Hi I have a pair of budgies. They are both yellow, she has white face spots and is full yellow with black eyes. He has a yellow body- I think he's pied as he has green as well. and black eyes as well. Here are some pics of them. His cere is pink- he has bred before with the person I got him from and she said he is definately male. I have yet to breed them.

S5009006.jpg?t=1212988364S5008960.jpg?t=1212988382

My hen has a sore toe so I brought her inside yesterday- so I am taking this opportunity to bring in her mate as well and see if they will breed inside in a cage instead of in the aviary. Have them in a Large cage and will introduce a nesting box in 2 weeks.

The cock is definitely a dark green recessive pied. The hen, I am just taking a stab in the dark, is a black eyed self? Lutinos are yellow with red eyes and albinos are white with red eyes :)

Thankyou- I changed the headding, I was meant to write Lutino... Well I am blonde- so that could be why I made the mistake...okay... Now I'm going to sound really blonde but I have never heard of a dark eyed self? Whats that.

Your hen could also be a double factor spangle. they look like lutinos but have black eyes with iris rings

I just had to check- But her eye's are definately black with a white iris ring.

So is she a double factor spangle or a black eyed self? I'm slowly learning the genetics stuff. It's really interesting.

What kind of baby's would they have?

Can you get a close up Macro mode photo of her eyes, they definatly look red and her pink feet are also an indicator.

They look red in the photo to me too  Are you positive they aren't a very dark plum colour, sometimes they can be so dark it's hard to tell. Can you get a close up of the side of her face?

I tried to get some close up- but alot didn't work too well. It's raining outside and the flash just wrecks the picture.

Try the macro mode setting, it's the flower on your camera. usually next to the lightning bolt, which is the flash.

From a lutino hen to a recessive pied (presuming their genes are pure)

you will get all normals split to recessive pied of the green series with all cock being split Lutino also.

But any of that could change with hidden genes, e.g. splits and masked ones

Red eyes are often the product of a camera flash. I viewed this file before I was able to post and decided that the hen was a double factor spangle not a lutino and that all her chicks would be spangles

Thanks all! I am not gifted in genetics at all!! Were really proud of our little momma. I've had her for a long tome and this is her first clutch. They are all still in a cage inside from when she had a sore toe- but that has healed up, and I can't bring myself to put her back in the outside Aviary just yet. I was amazed at the colours of the babys and the girls think their little angels... Very different to all the Dom Pied blue/white babys we have everywhere here at the moment..

I was seeing the comparison between eye colour in this photo regardless of flash....S5008999.jpg?t=1212988231

S5009012.jpg?t=1212987456

My first thought was when seeing the chicks was the hen must be DF spangle too. BUT comparing eye colour leads me to believe the eyes are red.

I guess we need a better picture of the eyes.

She is definitely a lutino and she is masking the spangle gene :)
