when near the budgie

(read: I'm getting the budgie but letting him think its his ;) )

Cheers

Phil

Edit... again ;) Thanks for moving my post to its own thread Kaz. I have now found the wanted section so I have posted in there too.

By way of further introduction, as I said I have had several budgies, love birds, finches and a crazy but much loved galah over the years and now that my son is keen to get one he has rekindled my interest as well. As with most things I have found in the past that any venture seems to go better if you listen to the experts first, hence I posted here rather than just going to our local pet shop.

The info on this site looks great so I have an afternoon of reading ahead of me and hopefully soon I'll have some pics for you. Expect lots of questions ;)

Cheers again

Phil

Welcome to the forum. Good luck in just reading for the afternoon, before you know it the week has passed and you are still stuck in here (willingly)! It's the best place to hang out.

Hope you find a nice budgie and please post us some pictures so that we can share your excitement with you.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I'll be posting lots of pics once we get the little fella. :D

Just out of curiosity how rare are budgies in the US and Canada? I sometimes hear in the news of people trying to smuggle aussie birds and eggs out so I assume they must be quite hard to get over there to risk those sort of fines or imprisonment (not to mention what the poor birds are put though!!).

Budgies are not rare in the USA. In fact our american budgie lovers have termed their budgies "American Budgies" :D Some of our types of budgies are harder for them to get or find near them but budgies are commonly found in petshops and with breeders and pet owners all over the USA and many other parts of the world.

Yes you can get budgies here all the time it is the "show type" AKA English type that are not found commonly in the pet shops, but you can find the "pet type" AKA American at almost any pet store...in fact they are bird rescuse organization here for those people who impulse buy and dont' commit to their pet budgie and now we have budgies that need homes.

Yeah I was just reading in my sons new budgie book that budgerigar is actually the indiginous Australian name for them from their words "betgerrygah" which in turn means pretty bird. (I'm sure this info is all on here anyway but I found it interesting  )

It says they're also called Undulating Grass Parakeets, shell parrots, warbling grass parakeets, canary parakeets and zebra parakeets by ornithologists.

I think budgerigar sounds much better, thanks to our original Aussies!! :D

Haha!! I was reading up on this as it tickled my curiosity. Sounds like the juries out... as one person said "if budgerigar means "good food" then why isn't all bush tucker called budgerigar?"...

Perhaps it means good "light snack" or "canapaes" or even "Hors d'oeuvres" in their native tongue.

I'm originally an Adelaidian... I live here now but I will never call myself a Victorian. :D I'm not a convict! Just know greatness when I see it. I moved over here when I was 10 and everytime I went to the football Hawthorn were playing so I started going for them... ANYWAYS... I think we are :o enough now lol. I wonder if I went to the Northern Territory to meet with the different aboriginal tribes to try and find out this information, would I be able to claim it on tax... hmmm
