  1. Well, Today I got some new fallow budgies! A member was kind enough to gift them to me. I have been hoping for some more for a while now, but no one seem's to have them. I own a split pair, and they are on 6 fertile eggs. I will be getting 25% fallows from them. With some of the normal's also being split fallows. Unfortunately I won't be able to tell. Today I got 4 new birds, 2 visual cock birds and 2 split hens. As far as I can see, both cock birds are violets. There is a purple and blue ring, and I am unsure if they are related. Both hens are blue rings, a green hen and a blue. My plan, pray it succeed, is to put the purple rung cock bird to the green hen. The green hen, as far as I can see, is the better bird. She is also bigger in the hand. The purple rung cock bird is the smaller bird, but that is only expected considering he is young. This will give me more visuals, with the other birds being known splits. I will then put the blue rung cock bird to a normal hen I have in the aviary. I will pick my biggest normal hen. All the chicks will be split. Next season, I will have visuals from two nests, and known split's from one. I will pick my best split and my best visual, and pair them. With the remaining known splits and visuals, I will pair them up accordingly. I may try a possible split to a visual as well, as I will still get known split birds from the pairing even if the possible split isn't split. I will get some better photo's tomorrow, as I only just got them and it was dark! Blue rung cock: Purple Rung cock:
  2. that is so cute!!
  3. Thanks guys! I hope I will surprise myself as well GB! Update: Pair 2 is now on 7 eggs, one a foster from Pair 3. I will be transferring one of the most developed eggs over when I get a chance to candle them, to Pair 1 who has stopped laying at 5 eggs. Me, in all my stupidness, have not marked any eggs >.> Hen from Pair 3 (the magician who makes eggs dissepear) is still sitting, which is good. Her cock bird has completely ruined all of his feathers. I am not sure what to do. He has plucked his chest half bare in one day. This has happened once before... I am trying to remember when. It was either when he was in the breeding cage with another hen, who died (if I remember correctly) or when he went to a show. The stress of it I think. He just pulled everything out, and shredded his tails and flights. Just once, and then they grew back. I am thinking I will leave him in there, and if he must he will wait until he returns to the aviary. I don't want him to do it to any chicks though.... and the worry of him getting cold.
  4. Sounds great, be mindful that it is harder to mouseproof and possibly gain access.
  5. Thankyou both of you The cinnamon blue hen laid another egg, in the nest this time. And she hasn't eaten it yet! yess!
  6. Well, just liek everyone else, I have decided to put up a breeding journal! This year is my first REAL season into breeding. Last year I was still doing pretty colours, and a couple show pairs. I have acquired more breeding cages as well. Right now, I have my first 6 cages down. I am getting another set of 4 sometime in the next couple of days as well! I am really looking forward to the chicks I am going to be getting this season. It would have been a few weeks ago now, I put down 2 pairs. Pair 1: Opaline Sky Blue/Fallow hen X DF Violet/Fallow Cock (Blue and Black Ring) Really keen on this pair. They had eggs, never been fertile past season. I am happy to say they are on 5 eggs (I think the hen has stopped laying now...) and they are starting to go pearly white First egg layed Thursday 21st. Pair 2: Opaline Sky Blue Cinnamon (Parents: light green cinnamon/blue X light green opaline cinnamon/blue cock) X Yf Sky Blue/ TCB (Blue and Green( I think...) Ring) I will be mindful some of the cocks will be split TCB, not ideal. I am really trying to get YF Sky into my flock. This is a first time mum, and very proud to say she is one of my own! She isn't much visually, her dad was incredibly good though. They are on 5 eggs of their own, plus on foster egg (I will explain later) They also started laying on the 21st. I then put another 3 pairs down. Pair 3: YF Sky Cinnamon Cock X Sky Cinnamon Hen (Red and Black Ring) Another pairing for the YF Sky's. The cock is a Steve Jaffer bird, and the hen is 50% Jaffer. So a blood pairing as well, one of my first's. The hen laid one egg off the perch, which I stupidly put into my other yf sky cinnamon clutch. I should have put it in the fallow nest. But, I then realised that unless the cock bird from pair 1 is split cinnamon (which i am fair sure he isn't) then I will know if it is there chick. The hen also laid a second egg the next day, on the floor again. I put it in her nest box, as she goes in there. It has mysteriously disappeared however, not something I am to happy about..... Pair 4: Opaline Grey-Green Clearbody Hen (Parents: Violet Opaline TCB Hen X Grey-Green Opaline Clearbody Cock) X Sky Blue TCB Cock ( Blue and Black Ring) This hen's mother is also mentioned further down. I am very excited on all my clearbody pairing's, but once again especially this hen as she is one I bred myself. I love the amount of suffusion on the hen, and the cock's isn't the worst I have seen! Pair 5: Light Green Cock X Opaline Spangle Dark Green/Blue Hen (Blue and Blue Ring) very,Very excited on the pair! The hen is one of my best birds, and still only a blue ringer. Both untried. They are currently on 4 eggs, the 4th being laid today. The hen is a bit skittish and wanted her eggs back. So the picture is a bit funny, so I included one from when she was about 4 months old. The cock has very good width across the head, in bone as well as feather. Sorry the pictures aren't great! (better one of cock and hen from pair 3) And this pair I only put down last week on Saturday. The cock bird is borrowed from a breeder, he show's his clearbodies at national level. Pair 6: Opaline Sky Blue/Clearbody Cock X Violet Opaline TCB Hen (Purple and Blue Ring) The clearbody hen from pair 4's father is also a bird I had from the breeder. This cock bird is only on loan though. He is a flipping purple ringer as well! He is the longest bird I have ever seen. The hen is also a very nice bird, but has somewhat deteriorated since I bred here, which I think comes form being a young bird when I bred her. She has the genetics in her though. She looks tiny compared to the cock. No eggs as off yet obviously. Sheer length of the bird Head touches top of cage, tail touches floor. Hope you enjoyed, will keep you updated!
  7. I use half pigeon mix and half small parrot mix. Soak this overnight, drain every 12 hours. By day 3 it has begun to sprout. I just go that from my local fodder store.
  8. Budgies do not produce salivia, so the acids ( or chilli) have nothing to react to and produce heat/sourness etc.
  9. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=23594&st=0 Look at the tables here and you should be able to work out the mutations. Otherwise be patient and I am sure someone will answer you.
  10. I cannot find were the video is?
  11. I don't have any concave's.... would a tissuebox or ice-cream container of some sort be okay? Here is a picture of the cage:
  12. Putting another box in won't fix it I don't think. The cage is the smallest of my breeding cages, and has an inbuilt box. I don't particularly like the style of it... but I don't have anything better to use. Would putter a peice of wood in the place she is chewing the paper help?
  13. Well, it was only the other day I put a round of birds down to breed. One of these pair's is a highly anticipated mating, as it will very hopefully produce my first ever fallow chicks. I only own two split birds, a hen and a cock, so I cannot change the pairing around at all. The hen is in perfect condition as far as I can see. She lay two eggs in the aviary, and was digging a hole in the ground and being quite protective of her little nest. I have tried to breed these birds once before, and I am having the same problem as I did last time. The hen has been in the breeding cage for 3 days now. She gave me one egg on the floor, on the first day. She is completely comfortable in the box, and went straight in when I first put her in there. But, even though she goes in the nest, she has been spending alot of time outside. She sits in the corner of the cage, and chews at the newspaper. She has completely torn half a sheet, and is very mischievous when she hides under it. I was considering using shavings, but I don't want to encourage her to lay on the floor. Last time I bred them, the same thing happened. I don't know what to do. The hen has never had chicks before. Any Ideas?
  14. From my experience, that is certainly an opaline clearbody. I have quite a few, and also have normals. This is an opaline clearbody . If both chicks are clearbodies, then that means that they are both hens.
  15. Just curious, would you be able to get some pictures of the darker ones wings? The first chick is a TCB for sure, and the second one may be as well?
  16. 1. The breeder who I got the bird's from is just getting into TCB now, this is his first year. I would assume he will get from an TCB cock bird X a ECB hen, would be Any cock birds being ECB or normals, split TCB equal amount of TCB's and ECB 2. As far as I can see from the internet, it is a dominant mutation. However, I am not sure about that, I have not asked the breeder much. 3. Not Sure 4. Yes. 5. Still not sure, I think they are more common then first thought, but I don't think as common as TCB's. I tried to answer you as best as I can, and to what little knowledge I have. I only learned about this the other day, so much of it is information I have read up on, and guessing.
  17. I have known of the easley for a while now, but I never suspected I would have them, as I, like you, assumed we didn't have them in Oz. However after a discussion today about the clearbody hen's I had in the show today, a breeder assured me both hens were from easley birds. Their father was from this breeder, and the father of them was an Easley. The breeder is in the national's with his clearbodies (the father came from the line, so the line is easley lines). He bought 2 Easley hens a few years ago, from an interstate breeder, and all of his clearbodies go back to these hens. I am still trying to distinguish the difference, but he mentioned how the bird's marking are quite darker then a TCB, and the body is alot easier to see the clearness through it. In the below picture I added, the brother to these two hens is on the top. Their mother is below. You can see the difference in suffusion, the mum being a good bird, but the son being a better bird. I am hoping to visit the breeder in a few weeks, and will certainly be looking at getting some easley's to put back to these siblings. The violet cock is a splay leg chick though, but a nice bird. You can see his uplift and blow, which means that his sister is carrying it I am hoping. So the pair I originally posted may throw some round headed chicks, even though they are both flatter. I am hoping the violet cok will breed still. His legs aren't that bad.
  18. Hi everyone Here are some pictures of my new birds I get today. Today was the annual Ron Norman show & Brasea show , was a very exciting day! I won two 1'st and one 2nd. I bought one bird from the auction, and got another 3 birds off forum member Sunnie, (who sold some very nice birds in the auction!) stunning birds that she was VERY kind enough to practically give them away to me.I was looking for some big beefy birds to put into my stock, to get the size up as I am reasonably happy with my birds feature wise. I got some great advice from some very helpful members, and was bidding on a stunning HUGE albino hen, but she went for over $100, which i refused to spend on a bird! I got: -- Light Green Normal cock bird, masking YF and split blue ($50 in the auction) who is S. Cripps and B. Hunt lines. Very happy with him. Blue ring I think. -- Cinnamon Light Blue Hen, Fantastic mum! Green ring -- YF Blue Cock Bird split TCB -- TCB Sky Blue Cock bird - Stunning bird, with the loveliest head I have seen! I have been very naughty, and these new birds are in with two hens. I am planning to put these three following pairs down in my first round, in about 6 weeks. Plus a split fallow pair, and maybe another YF Blue pair, and a ino/clearbody pair. Here are my following pairs, I am hoping to really get some nice chicks out. These three birds are in my show aviary (birds for upcoming show's being prepped) but now that this is the last show I am in for a while, I emptied it out, and am going to hopefully let the birds pair into the RIGHT pairs, knowing them though, this will not happen! Pair 1 Light Green Cock mask YF /Blue X Cinnamon Light Blue Hen. I love his width of head and directional feather. Pair 2 YF Blue Cock /TCB X Cinnamon Opaline Sky Blue hen (No picture of them together sorry! These are horrid pictures by the way!) Pair 3 Sky Blue TCB Cock X Easley Clearbody Opaline Grey-Green Hen. The cock is a very nice bird, I am thinking I will try the cock over the two sisters, and an albino hen I have. The two sisters (the bird in this pair winning first between her and her sister today) are very much the same, the other bird has a clearer blow and a more round head, but this hen sit's nicer on the perch and is neater. She has a very nice outline, and sits quietly. She also must have violet in her, dad was a grey-green and mum was a DF violet . I will be interested to see how the chicks come out, as far as the texas clearbody and the easley clearbody mix
  19. The catalogue is found on the club site. Looks like it will be a good day. If you open the document, Auction List, You will see the birds available. I already have my eye on a few! http://www.bssainc.org.au/downloadable-forms.html
  20. Nice birds! Sue is a very kind lady, I hope she treated you well The birds are very good. If I was you, I would pair the Grey Cinnamon Hen to the Grey-Green Cock, and the Green Hen to the Grey Cock.
  21. Unfortunately , this bird passed this afternoon. It's horrible. I truly, in all honesty, thought he was getting better. He was still inside, with seed and hulled oats (and sunflower seed's), and kept warm. He was more active. I have another bird I took out a few days after him, who wasn't so bad. He also had done a week of dosage. All of my aviary birds are fine, and these two bird's inside were both chirping to each other, nice and active. I was monitoring the budgie's weight, and it started decreasing on Thursday. I don't have a clue what happened, but it went from 38 back down to 35 in the space of 4 days. He started to spasm and twitch, and within 10 minutes was gone this late afternoon. I am very carefully monitoring the bird above him, to make sure he doesn't have a rapid decrease. On a slightly more positive note, what does everyone think of this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HERBS-HORSES-1kg-Seaweed-Meal-Kelp-/220766823470?pt=AU_Horse_Riding_Equipment&hash=item3366ba642e
  22. No, Not encourage, But just offer information and support . Even though Pop's hasn't replied for a while, hopefully some of the information we are giving him may be helping. Even if the change isn't immediate, maybe one day these little birdies will lead a safer life.
  23. Personally, I think that some of you are actually being very rude. Even though we are only typing in words, simple courtesy should still be held. Saying that if you ever met Pop's in face, you would slap them, thinking that this is a joke or a troll, saying everything is his fault, it is all incredibly rude. Saying " The sheer stupidity, ignorance and enviromental vandalism"..... No one here cannot tell me that this is not rude. How would you like it if you made a simple decision, about an animal you are none too knowledgeable about, to be virtually , slapped across the face at the sheer rudeness of some. Pop's came on here, asking a simple question, trying to learn more. This is a budgie forum, were you ask questions and give help to people that don't have the same amount of information as others! I have followed the progress of this thread, and it has got quite out of hand I think. I am sure that Pop's understands that what he is doing is potentially harming to the two birds. Yes, It was wrong to let a captive-bred budgie free. I am sure that Pop's understand's that. How does anyone here even know that Gladiator is a captive bred budgie? her parent's could have been escaped feral birds for all we know. As Kaz mentioned at the start of the thread, She has quite possibly evolved further, so that she knows how to cope with enemy birds and know's how to survive. I am sure that Pop's has been scolded enough, maybe we should all just try and offer our support for him, Gladiator and Pretty Boy.

That is a very good aviary! I wish I could find one like that when I was looking, I am happy with mine but it doesn't have a safety door :/ I paid $280 for mine, but it was quite a bit bigger I think. Good luck with your aviary!
  25. Just thought I would mention the cock bird wasn't euthanased. He received a week of treatment. At the end, he had but on 7 grams (32 grams --> 39g ) after the second week, I took the medicated water out, and he had lost 3 grams (now 36g). I have been giving him oats to get him up, and he chirps when he hears other birds. I have treated all the birds with coccivet.
