  1. Am looking forward to seeing your pictures Kaz, I have no clue whatsoever on how to tell the difference..Mainly because I have never seen a Greywing Spangle! Does anyone have answers about the Opaline part too? Is she Opaline? If not, why do all her chicks have white down?
  2. Thanks, they do look almost identical don't they! Mine probably is Opaline as all her young have had white down, whether they are Opaline or not and to different dads. This is just a guess however..for those of you more experienced, does having one Opaline parent make so that the chicks' down are white instead of grey even if the chicks themselves are not Opaline? Storm is 100% a Cobalt Violet Spangle definitely and Clearflight Pied, (her breeding results show that) but is it because she is Greywing or because she just doesn't show her violet colour very well that she looks Skyblue instead of Cobalt? That is the only other probable reason, as she does not have brown markings (so is not Cinnamon) and I can't think of any other mutation that would have that effect on the colour. I think it is maybe because she is a Greywing as it looks like her colour is diluted more than just not showing properly. Won't know for sure until I breed some of her babies to a Greywing and see if any of the babies are Greywings or not though.
  3. Alright just wanted to make sure he was a green, seeing as I've never had one before. Wasn't sure if the white pins were normal or not. And the reason I wasn't sure he was a green is that there is a chance his mother is split YF instead of blue. A small chance. Oh, and GB, your input is needed..You greatly help me and most probably a lot of other people with your knowledge..you know a lot more than me that's for sure!
  4. Sorry, the one I am asking about is the green, not the second baby in the last picture. The chick I am asking about is a foster in the Spangle baby's nest.
  5. Not Spangle by the way, as neither of his parents are Spangles. Does anybody else know, as well, if he is green or not?
  6. Okay well I shall wait for you to upload your photos then.
  7. This chick is 13 days old and just starting to get pinfeathers showing his/her colour. His parents were a Sky violet male and a Grey-green female. (splits of the female are unknown, the male is not split anything as far as I know). I have never had a green budgie before, especially as a baby, so are white ends at the flight pinfeathers and white pins near his tail normal? Or is he by some chance a Yellowface? I am about 98% sure he is a green, but I want to make sure, I don't know if those white pin feathers are normal for a green or if he is something else. Thanks in advance for any help! By the way, while I'm asking things about this baby, what is his/her sex, does anyone know? I'm guessing male, as his/her cere is white all over (not counting the black) instead of more variation in the colour that I'd expect a female to have.
  8. Okay this is confusing..I've asked before if she is Opaline and people said no. It would make sense, however, as I believe Kaz mentioned in another topic how all my chicks from this one pair (Storm and her mate) all have white down, and yet all but one have not been Opalines. I can see the difference between them and one chick I fostered that is 100% not Opaline and has very grey down. She said that it could be that one of the parents is Opaline, thus making the chicks down white? If she is not Opaline then how can you guys explain all the chicks with white down that are NOT Opaline and Storm's mates have not been Opaline nor split for it..They look like this. This is the Opaline chick and her foster sibling. All of Storm's babies have looked like the Opaline baby (the one on the right, obviously), in regards to down colour. She is most definitely not Cinnamon, no trace of brown markings on her at all. Her colour does not look diluted as much as Cinnamon would dilute it. She just looks like a Skyblue Violet but is a Cobalt Violet (impossible to have the two girls in my post above, with a Mauve dad, if she is Skyblue. So rule out the thing that she is in fact Skyblue..as nubbly5 said, it would be genetically impossible.). Greywing might make the Violet go strange however, that too makes sense to me anyway. Kaz, the first picture, the one you quoted, is the father of the two girls I was asking about (hence the blue cere, I'm not saying it's one of the girls, that's their dad). All three look like Mauves don't they, right? (otherwise I've got more stuff confused with these birds..) More pictures of Storm, if that helps at all. This is what her real colour looks like (most of the time. It is a more skyblue colour a lot of the time too, but this is the most accurate I could get it), and some closeups of her wings too.
  9. I figure I'll ask this here, it's on the same subject. Out of the 6 eggs Storm laid, 2 were infertile, but the other 4 were fine. But out of that four, two hatched, one of the two died at one day old (reasons unknown) so there was only one baby that survived. The one baby that did had splayed legs. Last clutch only one out of 5 survived. Storm is 3 years old this year, and has laid and raised two clutches per year since she was 1 and 1/2. Does she need to retire permenantly? Is it her age that is causing these problems? I'm not sure, as every clutch except for one has raised only 1-2 babies. Is this normal? What possible reason could there be for not very many eggs at all hatching? What can I do to fix it? Please answer these questions, so I know what to do. Thank you.
  10. Thanks! One thing I don't understand, is are you able to get a Cinnamon ino that is not visually Lacewing and will not have Lacewing babies, but will have Cinnamon and ino babies, maybe a low percentage of Lacewings (like the Cinnamon and Albino are seperate, not together)..or if the Cinnamon and ino genes are together it is a Lacewing, looks like a Lacewing, and will have Lacewing babies? Or only Lacewings if the bird is Cinnamon and Albino both? (sorry, hope that made sense) More pictures of the baby..Kaz, you're good at this sort of thing..does she look Spangle or Opaline? I now know she is a YF Pied Cinnamon, thanks to you guys..so should I wait til she is older so you can tell or can you tell now if she is Opaline or not? Surely you can see if she has white down though, on the pictures the colours are as accurate as I can get them. (by using different lighting, not editing the photo)
  11. Alright thanks, I wasn't sure whether or not it was true that I could maybe get a Lacewing from him. Thing is, I really want a Lacewing and haven't seen any that I can buy, so I might as well try and 'make' one. Better chance would be to mate a Cinnamon split ino male to an Albino female or a Cinnamon female, correct? Then all females will be Cinnamon, and half will be Albino and Cinnamon and therefore Lacewing, right?
  12. Thank you nubbly5 and Kaz. So she is Cinnamon for sure..Any idea at the moment if she is Opaline or Spangle? Also, is it possible to get some female Lacewings from this male, seeing as he is split for ino and Cinnamon? There is a low chance of crossover of the Cinnamon and Albino, but that would make a Lacewing wouldn't it? Oh and macka, we (as in me and/or whoever you are reffering to) do not think you (ie, the more experienced breeders here) have a 'third eye' but think, and rightly so, that you's are a lot more experienced and thus can see what the chick is going to be earlier than we can. Because you can, and do. :fingerscrossed:
  13. Yes, except for the fact I don't really know how to tell the difference, even though I looked at your sticky on it. And I asked here but no one gave a definite answer as to whether her eyes were plum or not, so she could be Cinnamon, or maybe not. But I think she does look it.
  14. More pictures, if that helps. I'd like to know for sure if she is Cinnamon, Spangle, and/or Opaline. I know she's Pied, that's easy..and so is Yellowface. I'm just not sure about what else she may or may not be.
  15. Okay. Mum is a Cobalt SF Violet Clearflight Pied Spangle Greywing..dad is a Skyblue SF Violet YF2, split for ino and goodness knows what else. Highly likely she is Cinnamon, as she might have had plum eyes when she was a lot younger.
  16. What colour does this chick look like? I'm guessing a YF Pied Spangle female. She's 13 days old at the moment. Opinions?
  17. Yep, she's going fine. I put tissues in the nest, just to see if that would help stop her from slipping around (which worked), and used hair bands as a hobble until she got a little older then put the pipe cleaners back on. She is improving, I haven't taken the splint off yet though..she can stand up and move around now. She is 12 days old, any clue when I can take it off without her legs going back to the way they were?
  18. Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for!
  19. I know, but every chick I've had in the nest that is not Opaline has had what looks like white down! It's definitely not grey..I want to be able to tell by markings.
  20. Can anyone post some pictures of perhaps some 11 days old Opaline chicks, especially compared to a normal chick at the same age? I need to know how to recognise whether a baby is Opaline or not at an early age.
  21. Okay thanks. Also, her father is split Opaline (one of her sisters is Opaline) so is there anything I can look for on her to find out if she is maskig Opaline or not?
  22. I am wanting to find out if my new little girl is a Yellowface Dark-Eyed Clear or a Recessive Pied with very little colour? She has a few blue feathers on her front and some green between her wings and that is it. Her father is a Rec. Pied and her mother a Clearflight Pied split for Rec. Pied, and her brother is a DEC. The only reason I don't think she is also, is the fact of her coloured feathers. Thanks.
  23. I'll try. If I can't do that what can I do about her legs sticking out behind her?
  24. It is past her knees now, and what else can I use?
  25. Thank you all for the help, and I have one more question at the moment. The baby is lying on her front with her legs out behind her because she doesn't seem to be able to sit up with the splint on her legs, she is only 5 days old so she isn't very strong yet. That would be bad wouldn't it, we are doing this to make sure her legs grow right and she has them stuck out behind her! Do I worry about this or just leave it? If necessary I can do what I've seen someone else do..keep her in a container in a brooder, the container having tissues in it do it forces her legs in the right position, and they handfed her..Will I have to do this? I need to find out as soon as possible so if I do need to handfeed her then I can get everything ready.
