Hi I Am New To This Forum
Hi Laraine and welcome I sex my birds at 21 days. As a rule the females will have nostral rings as the males will be uniform colour. This is not always correct but as a high percentage it works. As stated above you will get an idea over time. All budgies as Australian but the term English is refer to show birds. This is used outside Australia. In Australia we have Show types and Pet types.

Weird Looking Feathers....
Did you get both from the same place? If so you might find that Goldie is imuned to it. I seem to get FM chicks at this time of year. They do grow out of it. They aslo make great pets because they can't fly for some time Until their flights and tails grow back so can be easily trained during that time. I rung 100 chicks last year 50 cocks & 45 hens. 5 died after ringing so don't know what they were. Out of which I had 4 Dusters and 11 french moult. Every french moult regrew there feathers, except for one. He had to be one of my best show birds.. oh well. The 10 that regrew there feathers, you can't tell they had FM. They are with other birds that are not affected. I believe in building up an immune to it. I spray my breeding room every day with F10ss (Avian disinfectant). I clean the breeding cages every Saturday and spray with AIL (Avian Insecticide). It comes around this timeof year, I think it's the humid conditions.. FM is one of many diseases that the vets can't control. They like to call it a breeding disease because it usually only effects the chicks and young. Their way around it is to tell you to stop breeding for 12months so that the birds can build an immunity to it. I can have a clutch of 4 chicks and only one will get it.. why??? Hopefully one day they will find a cure and wel can cross that one off our list.

he might do okay at novice level. His stance is excellent, mask could be deeper and the wing marking clearer. A few weeks in a holding cage would put some weight on. I would pair to a blue normal, opaline or spangle hen. The hen would have to have good clean wing definition good mask and good shoulders. Very stocky. When he is breed condition he will be interested in the hens. Breeding is coming to an end at the moment. So you might get some clear eggs from him. But you can try him.

Weird Looking Feathers....
I have doubts that your vet is correct. I agree that the birds is not a Duster. Dusters rarely live longer that 3 months. I also don't believe that the condition will shorten the birds life. I believe that the bird has a touch of Polyomavirus. French Moult. This condition causes in the worst case causes all feathering to fall out and in very light cases the feathering to curl. It is usually seen in about 4 to 6 eeks of age but can occur in older birds that haven't been exposed to it before. The curl some time goes when the bird goes through a moult. It is not a conditon that in light cases causes the bird to have a reduced life span and it certainly not caused by over breeding. We believe that it is cause by either the virus Polyomavirus or a mite/bacteria that infests the feather folical. To check for this condition a DNA test is sent to South Africa, we don't do it here. It cast $100 au. If you show us a photo I or Kaz can confirm this. The other posibility is Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) but both are common with younger birds and not a young adult. PBFD is fatal most times but is detected at time that the chick is developing it's first feathers. a 5 month old bird has gone through it's first moult. It will have two more befoire it aquires it's adult plumage. I would ask you vet for a clinical findings. Ask what the disorder/desease is and let us know.

http://home.gil.com.au/~dwellsadsl/prbsinc...ing_colours.gif Ring Colours in Australia. Australian Breeders rings under the ANBC arte always Club, breeder, year, bird no. . My Rings are club PR Breeder 1W year -8 bird no. 016 His ring could be a private ring not associated to a Club. You might fine 94 is the bird no. BSSA is not the Budgerigar Society of South Australia. The Governing body in SA is the BCSA http://www.bcsa.com.au/ You could try them to see if they know the breeder or help with the bird. It is a very good example of a Spangle. +++ I've just had a good look at that ring. It looks like a 2006 ring. Can you give it a good clean and see if you've missed some lettering? +++

Spangle grey cock. Very Very Nice too. Hate to tell you but he's only 3 1/2 years old. The ring should be a 2004 ring not 1994. It will be blue but if it is a 94 he is very very very great condition for a 14 year old bird

I wouldn't give the Cock or hen vegitables Until the youngest chick is three weeks old. Protien is the building blocks of life and boiled eggs are the easiest why t give it to them. Boil an egg for 20mins. let it cool down slowly. Mash it up shell and all and add one grated carrot. (blender is great for this) give half in the morning early and the other half at night. You can spinach as well to give iron. Egg and biscuit mix you buy is mostly biscuit. but can be used with the egg. *** I also merged the topics for you.. You only need to click reply to add to this topic.***

Hi and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your chicks. As the cock is a skyblue split to ???? and one of the chicks is a light green Cock you could get a range of colours and mutations. That chick will be split to blue. A lot of cocks are split to opaline or cinnamon and to find this out, watch the hens he has. This will give an indication. Test Pairings over time will give you some indication to his back ground. The hen appears to be a cinnamon from that front shot but photos can be deceiving. Do you have any other photos of the cock and hen. Especially their backs.

Tufted Budgies.
Crested or tuffed budgerigars are usually not as large as a normal. Having said that I relate to the Show Birds. A good show variety will be as large as a good pet bird.

Our Newest Additions
Interesting because the pairing of DF Spangle to Normal is 100% SF Spangle. A dominant pied can be used as a normal but has a dominant gene. Yellowface is also a dominant gene in the blue series. You would think that the Dominant genes of the Pied crossed with the spangle would give 50% SF Spangles and 50% SF Spangle Dominat pieds. 50% of which would be yellow face. But you have a normal in that yellow face. Isn't genetics wonderfull....

Hope this topic give some one some good ideas.

Is This Behaviour Normal Or Strange?
Budgies eat their own droppings. It is a way from them to get potassium. So long as their food isn't contaminated they will be fine eating it.

Hi Everyone

Budgies Eyes
Some people get confussed because they see a bird and the discription does match exactly what the book says. Genetics are perfect but over a large number of birds and nature is not always right. It makes mistakes, that is why we have so many beautiful budgies.

Got to agree with Kaz she is younger than 3 months. I think Grey Green cause the cheek patches look grey to me. Is that correct?

My Birds Toe Is Caught In His Leg Band.
It's great that you have got his toe freed, Hope those that are ringing their birds are careful not to forget that last toe has to be brought out.

You have a yellowface sky blue cock and a yellowface cobalt cock. Very pretty birds. Your green hen, I think, isn't green it looks like a yellowface type II skyblue. The body coloring has been altered due to the yellowface. Kaz has better eyes than me, what do you think Kaz? Also you have a very special bird there. It's an Australian Pied Opaliune Skyblue Hen. Very rare. I was speaking to an open breeder the other day about domnant pieds, He won last years Nationals with one, and he told me that the Australian Dominant pied is a rare bird these days. Very had to breed them so there are not many around. I breed Dutch Dominant Pieds.

Worming Budgies Question
I like the cage but would put the perches across not long ways. That way he has some distance to "fligh"
