An Ethical Place To Buy Budgies
I would suggest that 1 of the many breeders on this forum or the many others that are not would be the best option for purchasing budgies. You can see their breeding stock and conditions under which they are bred and raised. Pet shops in my opinion may have an occasional good bird, and yes I have found some, but pet shops usually carry breeders cast off's, with no real info as to the birds heritage or breeding conditions, or as 1 does locally here buys from battery breeders in SA and refuses to buy locally.

Time has passed to quickly. The second round is under way Box 1 dark green normal hen X Light green spangle cock. Still playing box 2 pied lt grey clear-wing Hen X Grey1 Opaline cock. 1st egg Laid today Box 3 Cin-lutino? hen X Green Dk1 normal cock. Hen is a first timer. First egg was incomplete and discarded, second egg looks okay laid today Box 4 Df spangle Hen X Olive Dk2 yellow face spangle Cock. 7 eggs should start hatching in the next few days all full. Box 5 Dk1 blue normal/Violet hen X Olive Dk2 yellowface opaline/spangle cock, laid 8 eggs, 2 were damaged when cock was startled and knocked them out of the nest, of the remaining 6, 3 pinkies have hatched and remainder are full. Apart from a mistake in my behalf things seem to be ticking over nicely. Come Xmas I should have a great variety of chicks.

First Ino Chicks!
Pandapaws23 Beware misinformation. The only reason that this would happen is if the the pair are to closely related, as with other mutations. If the gene pool is diverse enough there shouldn't be a problem.

are there any stock feeds near you? if so should be able to buy there. never seen it packaged as a pressed brick before, looks expensive. 25kg Bag of steam cut lucern = Au$1.08 per kg US$1.02 per kg 24 oz package = AU$7.78 per kg US$7.33 per kg Then I guess there is postage on top.- Budgerigar Calendar Competions
Rachelm great shot- Babies Dieing In Eggs
Is the hen getting extra iodine and calcium before laying. If an iodine deficiency chicks wont have the strength so break shell. If the hen is taking to much calcium prior to laying, the shells may be to hard for the chick to break out or possibly impede the pass through of oxygen to the chick. Are the shells harder than normal? Melbourne's weather at this time could be a factor, has had high humidity strong cold winds and fluctuating temps. I did loose 4 chicks dead in shell after the hen stopped laying for 5 days and then laid these 4, I think the hen lost interest in them when they didn't hatch in the same time frame as the previous 4. My 2 cents worth.- L__J - 2013
should have said that both birds must carry the ino gene, but if the hen is not displaying Ino it is not carrying the gene as Nadene stated correctly that A hen cannot be split ino could the chick be a Df spangle? I think she meant the hen can't be split ino. but the male can. all ino's produced with this paring will be females only. So outcomes would be Normal Hen(could mean dominant pied, Opaline too or is it [sic]) + Split Ino Cock 25% Male normal 25% Male split for ino 25% Female normal 25% Female ino Would I be correct? just a note: "[sic] means that’s really how it appears in the original.”" Yes. put my head down with pen and paper and worked it out, on paper this should be correct.- Staining Above The Nostrils
Lucern is the mature form of alfalfa sprouts. I usually buy it in 25kg bags from a local stock feed. Is used as a horse food, be sure to use steam cut and the highest quality you can get. Should look a bit like chopped straw but green with a sweet smell. if it has a sour odor it isn't good enough.- My Twelve New Baby Budgies
