  1. simply adorable little violet boy :happy-dancing: and a good catch too !
  2. JB , sorry the only instuctions the vet gave me was how much to mix with the water and how long to treat for . 3 mls/litre made fresh daily for 3 days . in future i think i will just not give them fresh veges during treatments to be on the safe side . thanks for the good advice as usual
  3. i was giving them the medications in the water and theyve gone off the soft foods since i started the treatment . i hadnt thought of the fact they would possibly get enough water from the fresh veges and therefore not drink the dosed water
  4. hi all , ive just got to ask is it okay to give my birds fresh veges whilst treating them with antibiotics ? i ask only because my budgies have gone off the fresh sprouts and grated carrots since i started their baycox treatment for cocci . ive also been catching them to dose them with meds a bit lately and changed a few birds to different cages so im hoping they are just sulking a bit , and taking a bit of time to settle back down again . they used to hoe in but now its going barely touched at all

  10. hi I've been hand rearing my only surviving chick for 10 days now . it is now 27 days old and doing well . what i would like to know is when do i start weaning from handrearing mix to seed :star: . i have added millet to the nest box and cage and sprinkled around some seed too . but the chick seems to be happy with an EASY feed from the syringe and not very interested in getting its own food at the moment . i did read the faqs about weaning but didn't really answer my questions . thanks in advance .
  11. they are grotty little things , i wouldn't be going through the bin either to finish it off either ! good call not to leave it there for the birds to play with . i don't know if they would actually eat it though or would they ? ringnecks are great too very characterful and they're on my list of birds to get

personally i don't use baits outdoors , too many toxins get passed onto predatory birds and the like causing a flow on effect . my dogs are little ratters too so i wouldn't want them eating a poisoned vermin . i use traps slightly different to kaz's but the same principle . for those smart mice that can take bait without setting spring type traps i use raw bacon rind as its harder to get off . they pull on it then smack its all over :sadsorry:
  13. thanks elly , looks like the crop can hold quite alot . i dont fill up the crop quite that much on my 19 day old chick but not far from it .
  14. tonight i lost chick #2 , to be fair the odds wernt good for it . it was weak and not feeding very well but i gave it a fighting chance anyway . chick #1 has affectionately been named bitey , is feeding superbly and getting stronger and bigger by the day . the bites are starting to get some real nip in them so thats a good sign isnt it ? might go to 4 hourly feeds tomorrow as it will be 19 days old . thanks elly the handrearing information in the faq were really good , except is there a guide to how much my chick should be taking each feed ? im sure bitey would eat til its crop burst

kaz im in wollongong , about an hour south of sydney . if anyone is willing to foster them id be willing to drive them to sydney if it meant there chance of survivng would be better . theyve taken to the formula pretty well and they are nice and warm in the hospital cage for the time being . yeah neat im treating all my birds for cankers at the moment as a precaution even though i dont have any other sick ones , have been since tuesday when i got jacks autopsy results .
  17. well if your thinking punk MB , you would be hard pressed not to call one cyndy ( lauper ) lol . cant wait to see crested baby pics

kaz im hoping to manage the chicks myself as i dont have anywhere to foster them anyhow . i bought some hand rearing formula and ive fed it to them them 3 times today without too much trouble . they wernt kept warm last night so the youngest chick died from the cold snap i think . the other 2 are okay at the moment( 15 and 10 days old ) , everything is crossed but im not very optimistic about both surviving . heat lamp is on to keep them warm and im feeding them every 3 hours

october should be called something else like s***tober .apart from jack my other 2 birds that died came out of my breeding cage , which jack was moved from 8 weeks ago . my 2 patio cages are 180 cm x 75cm x 55 cm ,have pitched roofs , have slide out trays and grate on the cage floor ( the same as the cage bars ) to stop the birds playing in their own mess . the trays are cleaned twice weekly , the water dishes daily ,the seed dishes every few days and the perches removed and scrubbed weekly . i believe the breeding stress probably caused george and betty to be more susceptible to the cankers they were already carrying . i know now to treat for cankers several weeks prior to breeding . the rest of my flock are being treated for cankers since tuesday and once this is finished i will treat all of them as though they are in quarantine . im very tempted to catch each one tomorrow morning and give them a precautioary dose of ivomec

betty died in my hands this evening after a short struggle with cankers . i took her to the vet this morning along with her 2 of her 3 chicks which she had been raising alone since her partner passed last thursday . she had been unable to cope with the stress of being single . the youngest chick did not survive the cold snap last night with betty not on the nest when i found her this morning on the cage bottom . now i have 2 little ones to handraise so im off to mix up some fresh baby bird formula ! , she was my favourite budgie and never bit me other than a gentle nibble  and now shes in a better place

oh NO :fear ! here we go again , lost one of bettys chicks last night and when i cam out his morning she was sitting on the bottom of the cage  .looks the chicks havent been fed for a bit either . going to the avian vet in town very shortly . dont know how much more of this i can handle . i just dont get it , betty and george have not been in contact with any other birds except jack before he was moved to another cage, and hed never seen birds other than his parents ( george and betty) , so how can they all be dying suddenly
  24. MB , im just curious as 1 of my eggs hatched 1.5 days later too , what variance in temperature would cause the incubation to be lengthened ? also how many eggs were in the clutch ? and how many days between the oldest and youngest chicks ? thanks . just trying to get a better idea to compare my chicks with
  25. thankyou , this is the quarantine program i will be using in future :bliss: as opposed to my flawed previous one . now i just need to put together a list of medications i need to have at hand incase .
