well there has been no traces of coccidiosis found in the poop samples from last night that i took to the vets this morning :bliss: . started treatment for cankers on the rest of the flock this morning , no more sick birds and im hoping thats how it stays

got it thanks neat , that was much easier to understand than some of the info i found else where on the net . reading those links i expect the cocci would be treated with priority then the cankers . still no more sick birds , YET ! but the vet cant open early enough for me tomorrow

thanks cara , ive had a few live as long as 7 years + , and that was before i knew they needed more than just budgie seed mix to survive . ive had a shocking October so far , 3 of my budgie hens "disappeared" , ive lost 2 of my favourite birds to disease , my 17 year old dog had to be put down too , as well as my 17 year old cat last month . bring on November i say !

not really neat only that it can be passed by birds feeding each other , i plan to do some research later when i get some free time , any links or shortcuts would be appreciated

i just spoke to the avian vet and looks like jack had canker in his respiratory tract and lesions in his bowels consistent with coccsidiosis . possibly passed on from a previously quarantined bird who was a carrier without being infected the speed with which it killed both george and jack who had been separated for about 2 months now makes me think it wasnt passed between the 2 of them . so now im off to drop off stool samples from the rest of my flock to the vet . these diseases cant be treated simultaneously and can be hard to be completely rid of . at least now i know whats going on so can take some positive action and hopefully prevent any more very upsetting losses

Best Food For A Single Mum ?
time for an update of the situation . the 3rd egg has hatched afew days ago now so there are 3 happy little chicks and betty seems to be coping pretty well with the soft foods :sadsorry: . so here are some pics of them today the oldest one looks to be dom pied as its getting the patch on the back of the head , they seem to stack up every time open the box with the smallest being protected by the middle one ,then the biggest covering both smaller ones

Hello :)
im sure i saw on here somewhere a quarantine you could start following immediately . i think kaz started the topic , could you post the link kaz ? it would require you to buy some medications to treat both birds so you might have to put off buying another cage if the budget doesnt allow for both . im sure youve got the message that quarantine is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE for members on this forum . if you are getting grief now its only because experienced people ( im not one of the experienced ones)on here know how much worse it feels to lose a companion bird and they wouldnt wish that on anyone . if you were nearby me i would give you a cage to use .

Baby Budgie Milestones
just what ive been looking for kaz , thanks very much . now i finally have something to compare my babies against .

Hello :)
this is one of the diseases that could be introduced to your lonely bird by not quarantining . better to have a lonely bird for another month than to have 2 sick birds or worse , NO? ive lost 2 of my birds this week , and i cant help think i was careless with my hygiene after visiting a breeder who had just a "few" sick birds . for example my birds looked fine one day and were gone the next and there is nothing i can do to bring them back !just because you dont see any sick birds doesnt guarantee there are none . good luck with your choice not to quarantine , i hope you get lucky . by the way your birds are gorgeous . i would agree the new one is cobalt spangle

just thought i would give an update on jack(offspring of george) too , he passed away on the way to the vet yesterday after having shown signs of improvement . waiting now for the autopsy to be performed so that i can treat the rest of my flock if necessary . the rest of the birds are showing no signs of illness at this point .

Best Food For A Single Mum ?
betty is getting stuck into the soaked seeds and both chicks have full crops so fingers crossed things will keep going like this . though she seems to be a bit stressed that george is gone. i added millet and soft wild oats to the nest box also and she seems to be eating those too

R.i.p George
thanks for all your help today i really appreciate it neat, and thanks to everyone else for the kind words . i will keep posted on what happens

R.i.p George
hmmmm betty and the two chicks look fine , they both have full crops and she has been eating the soaked seed like its going out of fashion which is about the only thing that has gone right since this morning . jack is still not looking too good in the hospital cage though , not interested in eating or drinking and hasnt moved from in front of the heat lamp . i reckon i will be going to the avian vet in town first thing in the morning if he doesnt improve . and even if he does i will be taking him on monday anyway . all the others look fine too .

thanks chrissy im not sure what happened to george . i came out this morning and he just looked to have fallen asleep siiting in his bath . my wife said he wasnt very active yesterday so he may have been feeling a little unwell . he didnt go into the nest box with betty and the chicks last night either which was out of the normal . i think he was around the four year old mark

Best Food For A Single Mum ?
thanks liv thats very helpful . should i be putting the fresh food into the nest box or just outside ? as she doesnt come out now unless i open up to inspect the eggs and chicks . is it best to mix the egg biscuit mix with the soaked seed ?

Best Food For A Single Mum ?
hi , ive been reading a couple of threads about single mums raising chicks and was wondering besides millet in the nest box what else can i do to help betty raise her 2 chicks alone ? i have put fresh water right next to the nest box but not sure if there is anything else i need to do . there are 2 eggs still to hatch in the nest box , one due today the next on saturday but now should i be hoping they wont hatch ? the chicks are 4 and 9 days old and looks like mum has fed them this morning already .

R.i.p George
george passed away during the night . i knew something was wrong as soon as i opened the sliding door and did not receive my normal greeting from him . he was asleep sitting in his water bowl and looks to have gone peacefully . i will miss his curious and friendly nature and knowing he is irreplaceable . he leaves behind betty and 2 young chicks in the nest box

Red Belly Black Snakes
red belly snakes can climb though not really well and a big one probably wouldnt have too much trouble scaling your old bbq or your patio avairy for a feed , and you can also find eastern browns in the same areas as red belly and black snakes . dont mean to alarm you NEAT .
-
Red Belly Black Snakes
yep this is the time of year they literally come out of the woodwork in great numbers . my parents are having issues at the moment with them to around their stables . one even got delivered with the horse feed last year which was a shock as i was the one packing it away and suddenly mr black snake came out right under my feet . if your dog is anything like my terriers ( they have small dog syndrome !) and will think a snake is a fair target so you need to keep a really good eye on it . we always used to "relocate" them ourselves but i dont reccommend it . children and pets welfare always comes first for me
