  1. First egg hatched picture to come
  2. Checked eggs with stethoscope, (borrowed) All eggs box 3, 5 eggs, are alive all have heart beat and all are tapping and chirping in the egg, almost ready to hatch. YEY I think that this hen must have started to sit properly at abt egg no 4, Day 8 of laying. Box 2, 7 eggs all have heart beat not yet ready to hatch, expecting hatching from these any where from the 10/8/13 to the 22/8/13. depending on when hen stated to sit properly. Box 1 now has 2 eggs still clear as to be expected at this stage Must say that stethoscope will be well worth the cost, removed any guesswork as to the health of the unhatched eggs. Abt $150.00 for good one.
  3. Still no hatching's, will wait until egg 3 box 3 is due then then may will examine un hatched eggs to see if i can what is going on here. Box 1 is now laying and 1st egg arrived today.

  5. mmmmmm still waiting, Does any one have experience with the hatchings being over due. Thinking may have lost at least one in the egg. egg 1 in box 3 was due in the 18th and egg 2 is due today. im calculating an 18 day incubation. hen was on eggs from day 1.

Made a little blunder with this description "It is impossible to get a 100% Albino cock from this pairing even if the cock is showing albino to the eye It will throw colours in its offspring. to create 100% it will take 3 breeding seasons." Correction, A normal/ino X Xa cock will not show ino as the colouring carried from the normal chromosome will overpower and hide the ino, only further breeding or dna test can confirm if split or not.
  8. No hatching's yet, all eggs are full in 2 clutches, any day now fingers crossed.
  9. re May

Hi Sherlock, if your grey hen has produced ino hen chicks and the cock bird is showing colour the ino gene can have only come from a split cock bird as hen cannot be be split/ino. So this means that which ever cock bird is the father of the ino hens must be normal split ino. The Y chromosome of the female is always constant in sex related mutations. The sex-linked varieties are opaline, cinnamon, lutino, and albino. According to Mendel's Laws of genetic inheritance. For these purpose (i) represents the ino gene carried on the X(Male) chromosome. Xi Y = ino hen, X Xi = cock Normal /ino. The ino in the cock bird will be masked by its normal gene colouring and for all intents will not look ino. (the so called hidden traits of many birds) Mendel demonstrated that the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants follows particular patterns. This work is now referred to as the laws of Mendelian inheritance and is the basis of all genetic studies. If your chicks are ino they will be totally devoid of all colour pigments including melanin and thus display only the birds base colour, (white or yellow), cere will change as per normal in a hen. A cock will display a flesh colour cere for its entire life. For male and female the legs, feet should be pink as with they eyes. .Hope this helps Paulie P.s. if you would like some "light" reading on the subject as it relates directly to budgies PM me and ill send to you.
  11. The time has come for fertile eggs to begin hatching. No1 of 5 from tink is now 19 days. Tweety has a clutch of 7 with the first due on the 10th.

A local breeder that i know is using a cock that is 10 yrs and still filling eggs with exceptional regularity.

Here is my understanding of what to expect from pairing any normal Cock with an Albino hen X X =normal Cock -- Xa Y =albino hen_ (No colour, pink eyes) X Xa=normal cock split albino 50% X Y=normal hen 50% It is impossible to get a 100% Albino cock from this pairing even if the cock is showing albino to the eye It will throw colours in its offspring. to create 100% it will take 3 breeding seasons. These are the further steps you would need to undertake if you wanted to create a pure albino line Take albino split cock from previous step to a true albino hen, completely devoid of any pigment in feathers and showing pink eyes {preferably not its mother} 2nd step X Xa / Xa Y X Xa Normal split albino Cock 25% X Y= Normal hen 25% Xa Xa= Albino cock 25% Xa Y= Albino Hen 25% 3rd step Xa Xa albino cock / Xa Y Albino hen Xa Xa Albino cock 50% Xa Y Albino hen 50% This does not take into account that the original normal cock may well be split for something that is not apparent to the eye but will show up in offspring, therefore taking more selective pairings than described here.
  14. At a guess I think you have a young sky blue normal and a pied split spangle. im still learning to id so just my 2 cents worth

  17. Tich and Donalds eggs are all stone cold, time to bin the eggs and return birds to flight. Have another pair that that have bonded in flight, mating and are defending a shelf corner. These two have now taken up residence in breeding cage 1. Hen/maiden Cock/untested

Hi robyn. have contacted the 2 local clubs in the area that are affiliated with BCV, Seems that the breeder isn't local to this area. Am joining Boarder districts and will continue inquires from there, Ring register ect. Closer exam of the ring plus inquires to date. Ring is gold not orange. 2012 BCV RR2 X2 044. So what I know is that bird was rung 2012 by a member of a club affiliated with the Budgie Council Vic, Breeders Code is RR2 and that the ring number/bird number is 044, the 44th bird rung by that breeder in 2012 season. Might seem like basic knowledge to some but we all start somewhere. Seems the deeper i get into this hobby the steeper the learning curve becomes and im loving it.

Hi all I know this question has been asked many times. What Im hoping is that someone may recognise the breeder code as I would like to make contact if possible and obtain some history on this bird as I shall use him for breading. Leg ring is orange 2012 BCV RR 2 X2 C44. I recently came across this obvious show bird in a pet shop in Wodonga Vic. The only info they could give was that the previous owner had brought him in and swapped for a smaller bird. Hears hoping Thanks Paul
  20. Well Hello there I'm Brutus
  21. Hi Nadene I have placed some crushed goose egg shell in each of the breeding boxes and seems to be popular with the male birds who are feeding it to the hens. Thanks for the reply.
  22. Hi all I have found that Titch who has 6 eggs now will only sit on 3 at any given time and not the same 3, so all of her clutch has gone cold at some point. Don't hold much hope the any will hatch from these. Tink has 5 and Tweety has 2 both are doing a great job and both are due for another egg today. Am expecting some results from these two. hopefully they will know what to do once they hatch.
  23. Hi all can anyone say with any certainty if there is any reason not to use the egg shells of chicken, duck and goose as a calcium supplement for breading birds. The idea is after cleaning out the membranes from shell to simply grind to a powdery consistency of <0.5mm and mix with egg food in the daily feeds.
