A Winning Day
Thanks guys. When they won best Spangle cock and hen (novice) that was enough for me. I rang Trish and said "Put a bottle of Sparkling in the fridge, we are Celebrating tonight" but then they went up against each other for best spangle (novice) I rang and asked if we have two bottles  . Then he went up against all the other cocks and won I rang and said " Put two bottles in the fridge" She laughed. The strangest feeling, I was sooooo nervous when he was being judged. But when he was on the front bench being judged for the top positions, I was no longer nervous. David Ganzer came up and was so excited and asked why I wasn't. I was happy just to get Best Spangle Cock and Hen (novice) all the rest was a dream win. But to be awarded Champion Young Bird of Show... It was like I had made it and all the work over the past few weeks had paid off. The nerves were gone and the euphoria was there. It is a great feeling. The Show team is in the stock cage winding down. It's a bit like Elvis was before he died. I build the team up for the show and then bring them down. Unlike Elvis, I don't use drugs but good food. They got plenty of hi carbs in the water, Protein in a small dish. vegitables and rest for a few days alone before going back to the flights. As for me, it's 7:30am and my head hurts a bit from the Sparkling last night. :ausb:

My First Show Results
Congratulations! Feathers, it's a great feeling isn't it. :ausb: and some very encouraging words from Robd. Now the best thing to do is to pester the guys in the open and intermediate divisions on showing you the correct way to prepare the birds. You will find that they will be more than willing to show you.

Leg Band Colour?
The "-" can be replaced by triangles and other markings. The ANBC do this at the last minute so no one can copy the rings.

French Molt Confusion
French Moult is generally aggreed to be a virus. As most Viruses are contagious this will cause you problems. As you have them in the quarantine cage with the bush budgies I would say that depending on the bush budgies age, they may catch it. If you introduce the bush budgies or the new birds into the flight with the others I wouldn’t consider breeding until 2008 or at all. The new birds might grow their tails and flights but will probably be carriers. If you try to breed with them you might only spread the virus to other birds. Some breeders will risk it and try to breed but mostly will produce runners.

Err, I'm Stuck
Karen you have spangles (of a sort) so I have to agree with Cheeta. he is a double factor spangle. That hen I got from you in 2005 is a spangle dominant pied cinnamon skyblue. "Jazz". She has breed melanistic and dominant pieds. What was the parents of that birds? That hen behind the pied, have a very close look at the wing markings. It could also be a spangle cinnamon skyblue. The cinnamon will lighten the body colour but it also could have a dilute gene in there too. Mr Handsome is.... Do you have a hen with a deep mask also to go with him? Possibly a grey?

Scaley Face
You can use it on their beaks, I do, but you must be careful not to get it in their nostrals.

Scaley Face
Baby Oil.... But good quality. I noticed a Melinistic cock with a mild case of scaly face. He had it on his beak and feet. It had gotten under his ring and cause blood flow to the foot to be restricted. I applied Scaley Face medication from Aritopets. (spl?) and worked the ring loose on the leg. This was on Wednesday. Yesterday his foot was still swollen and I applied the medication again. It is a 4 day treatment. Yesterday (Thursday) a top breeder came over to help me get my birds ready for this Sundays show and we discussed the birds. One of which was the Melinistic. He inspected the bird, asks what I was doing and told me to get some Baby oil. I always keep some in the aviary. He applied and massaged it in. With in a few moments the scale started to come away. Even from under the ring. We dug all the scale away with a feather quill. This morning the foot was looking great and the scale was just about gone. I gave the birds some more baby oil and massaged it in. Apparently the oil sooths the area and loosens up the scale. It also smothers the mites so they can’t breath. I have followed up with cleaning the cages and spraying AIL.

Trying To Breed Some Violets:
The sire would be split to Opaline for the cock to be opaline itself. He is a Opaline Skyblue don't know about cinnamon (colour on my sceen it's not brown) could be grey wing. She could be violet. Now depending on what gene she is carring the violet fact will give different results. Here is the topic I did on the violet Gene.

Hi Tracey, I'm on the other side of the big city. Warner is west of Strathpine. Just north of Brisbane. All the best with the birds and aviary.

Nest Boxes:
May I add a few things. It is very important to check the nest box daily. I do it twice a day. Once in the morning and the other in the afternoon. But don't constantly check the box. If you are constaintly checking, the egg might go cold or addled as the hen is frightened from the nest, or the chicks might not be fed properly. Also here are two links to 18 day calendars. 18 Day Calendar (Normal Year) & 18 Day Calendar (Leap year) both are excel Sheet Sheets.

Do I Have Too?
I have sold birds for $0. I am about to donate 10 Birds to the old peoples homes. On the other hand I have bought birds for $120.00au and currently thinking of buying a bird on a private sale for just under $300.00au. The last main auction I have been to four birds were sold for over $3,000.00au each. I breed for show, for quality not for qantity. I haven't sold a bird for money in nearly 6 months.. I am currently registered with the Local Council as a professional breeder and do it for the pleasure not the money.

Yellow Face Type 1 & 2:
Budgies go through two moults before they get their adult plumage. That is why you have to wait to see what they are going to be like.

Poop Stuck To Chicks Legs
I hate it when it gets stuck to the ring. It can really build up.

Can Anyone Tell Me What Color He Is Called?
Mauve is a double factor dark factor in the blue series. You have skyblue, cobalt and mauve. Very nice bird

About Worming And Atibiotics
I have heard that use of antibiotics and some medications causes temporary infertility for at least a season. If the birds are ill it is better to lose a season than a good bird.
-
Yellow Face Type 1 & 2:
Paul the parents look like type II from the photo. Mum looks like a Spangle Opaline Greywing or Cinamon. Photo is a bit too small. The cock looks like a cobalt, I can see the green tinge. The chicks look like type I but one is a Opaline visual violet. That could mean the cock is a violet skyblue and split to opaline. You'll have to wait till the final moult around 8 months old.

My History.
I know a member here (daz) has an older male that after a few tries was able to fill eggs when he was put on sparks. (I think that was what was used) SShhh Nerwen you are letting all my secrets out.. Norm try vetafarm Sparks It got my Cinnamon Grey Cock back into life. I also use it to bring my Show team into condition for a show.
-
Yellow Face Type 1 & 2:
Type I is a normal yellowface. Type II usually the yellow bleeds into the body colour, it is also called a Parblue. If you have a Yellowface Blue then you will see green in the body colour for a type II. There is also a golden face which the yellow is more buttercup in colour.

About Worming And Atibiotics
You must becareful with any medication given to the birds while breeding. The dose is for an average bird in what they drink during the day. Breeding pairs, especially the hen drinks more during breeding and this can lead to overdosing. If there isn't a dose for breeding pairs you can ask a vet or contact the manufacturer. Vetafarm is happy to discuss dosing their products over the phone.
