  1. It was always drummed into me measure twice cut once. I have a habit of remeasuring until I am sure it will work. I have learnt a few things from the first one which will help with the next few. Don't put the back on until all the rails. dividers and guides are done. It help with clamping from both front and back.
  2. Well I put the breeding cages into the breeding room tonight. A big difference from the exisitng ones. All I need know is the trays. But I know have room to start the next cabinet. By Sunday I should have finished the first 8 cages.

Budgies love roast chicken. Especially the breast meat. It's good protein too.

If it's Calcivite from Vetafarm Directions: Mix 20mL in each litre of drinking water or pour 5mL over a cup of soaked seed. Individual bird dose is 0.2mL per 100g body weight.
  5. Yes the boxes are deeper from the access hole to the nest box floor. The chicks stay in longer. Hense they are feed more by the parents than if they were out in the cage. I f mine millet sprays in the nest box from the age of 3 weeks to get them used to cracking seed before they leave the nest.

Calcium supply is good but the body can't properly use it unless it has vitamin D. Usually the calcium supplements have vitamin D included. If you are only using cuttlefish you also need to supply Vitamin D. Cod Liver Oil on their seed is good for this.
  7. Would only use her as a foster or for pet birds. Not for show birds.

I use shell grit even though you will find my posts here saying not to. I have converted to mineralised fine shell grit. I am also trying a new meat meal called pig weaner. It high in protein and the birds can't get enough.... I will be worried if they start grunting .
  9. Also the chicks will stay longer in the nest getting force feed by the parents. This gived them a better start with feather productions. Update (no Photo) The first set is nearly finished. The only thing left is the trays. So this one will be going out to the breeding room to make way for the next one. I can put the trays in when there are ready.
  10. He can be masking spangle but not be split for it.

Very Nice Birds Neat. I like the opalines.
  13. Yes we do show cages as well.
  14. Up Date time. I did a bit more to night. Got the perches in and glued the bottom strip for the dividers. The divider guide is glued in with liquid nails construction grade. It is good enough to hold a mirror to a wall. The Tape is to hold it down while it cures. Rounded 19mm square perches. 16mm round perches. These are screwed from the back. It is a bit of a pain to change them but they won't be moving under the hen at the wrong time. Bird eye view from inside. All that has to be done is the top rails and the trays and this one is off to the breeding room.
  15. Just don't over do it.
  16. Great read.. it good to get as much information as possible.

Looking good Derek. The birds look like they are settling in.
  18. .... Normals and dominants should have grey feet but there is a lot that are having pink feet. This was pointed out to me at the last show. Double factor spangles with out iris rings.. This is another abnormality.. and frustrating on the bench became its a penalty.
  19. A double factor looks like a recessive pied but with Irus Rings. Also the beak and feet is normal colour. Grey
  20. Budgies are green and yellow.... it was an error in genetics that gave us all these varieties.. Here is one for every one. What is the colour of a Normal Budgies' feet? Add dominant varieties in that group too. When you look up the answer go and see if your bird has the righ colour feet. Many of you will say it doesn't.
  21. Dazza :hap: ... like it Any timber is fine as long as it's not treated and is structurally strong enough for the job. 12mm external ply is good.
  22. If you have a bird with two recessive genes it is a recessive. As in a clearwing, Grey wing, Recessive pied, dilute, Black Eyed Clear. A Dark Eyed Clear has two recessive genes...... but it also carries a dominant gene. If you pair a Dark Eyed Clear to a Normal you will get Continental Clear Flighted pieds which is a dominant variety and normals. Both will be split recessive pied. Now is the Dark Eyed Clear a true recessive variety? That is the interesting part. I am interested in what others think.

I have been using this as a base and it does seem to work well.
  24. Yes young birds as young as 7 or 8 weeks old are shown in a "Nest Feather" show. The training starts as soon as they go into the nursery. Some people attach a show cage at the end on the nursery and put food and water in it to encourage the nest feathers to get accustomed to the show cage.
  25. Yes over doing it will cause a condition know as vitamisation. It's not good for the birds. Suppliers should supply a matrix of what can be mixed. Vetafarm does this on their website. http://www.vetafarm.com.au
