Breeding Cages
The first Breeding cage I used / built was to have the nest box outside. The box is "Clipped" on to the side of the box. The two in the Photos slide in and out of the front. The one that Hath discribbed is my preferance but where I am forced to breed they would get knocked all the time. No good for the hen or chicks.

Breeding Cages
The nest boxes are on little wire shelves. You can hinge up the wire door and slide the next box out. If you pull it half way out the wire hinge acts like a lid. So you can look in to the box with out the birds flying away. Being Summer I have removed the wooden lids to help keep it cool. In the photo the hinged door is behind the breeding card. Left on the left one and right on the right one. At the moment they will be kept in there until the chicks fledge. But I have plans for a special Aviary toe keep the Cages and so that they can be let out for flying time. I am just waiting for the designs to be priced.

Breeding Cages
I was lucky to pick up a dual breeding cage through the week and would like other peoples opinion. Just for those that are trying to find / make a cage. Width is 580mm each section (living area not outside area) Height is 405mm Depth is 370mm The Breeding Boxes are 140mm depth x 140mm width x 180mm long. The boxes can be inspected while the mother and chicks are in the box. The Breeding cages and boxes are made from Ply not MDF. Both sections have separate removable trays to allow for cleaning. I have newspaper on the bottom which is cleaned every second day. ................................................................................ .................. Both Cages are supplied with the following: Fresh Seed Fresh Vegetables Egg and Biscuit mix Cuttle Bone Iodine and Calcium Bells. Millet Fresh Water. * The Seed is checked and old husks are removed and the seed is replenished every day. * The Fresh Vegetable in put in in the mornings and removed at lunch time. * The water is replaced daily. Old water is used on the plants.

Thats where I got my Dual Breeding Cage. Gary there is also a breeder and knows what is good. I made sure that the breeding Cage and Boxes didn't have any MDF. Here is a photo. The Top box I built. THe front came from Pet City.

Why Wont They Leave The Nest
I'd also keep an eye on the chicks just incase the parent do get a bit rough when they think it's time for the chick to go.

1st Chick
I got to agree nerwen the cages at Lawnton needs a good cleaning out. I wont be buying any birds there. I would rather travel to Mt Gravatt. Pet City is a lot cleaner. Heres the link to the site. >Pet City< Plus I'm a member and get the discounts.

1st Chick

1st Chick
*falls to floor in shock* Wow its gone up!! was this for their 'pied' budgies, the normals or 'tame' budges They had a mixed cage of Pieds babies I think from memory. What Pet City is Selling for $25.00. I think I'd go to Mt Gravatt rathr than pay the big dollars at Lawnton.

Thanks Lin. you are right, with all the worry they will be staying with me. The parents have been great. Pity about losing the 2nd chick though. But as we know, there is no guarantees in life.

The oldest is Chirpy and is destined to come inside with George and Angel. The other is called Tiny and will be joining Razzle with the flock. Just to mentioned I dropped in to Aussie Pets at Lawnton......$40.00 for a budgie I wonder what they are paying breeders?

Help! I Think Hen Has Stopped Feeding Chicks
Your two new males should have been put in quarantine. :wine four weeks to 30 days is the recommended time. You can never be sure what illnesses new birds will bring into your flock. You could lose all your birds. Here is one experience of such an event. >Quarantine< I currently have 9 budgies. One of which is in Quarantine for another two & half weeks. It is alway better to be sure than very sorry. Hope everything goes okay.
