  1. You can get a feeding spoon from a pet store. I use a crop needle but if you've never done it don't try it. Try the millet first and see how he goes.
  2. 5 weeks is very young to be away from the parents. I don't separate them until 6 weeks and then to a nursery with other chicks. If there are no chicks in the nursery, I'll keep them longer with the parents until I can have a few go in. The other thing is to pout an old cock bird in that will take the role as a feeder until they get going. My chicks stay in the nursery until they are 3 months old and then to a junior flight. You may need to hand feed this one until he gets the idea of feeding himself.
  3. Rain also means breeding. The Australian wet season is from Spring to Summer. This is the time that they mate. Rain is one of the triggers that start this. As Kaz said, it is the sign that food will be available.
  4. 1) What is the best preferred time to serve fresh food (vegetables and greens), whether morning or evening? I would feed the vegetables in the afternoon while it is cooling. This will give a better chance for the birds to eat before the food goes off 2) Whether all the vegetables and greens can be served raw or we need to cook before serving? raw is always better 3) What all vegetables, greens and fruits that can be served I serve carrots, celery, mung bean sprouted, snow peas sprouted, corn, oranges, aleo vera, spinach, gum leaves 4) Also when we serve fresh foods, whether we should also serve seed mix together or only one at a time, since I have seen when we have both fresh food and seed mix, my birds usually prefer seeds over fresh food. birds will eat what they are used to. It might take time for them to adjust. I always have seed available all the times. 5) Is it necessary that everyday birds feed should have smashed hard boiled egg with egg shell along with fresh food and seed mix or once in a week is okay, what is the best recommended for all type of birds (i.e. young, breeding and hens feeding babies) Egg food or food high in protein is essential for growing chicks and bird going through moult. I feed my breeding pairs on a high protein soft food every day that they are breeding. I also feed the chicks up till they are 6 months old.
  5. The budgerigar will attach at the back of the head. It will either put it's beak into the brain or scalp the other bird. I have had the male scalp hie eldest son. It is not a pretty site.
  6. A very good idea thank you and welcome to our forum

You can winnow it for your birds. But only once a week.
  8. How young is the bird? I would have millet sprays on the bottom of the cage. You can put the father to son in the same cage. But keep an eye on them.
  9. Rain fall triggers the basic breeding instincts of the birds. Rain mean grasses will seed and that means food for the chicks. So the birds go straight into breeding mode. Humidity means the eggs don't dry out, but the driest month had one of the highest hatch rate. The records show that 280 eggs were laid in the last 12 months. out of 42 pairs. 142 were in fertile (1/2). 14 where Dead in shell, 15 where dead babies, 74 survived and there were 35 "Other" Other takes in adled, broken and eaten. The spread sheet shows more chicks hatched as I only started taking these records from half way through the year.
  10. Here is an on line book that is very very good. The Master Breeder. It will help you understand breeding and maintenance of a flock. There are no purple budgies, but there is violet. To breed violets you need a visual violet. Paired to a cobalt you will get violets. Violets are very hard to breed. As their genetic make up is not quite known untill you test breed them. Here is an article I did on the violet factor. I hope it helps.
  11. Budgerigars sometimes can't recognize there own young. A cock bird can see his son as an intruder and will kill him. Same with the hen and daughter. I have what I call my BBBBBs. bruised and Battered Baby Budgie Boxes. I place these in the breeding cage just before the chicks start to come out of the nest box. If the parents attack, they can run to shelter in one of the boxes. While in the box, the parents still feed the chicks.
  12. I have been keeping a record nearly every day over a year of the conditions in the aviary to get an idea of the best times to breed. Well after nearly a year or records... I can't work it out. The Year Recordes. This is done in a spread sheet with in Dependant monthly and daily records. This is the from sheet with the general readings.

Hi all. Got around to taking a few quick shots. It's 34 deg C out side and 33 deg C inside the aviary. Some of the birds have gone to the floor to try to get cool. The rest are up on the perches. I'll try to take some more as it cools down.

Very Good topic. Most animals are inbreed / line breed. Horses, Cattle, goats, pigs..... Show Breeding of any animals involve this form of breeding. What you can enhance can be good and bad. The golden rule is never, never pair two animals with the same fault. All you will do is to "fix" the fault in the line and then it's hard to get out.

Budgerigars are all individuals they will pick to eat what they like and toss the rest out. Some breeders feed their birds seed in different feeders. I feed mine a mixture of Canary, White French, Jap millet, red panicum and hulled oats. I mix the Canary, white French, Jap millet and Red Panicum in to a 20 litre container to hold until I need it. The Hulled oats I feed to the breeders with chicks in a separate feeder. I also add it to my soft food. If you feed them in separate feeders you'll need 5 feeders per flight

Yellowface Skyblue Hen but very young. Did you get her from the pet store or a breeder?

Daz you never told me there was a petty cash jar :hap: you are so right the rewards are endless and priceless D'oh.... Sorry but there is no cash in it .. only stars
  18. Daz replied to Elly's topic in Off Topic Chatter
There is a saying that no body does anything for nothing... This I agree totally with it. I get the satisfaction of working with some great people. That means everything to me. :glare: Thank you all. Elly very good idea and long over due. Well Done. Take 2 gold stars out of petty cash, you deserve it.
  19. You can use him to a Spangle, Normal, Opaline.
  20. I place mine in a training cage first to see what their reactions to each other is. Some time if they start fighting straight away, it's not good to continue. If they get along, great they go in to the breeding cage.
  21. I have had a clutch of 4 and one gets it.... I don't know but it is frustrating. I had two over Christmas but they grew there feathers back. I have two at the moment. I experience 1 in ten last year with it. For months I got none and thought I'd gotten rid of it.
  22. I have to agree with Norm. After continuing this discussion with an open show breeder, he agrees that it could be a genetic disorder but nothing more, and certainly not life threatening.

Most Egg and Biscuit mix is too high in biscuit and not enough egg. It's best to make your own as Elly said. Also great recipes girls.
  24. Ikon you are on the right track. I hope you do well.
  25. This ring issue fascinates me. ANBC doesn't allow the year in full. eg 08 there is a symble instead of the first number In 2006 they used an arrow instead of 06 it's >6. This year it's a X so instead of 08 it's X8. They do this to stop people cheating and having false rings made before time. Kaz check your rings they should be the same. I think these are private rings. We take of 06 rings and we write them that way eg PR-235-06 or PR-06-235 or with out the - but that is not whats on the ring. As yours has 94 I believe that it's not a proper ring. 1994 was a Blue ring not gold. Too many questions in my mind on that ring being correct.. But the bird is not that old. I agree with Kaz. 2 to 3 years old .
