More Scaley Face
GB and Kaz you are both 100% right, I know he made a profit out of me and he's $60 bucks richer for me being a mug but I couldn't just leave her.....this produce shop in question only sells grains and farm stuff a few chooks and sometimes the odd budgie or tiel.... I have done some research this afternoon and I've found a place that sells my brand of seed and hubby can pick up when required as its near his work, I think it's best that I never go anywhere that may sell budgies, other than a breeder, ever again... I have emailed my local council and attached a photo, explaining my disgust at this establishment and asking them where I send my formal letter of complaint. Anyway.... I've done what I've done and I just need to focus on getting her better to live the rest of her life as best she can...

More Scaley Face
Thanks Kaz and Dave for your input....I'm very concerned about the hen at the moment as well, she is not eating much, I'm going to heat up some egg and biscuit and see if she'll take it....I will update soon as to whether the beak is split or just badly deformed, or as Dave said if the mites are holding it together.....can I maybe scrape the beak gently with something ????? Thanks Rachelm, but I lost the last hen I tried to save so I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much... She is in a very bad state, but I will try my best and keep you updated....

More Scaley Face
Well I had to get more seed yesterday and I vowed I would NOT look at the budgies.... Couldn't help myself....in a cage were these two with a sign... "English $40 each", a staff member came back from putting my seed in the boot and I told him they both had scaley face really bad, I said i'll take them off your hands for free... He had to get the mannager, he comes over saying..."what one has scaley face"?...I'm getting pretty mad as blind freddy could see they had it... and trying to calm down there were other people in the store so I said quite loudly " you so can't sell these budgies they have bad scaley face"... his relpy was...."it's not that bad I'm not giving them away, you can have both for $60" and stormed off, I got the assistant to put them in a box and I bought them, told the manager on my way out quite loudly I would not be back I'll get my seed elsewhere.... So I have 2 budgies with scaley face again.... If you look closely at this girl her beak seems to be split? It was late when I bought them home, all I did was invomec them, and put them in the cage so I'll have a good look this morning..... http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu74/an...pg?t=1280607623 There feet are really bad....

Hi LisaM and welcome to the site... Please take the time to read older posts on what is likely to happen when you colony breed....there is heaps of info on here.- Is Marmaduke Actually Mammaduke?
boy- 4 Chicks With Sore Legs?
So the CALCIVET and the SOLUVITE D can go in the water together, twice a week, only a few weeks before breeding and while raising chicks? Or twice a week all the time?- 4 Chicks With Sore Legs?
"Rickets'' Is basically the inability of the bird to matabolise and absorbe the minerals in the body, Vitamin D is the key as without this the bird cannot take in the calcium it is receiving . Make sure the mineral additive you put in the water has Vitamin D . Also dont overdose as this can cause more harm than good. Two Days in the water is usually enough. Thanks for explaining Matt.- 4 Chicks With Sore Legs?
Thanks Kaz, Sorry I have not replied I have no internet til the 25th so I'm at my sisters place.... Thanks for anwering, I will order both of those tonight. What it "rickets" please??- Grey Opaline Hen X ?
Awwww.....great work GB!!- 4 Chicks With Sore Legs?
Hi everyone.... I would like a bit of feedback on why this may be happening to me? I have had 24 chicks this season and 4 of them all from different nests have had some sort of leg/foot injury. One was euthanized at the vets...(it was broken) 2 came good after about 4 weeks in the hospital cage and 1 is still recovering......the vet said the other 3 were not broken injured in some way and all he did to them was give them a vitamin injection told me to seperate them in a seperate cage with heat, whitch I had already done with 2 of them, the other one wasn't weaned properly so I left that one with the parents for 2 more weeks and he seems fine now.... I don't give my birds extra calcium meds only from the food I supply. Every 7 days they get a mixture of the below every 2/3 days... * corn cobs * Broccoli * egg and biscuit * Cucumber * Beetroot * peas * bread * apple * banana * oranges * mineral blocks are in the avairy(I dont use cuttlefish) Should I be giving extra calcium to my birds? Should I be doing more prior to breeding next time? Not sure if this is the reason, maybe just bad luck...- Baby With A Bad Foot!
Jodie.....if he is not eating you need to feed him A.S.A.P, or get him to an avain vet for a crop feed... I have recently hand raised an orphan budgie that was a bit younger than your one....mine was not fully feathered..... I made a feeding spoon from a teaspoon...just bashed it with a hammer, or just use a normal spoon for now.....Do you have some egg and biscuit, baby rice cereal..? It needs to be quite warm or he may not take it, mix it up and put it on the spoon and feed him... Put some millet and seed in the cage, he should be eating a little bit on his own..... Good luck!- Baby With A Bad Foot!
Hi Jodie, I know how you feel.....I have had excactly the same thing happen to two of my babies this year. One I decided to get euthanized at the vet as he got worse, he got to the stage after 2 days that he was lying most of the day on his side, the other one came good after 2 weeks..... I put them inside in a small cage with only 1 low perch with a constant heat lamp..(although they were not "sick" I think it may help with pain?), water and food on the bottom of the cage..... Give it a few days and see how he goes...Good luck and keep us posted...- The Story Of "orphie"
Funny you say that GB, she actually text me to see if he made it...once I said he was doing fine she asked if she could buy him back.... I ended up ringing her and explaining that my sis was very attached to him and would be devastated if she had to hand him over......she was fine about it thank goodness....And thanks everyone for your kind words, but anyone that loves budgies would do the same.....he has the sweetest little chatter sound....gives beautiful kisses...... and very cute I think it was his calling to end up being hand raised!!I will take a picture next time he comes to visit,,,,- The Story Of "orphie"
Hi everyone.... My mobile phone rings at 11.30pm Friday night 5 weeks ago, it's a lady on the phone crying, after I calm down (I have no idea at this point what the *** is going on!) and she calms down she proceded to tell me she had 2 baby budgies, 1 baby had died and so had mum and dad, from a crow/magpie or some large bird attacking the cage earlier that night.... She had 1 baby left and knew nothing about hand raising....(nor did I really), she asked if I could take the baby, she had seen my add selling some baby budgies in the local rag....I agreed... She arrived at my place at 1am in the morning freezing cold, with a shoe box with this tiny little treasure inside, he had not been fed for hours and had been through a lot, I had some egg and biscuit here thank goodness which I made up and heated it up nice and warm and he ate with gutso!!, I put him in a sock of hubbies and he came to bed with us and slept peacefully til morning....we named him "Orphie".... I got some hand rearing mix from the produce store the next day, and he came along in leaps and bounds, as I work full time I didn't want to leave him alone all day without feeds so my sister came twice throughout the day to feed him... He has turned out to be the sweetest budgie ever....my sister got so attached to him we decided it was better for him to live with her :budgiedance: as she is home every day, he came to see me last night...snuggled under the hood of her jumper... Here is a picture of our little Orphie....- Kindie Cage Babies
Im glad not only my birds do this ......... !!!!- New Baby
Thanks Everyone...... I am leaning towards this bird being female but would not like to say 100% just yet.... I also got a beautiful df spangle from this pairing.....- New Baby
A bit confused with the mutation of this baby.... Mum Dad Baby....At this stage it is a very pale blue with no seen markings on wings, a few very faint bars on cap and light purple cheek patches? Just a poorly marked opaline spangle?- Breeding Cage And Avairy Cleaning
WOW!!!! Is the coffee cup full Kaz !! I will never complain about cleaning again ............................. And I will put a thicker layer of paper so I just need to take off the top sheet..........- Breeding Cage And Avairy Cleaning
I was just wondering how you all clean and maintain your breeding cabinets/Avairy's? How do you breeders with lots of birds cope with the daily jobs? Every day I do water and seed/millet/soft food/paper change in breeding cabinets, Every other day I do seed top up and water change/veg in avairy.... Every saturday morning I take all food containers out and wash them, vacuum avairy and breeding cabinets then disentfect and hose down, I only have a small set up compared to some of you and it can take me hours.... It must take you guys the whole day!!- Leg Exercises
