The Budgerigar Program
Jimmy I run both The Budgerigar Program 2006 and Bird Tracker. I like both but have a tendancy towards The Budgerigar Program. Ultamately the best program would be to merge the best points from both programs togeather.

Buying Budgies With Tags.
Jimmy when I started I didn't know the difference between a dilute and a recessive pied.

Can You Judge This Budgie For Me?
I can only go by the photos: Mask is short and the spots are under developed. The Bird is long flighted and carries the wings high instead of resting on the rump. It has good width above the cere but needs some more frontal. Its beak is tucked in well and has good back skull. It is a solid bird and would do well to be paired to a longer bird with a deep mask, good spots, a good frontal and better wing carrage. Looking at the colour of the cere I would have said it's a young cock but could be my screen.

Words Of Wisdom
Some words of Wisdom from Bill Gates. Subject: Re: Bill Gate's Rules for teenagers 1 doc INTERESTING!!!!!! This should be posted in all schools and work places. Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try de-lousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. If you agree, pass it on. If you can read this - Thank a teacher! If you can read this in English - Thank a soldier!! ....and guess what... he is right.

Opinions Please
Well at 4 1/2 weeks she shows a lot of features. She is developing width across the cere, good directional feathering above the eye, depth of mask and she seems to like to throw her frontal. I would advise train her to continue that. At this stage you should be giving plenty of Protien for feather develoment. Kaz can help you with that.

Opinions Please
It has some potential but seems to be too young. It would be interesting to see it develop of the next two weeks. How old is this chick?

What Does It Take To Show A Bird.
The Baby powder is used on blue or grey series birds to whiten the cap feathering. No good on the yellow faces or green series birds.
-
Colour Depth & Brightness
Think of greys the same as green and blues. Grey is a factor that effects the colour in the birds. Grey factor to a green with produce a grey green. Grey to a blue will product a grey bird. Greens and blue both come in three colours Sky Cobalt and Muave. Light green, Dark Green and Olive. The grey factor acting on these colour will product the three colours of grey. Light, Dark and very Dark. (Yes it has a name like Architive or something. ) Violet like grey is also a factor. It effects the colours in green and blue. What we call a violet is in fact a violet cobalt. A violet sky looks like a cobalt.

Ringing Question
This year the rings for 2009 will be available in the middle of December. You can ring the chicks from then. The new 2010 rings will be available from the 1st September 2009. So any bird that is hatched after 1st September 2009 will have a 2010 ring on it's leg.
-
Ringing Question
Generally that is how it is done. But some clubs have special awards for birds. In our club we have a derby system in that your first 10 rings are the derby rings and they are placed on the chiks that you hope will do well. It is a bit like a lotto. So ring 1 could go on the first bred and ring 10 could go on a bird hatch 4 months latter.

Update
The 8th Bird is a 6 week old Spangle. This is the correct wing marking of the Spangle. It has been lost over time by bad breeding and I want to bring it back. The 9th Bird is a Yellow face grey. Just the photo showes him as a violet mauve.

Current Project
Thanks Kaz.The main Idea is to keep the chicks in the nest box longer. The Chicks are forced feed (protien) by the cock mostly at 4 weeks of age and it is this that I want to happen more of and longer. If the boxes are deeper and bigger the Chicks will stay longer.

Update

Do I Need Wood Shaving In My Nest Boxes?
It doesn't matter to start with. Most of the hens throw it out before laying. I add a hand full to give them something to do but don't really worry until the chicks hatch. Then it's good to soak up the droppings.
