One problem with sealing the aviary is that you can't hose it out. I just cleaned and scrubbed and disinfected mine. Luckily I had a wet vac to get rid of the water. If I every rebuild it (and I probibly will) I will have new ideas for the next one..
  4. I'd start with the DPI (Department of Primary Industry) or the Environment. As the bird flue is still a scare in Europe, it may be very difficult to do.
  5. Well we still have a way to go but we are getting there.
  6. Go team go.
  7. ... Budgies and a Hearse... Sounds like an old 70s movie.
  8. We are now 43.... Getting through the pack to the top where we belong.
  9. oh I don't know, I think we are all mad I have to agree though, i love lessoning to others opinions and ideas and why they do things.
  10. I agree with DrNat. We look to see what we need to get what we want. eg I want good normal hens and good Spangle Hens. So I am going to pair a Spangle / Opaline cock to an Spangle Opaline Hen. Out come will be Normal Cocks, Opaline Cocks, Opaline Hens and Normal Hens. The normals will be both Normal and Spangle. What do you want?

  13. Well I Have some bad news. We have just joined the best bird site and our ranking is currently low. about 85. Not bad since we have only been on for a couple of days. We need a lot of people to click on the link at the bottom of the page and vote for us. To raise our rankings. What do you think. Are we worth it.
  14. Mine is a mess. Feathers every where. That is why I vacuum every second day.
  15. Well wonce breeding season starts the aviary fills up quickly.
  16. A good rule of thumb is to set them when they are ready. When they are in condition. I start to check this around the winter solstice. December 21-22 Solstice is Winter in Northern Hemisphere Winter solstice in 2008 from Australian time zones will be on 21 June

I keep a rat trap outside the aviary. It is the possum trap stile. It does the trick. 7 rats last year. I haven't caught a rat for a long time but still keep it baited.
  18. If I thought the breeding cages would come up that good i'd have painted them long a go. The set up looks great Derek. You must be itching to get the pairing started.

I fly both sexes together during the off breeding season. I segregate the previous year to older year. Eg the 2007 birds are separated so that I can see the possible birds for the nationals. This is how they are at the moment. but I will change that in a months time and segregate the hens and cocks for the start of the breeding season.
  22. Opaline Cock to a Cinnamon Hen will give all Opaline Hens. and Cocks that will be split Opaline and Cinnamon.
  23. I'd say he has polyomivirus which has effected his flight feathers. I have a Hen bird like that. She is a good mother and doesn't seem to pass it on.
  24. Double factor Melanistic. Wing markings.
