Bea I hope you went over the floor with a magnet to pick up those little bits of metal. Budgies will pick them up and if swollowed they will get metal posioning.....

Lettice is full of water and gives them the runs but in moderation it's okay. Try grating the carrot and mixing it with the celery. Snow pea sprouts and mung bean sprouts are good. If you can get endive it is very good. high in vitamins and minerals. Bannans and blueberries don't know. Broccoli is good.

Actually you are right but thye wrong way around. Greeny is the cinamon wing green and duey is the recessive pied. The chicks should be green split to recessive pied split to cinamon. But I don't know the parents. There could be through backs.....this is exciting. Any one got names?? oh I checked the two eggs still there. Both are clear.

I total agree. It is a lot of work and responcibility also the housing question. Do you have the room. It takes me a half an hour each morning just to give fresh water, clean food. Then you have all the costs of fresh vegatables, medication, seed. Treats. Vet bills. Proper breeding cages for closed breeding. My dual breeding box was $135.00au. The aviary (that I built) cost $500.00au. Housing for the chicks after fledging and before going to the aviary $ 350.00au. I think if you are going to do it right put $1000.00au aside to spend in the 1st year. Return on chicks $10.00au unless sold privately then maybe $15.00au. If you are going to do it professionally and breed high class show birds. Multiply costs by 5 - 10. Hath would know better than me though.

If that is the only way you can afford another pair you shouldn't be breeding. You said your mother is paying for the expenses? Have her buy another pair rather than breeding and then selling birds. What happens if something goes wrong? The cost of vet care is going to be WAY more than a pair of budgies. It makes very little sense. Breeding just so you have babies to sell just so you can buy more birds...?? wow and a big wow eterri, I would expect a very high percentage the the forum would disagree with you on this one. There is many here that breed bird to sell or to show. If you are showing birds then you have to lok at selling the ones that don't come up to stratch. I am selling mine and so do many others. But that doesn't mean we are not responcible in what we do. ....... Oh and yes you are right the vet costs decrease the income. I just spent $55.00 on Bluey because he was sick and it was well worth it. Let me note though that I don't sell for profit. Just to cover costs. Thats a big multiplication. You have to have room for the chicks when they fledge. This is my spare cage. If your mother doesn't ant any more birds, you may end up with a lot in a hurry. You have to consider this. The mother may not feed your baby first off. Can you do 2 hour feeding for as long as it takes the mother to get it right. My last clutch, the mother didn't feed the baby properly it took all day. I was lucky. These are thing to think about before you breed. If you are thinking about getting another male to quickly breed with. Remember he will need to be in Quarantine for 30 to 45 days before for breed. Just incase he hasn't got anything wrong with him.

Depending on how active he is, Change his diet to a canary mix and offer him. a mixture of endive, snow pea sprouts, sprouted seed like mung bean, cut up cellery, cut up carot. He will love you for ever. ....and he will be healthier.

You will have no problems doubling that, just remember how you will get in and out. Some so called expertes say that 4 inches of perch is enough for a budgie. So to them add up the totall length of perches and devide by 4 inches or 100mm. I perfer a lot more area for my birds. I wouldn't put more that 10 pairs in my aviary. 2200mm x 750mm x 950mm

Hi Aaron, The best age to breed budgies are from 12 months old. If you have just gotten the female , it's best to have her quarentined for 30 to 45 days. You wont know if she is caring a desease until it's too late. You don't want your male geting it. Before you attempt to breed make sure you read up as much as you can and ask as many questions as you want. This is the way to knowledge. Well the truth be know is that all budgies except for the original wild or bush budgie is a mutation and have been breed that way. All I am saying is that not all mutations have been inbred. But as I said I do aggree that the inbreeding has caused weaknesses. I am also saying that some breeding has improved the species. These are general comments.

yes but is that article correct. What is the case studies from birds housed in cages that have been preped this way. :dbb1: I cleaned my wire with water and vinagur, than dried and coated it in a non toxic paint to seal it. As eterri say - can't be too sure. :ausb:
