  1. We all go down that path when we start out 'trying' to breed something! But it's fun, anyway! And now I have four other "goal" mutations to mix together, so just about all of my purchased birds will be able to contribute. (I must admit that though I was looking for "breeding stock" with certain mutations, a couple were bought just because I liked something about the particular bird.)
  2. You should put a caption with this. It looks like they are having a conversation!
  3. He looks boy to me, Grant.
  4. Kaz, see what happens when you take a day off from the forum?!
  5. and not all split recessives carry the spot anyway...some do and some dont. Great, I hope Finnie doesn't mess up the whole thing by throwing a recessive pied gene in! Do I spy a greywing?! YF skyblue greywing?............. Very cute and I can almost feel the excitement from here!!!! Sh*t sorry missed a page again!!!!! You obviously covered the greywing thing last page Nubbly, you are so funny! The ironic part is that a yf2 skyblue greywing was my first original goal, until I found one (Kelly) in the petstore. I was originally going to pair Colleen, the mother of this chick with a skyblue greywing male to get a yf2/greywing, and then pair that up with Finnie, to hopefully make this chick, and here he is popping out first when I least expected it, from Sean! I didn't need all those extra birds after all!
  6. That's like one of those optical illusions! Now I'm going to have to go back there and see If I can make my eyes see the cat face!
  7. Ratzy, do you not have any porridge oats in the house? You can also put in a cupful of seed. That gives the mom something to eat while she's sitting there. I just think you're going to have a mess with newspaper.
  8. I'm not good at telling pieds, either, but I thnk you have it all right, GB.
  9. So here is what I figured I would get from this pair. Patrick is dark green (now we know he's split to blue) dom pied (or Renee, you are saying he's a clearflight pied/ dom pied combo) black barred wings (which we now know he is split to some type of greywing, cuz there are greywing chicks in the clutch.) Finnie is a cobalt or violet greywing normal. So, the chicks can be: Green/blue or just blue. Any dark factor. (They can get 0 or 1 from Patrick, and same from Finnie) Remember the table, they can be 25% 0 factor, 50% 1 factors, or 25% 2 factors. They can have black wing bars and be split for greywing, or they can just be greywing. Now for the pieds. They will just get normal from Finnie. They will get either the dom pied gene from Pat, or the Clearflight Pied gene. (Assuming he is a combo.) If he is just single factor clearflight pied, then he could pass on a normal gene, but we will assume not for now. So the chicks will be 50% dom pied/normal, and 50% clearflight pied/normal I was not surprised to see that Patrick was split for blue, but I was surprised to see that he is split for greywing. Now, I am hoping that he is also split for opaline, and, fingers crossed, there is a chick whose down seems lighter than the others. (By the way, I am learning to tell the difference, it seems that even grey down starts out light, and then darkens a little.) So if this light chick stays light, then I could have an opaline hen! (I think she's going to be blue series, because I'm not seeing any yellow pin feathers on her.) I know you guys want pictures. They are coming. It takes a long time to upload to photobucket, and then to figure out which ones to keep or delete. I am planning to do a cere study, coming soon. I just wanted to put this in about Patrick's genetics while it seemed appropriate.
  10. Not necessarily all chicks will be Dominant Pied, if paired to a hen carrying recessive variety genes then the Dommie Pied will 'dominate' but if you pair to a dominant variety, such as a Normal, then your odds are more 50:50. Who is Pat paired to? He's paired to Finnie, who is normal, with no pied spot.
  11. That is so cool! Don't you just love budgies? :hap:
  12. I think that the only way to know if he's split to cinnamon is if he throws cinnamon hen chicks. I guess you'll have to wait and see what you get. That is the fun part :hap:
  13. You are right. I think we've overlooked her.
  14. I've thought of another way to get your birds to try something different. My birds LOVE mustard greens. The leaves can be quite large. Hang some from the top of the cage, and see if your budgie doesn't at least give them a nibble after a while. If he learns to eat them, then try hanging other similar stuff from the same spot. He may be more likely to try new things once he realizes how good the hanging stuff up there is. You can grow mustard green from seed, and even this late, they will grow through fall. Hard frost didn't kill mine, just a really solid freeze did. They put out pretty yellow flowers, too! :hap:
  15. A head patch on a spangle is commonly seen and on a spangle does not necessarily mean split for recessive pied The spangle often has a head spot on the back of its head and that is due to its dominant pied inheritance going way back into the first spangles bred using dominant pieds to acchieve spangles . This must be why we started discussing recessive pied for some reason. Because I went back to look at Dad at the beginning of this thread, and he is just normal looking. Unless he has a pied spot on the back of his head, then I'm with Kaz, here. These spots are Spangle head spots. It doesn't seem as though mom or dad has any recessive pied to throw into the mix.
  16. Top photo shows three birds.........................The way I read it is Splat is referring to the one at the top behind the other two I see her as talking about two differing birds as there is. When she is tired and its late Splat doesnt word herself very well Oops. Yes, on reading it again, I see that she didn't mean "and it is the same bird as the one above, right?" Whether Splat's wording is tired, or my early morning reading is tired, either way, I misread! :hap:
  17. resting after laying her egg most likely although some do incubate soonish she may not be. Didnt I tell you to stop checking her ??!! :hap: I'm not. You can see from the house, though she can't see me. She started to incubate when the first egg was laid and last night she was in there the whole night. How is it that you can see into the nest box? Can we see a photo of it, so we can get a better idea? Also, I was told that if there was no concave, I would need to add more nesting materials. I didn't want to disturb the eggs, so (during my normal daily checking time) I put a heap of oatmeal in the box, not over the eggs, but nearby. By the next day, the hen had trampled them around, and all was fine without my bothering the eggs. Oh, and another thought. Since you are writing things down and keeping good records, when the first chick hatches, you can count back 18 days to get a rough idea of the time she started incubating. It does seem that my hens were incubating from the first egg. But don't forget that the 18 days is not set in stone. It could vary due to heat and other conditions, and some chicks can hatch early and some late. But it's something you can check on once one hatches.
  18. Well, I hate to be a party pooper, but I think the two I've highlighted in green below are two different birds, if you look closely at their positons, and the albino in between them Agree with Splat One slight problem This one http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx347/c...dgies/Sting.jpg Needs to come and live with me :hap:
  19. No. Oh GB! That's terrible! ...Have you ever let your cat inside your house only to find half an hour later that it wasn't your cat, but one that looked almost identical? (We did think he was acting weird! :hap: )
  20. Yes, I'd say Patrick is a Green series Clearflighted Dommie Pied, in the blue series the clear flights are completely white :hap: So that means that all of his chicks will have one or the other pied, right? I have noticed that they all seem pied, but different markings. I've never really seen a clearflighted pied, (other than Pat's combo) so it will be interesting to see the differences in the chicks as they feather out more! Oh, and one of them is blue series, so Patrick is definitely split to blue!
  21. They sure do! Seems like January 3rd was just yesterday! :laughter:
  22. Oh! That's terrible that your whippets don't get to do lure coursing! I've heard that they absolutely LOVE it! Yeah, earthdog is for going to ground. I believe it's only for terriers, but dachshunds are allowed, too. They dig a tunnel maze thingy and put a rat in a cage at the end, and the dogs are supposed to tunnel down and find the rat, and then bark to signal. Some people claim it's cruel to terrify the rats, but they are in a cage, and they don't get hurt. By all means, use Weasle Teaser! I myself have borrowed it from the book 'Never Tease A Weasel' by Jean Conder Soule, printed in 1964. My mom always read it to us when we were little, and now my family has a copy.
  23. I agree with everyone else, we need full pictures. But I think the second picture shows some opaline in the v area of the back. It's barely visible, so I'm waiting for other pics with baited breath, because I think he may be opaline. My guess on gender is male, and I like Mortimer better than Vovo, so I'm glad to see by your siggy that you seem to have decided on Mortimer!
  24. Thank you, Nubbly. Yes, it's hard to imagine any dog going down a badger den and challenging them! I am going to make her registered name Tail's End's Weasel Teaser. I think weasels would be more her size! :laughter: I'm hoping to do obedience and earth dog trials with her.
  25. Please explain finnie :laughter: Nubbly's got this one:
