  1. hi robin and L__J. The perch idea makes sense will make mods to cage. Tweety has black eyes. will get some better pics of birds soon. Both tweety and tink have been sexually active with their respective partners so fingers crossed for what happens next.
  2. This is Tweety, telling Tink of for being to close to her nest box If anyone can help with Id of bird types, your input will be appreciated as this is not my strong point and have much to learn and time on my hands.
  3. This is my first effort of designing and building a breeding cage Zilla & Mary were introduced to the breeding cage this morning. Within an hour they had settled into their new home, Mary super interested in nest box Hopping in scratching around a bit like she is cleaning up. Witnessed this pair doing the Fandango so hopefully will be a success. Caught in the act, Zilla & Mary
  4. High Thought I would start a thread rather than hijack others. So at this time I have 7 birds in an outdoor aviary. 4Hens & 3 cocks. All hens are interested in breeding boxes including "Mary", grey spangle hen who is being quite disruptive and just wants all of the boxes for herself. Today I completed my first breading cage and plan to put the longest standing pair into it tomorrow. This pair will be Zilla, a cinnamon Cock and Bell a nice cobalt blue hen , these two have been dirty dancing for quite some time now. I think Mary will have to come out of the aviary and spend some time living with people. This will leave 2 pairs in the aviary Snuggles Yellow spangle? cock and Tink a pale yellow hen, and Jaws Yellow spangle? cock and Bell, a Blue pied hen. This is my first serious attempt to let my birds breed so here goes.
  5. aviary is quite quarrelsome but think they are sorting things out, I hope,
  6. made a couple of new nest boxes and put them in aviary yesterday. all activity stopped for the rest of the day. this morning the two cluckiest hens have taken up residence in the new boxes and there now doesn't seem to be to much quarrelling over real-estate. fingers crossed. am also in the process of building some breading cages so will be able to separate at least pair.
  7. Thanks Nadene. Makes sense
  8. Hi Gaby, Robyn and readers. Don't mean to hijack this thread but here I am. I am colony breading or at least trying to. I have 7 birds in colony with 4 hens and 3 cocks. The cocks have been madly running up and down the shelf in front of the nest boxes for the past 2 weeks, 2 hens in particular had taken some interest in the boxes, looking in and tentatively hopping in and out. Today all of the hens have decided that they want one box in particular, one will hop in and defend the territory with her mate standing by. Various other hens will poke their heads in, receiving a less than warm welcome. the hen will after a varying period of time exit the box and another will immediately take up residence. this goes on until they have all had a go and then will either continue the cycle or all will give it a rest have a feed or just do other budgie things and then the cycle begins. I am wondering if there may be more birds in the colony than will be safe for new mums and possible chicks. Am considering building a smaller breeding cage and thinning the colony in the aviary. Any hints ideas appreciated. Paul

Hi every one. After the demise of Henry I have been concentrating on my Aviary birds, 3 separate pairs looking like they want to lay, hens in boxes with cocks standing guard, but no eggs at this stage. Any how this post is to introduce "Ghost" he is an albino, pure white and pink eyes. Seems so far to be healthy and is becoming use to being handled and played with quite quickly.
  12. Well its been a while since I posted here. Little henry sadly didn't make it. He battled along for some time but finally succumbed to his illness. All other birds seem to be well, none showing any signs of illness over the last six months.

  14. Hi All As I am new to the world of these darling creatures and am planning to breed in the near future, does any one have advice of how to avoid the mop mutation? I am wondering if it is due to inbreeding, blood lines being to close or is there some other reason that Mops occur? I want to avoid this mutation if possible. thanks Paul ps I am aquiring breeding stock from a number of different breaders in Vic and NSW
