  1. Well, all four are fine this morning..I'll check again to make sure this evening, then leave them all alone til Tuesday, when number 5 is due! Here's a picture of the of them all piled on top of eachother. Look how big number one has gotten.
  2. Okay then thanks. I haven't been checking at all except every second day when a baby is due, I only happened to today because I went in to change the food and heard a lot of cheeping. Well, here's hoping they'll both be okay, I'll do what you said and check on them tomorrow morning. Next baby is due on Tuesday. (though it might hatch on Monday seeing as the other two hatched a day early? I don't know.)
  3. My gosh. I was not expecting this. I just checked on the birds (actually to change their fruit & vege dish) and looked into the nest while I was there...and there were FOUR babies!!! I knew babies 3 and 4 would hatch on the same day, but they were due tomorrow! Will they be okay, hatching early? I assume (and hope) it is not because Storm was too eager to help them hatch and they hatched early, as happened with the last clutch one hatched too early because of Storm..and died... So yeah, will they be okay or should I keep a close eye on them to make sure they aren't too weak, hatching a day early? Someone here must have had a baby hatch early, at least once.. I think they hatched themselves, as both of them hatched (and only minutes ago seeing as how wet they and their egg shells still are) but with the quick look of both of them I got, one looks normal but the other's stomach area is like..very, swollen, I guess? Round, anyway. Is this bad or am I being paranoid?
  4. A friend of mine just emailed me..I'll include the part about the lorikeet here. I need some help as to what she can feed him, what she should do, etc. Direction to any forum/website about fledgling or young lorikeets would be appreciated. She owns two budgies and her father has experience in handraising baby birds, actually in all kinds of animals..so once she knows basically what to do with him and how old he is then handfeeding won't be a problem. "New prob is that I now have 3 birds and the 3rd isn't a budgie, but a baby lorikeet.. and boy is he quiet but I don't know how to feed him ( I tried suger water in a syringe and it worked) I need to know which products are best for fledgling lorikeets. Can you do some research for me and ask some people in the forum? So can you please reply I sooo need answers. He's asleep on my lap at the moment. I'll send some photos soon when he can sit still." I'll post the photos once she sends them. I live about 40 minutes drive away from her..So please, any help as to what she should do, what to feed him, etc. Food won't be such a problem once she sends pictures so I know if he is still a baby and can't eat solids like fruit and seeds yet, I have handraising mixture that can be used for lorikeets, and she could just buy some from the petshop. Anything she should do now?? If someone can help please reply as soon as possible. Thanks very much.

A lot of them are from different languages..not sure what all of them mean Neriah means 'lamp of God' Ari means 'brave' Kato means 'twin' and Kara I changed from Kakra which means 'second born of twins'. (I have two fostered eggs in the nest, certainly not twins but they might as well be if both hatch) I think Sora means 'sky' Reia I changed from Rei, which means 'polite' Kestrel, the bird, obviously And Taya actually means 'one who is bright'
  6. Looks like a boy to me too.

I've got 2 babies and 7 more eggs to go for my pair that are breeding.. (though number 9 could be DIS) So what do you guys think of these names for the babies? I probably will change some when the babies start showing their personalities and colours, but for now I'd like to have an idea of what to call them. 1- Neriah (neh-rye-ah) 2- Rune 3- Ari (ah-ree) 4- Kato (kay-toe) 5- Sora (sore-ah) 6- Reia (ray-ah) 7- Kestrel 8- Teya (tey-ah) 9- Kara I've put the pronunciations for you because some of them are rather strange. Anyway, what do you think of these names, and any ideas for other names??
  8. Okay here are some pics of the babies. I want to have pictures of them each day (or every second day, when the babies are hatching) so here are some of the two of them. I won't have good pics of them for a while yet, I'll start taking them out of the nest to handle every day when each one is about 10 days old.
  9. Baby number two is here, and just as happy and healthy as the first! Just in case people are still reading this.
  10. Yesterday afternoon I checked on Storm and Cinder, as the first egg was 18 days old. And one of the eggs was chirping at me! Lol. So I checked on them again this morning, and there was a little baby! Born later last night I assume. Happy, wamr and fed, so that's great. I tried to get a picture, but I didn't want to disturb the mum too much..so here it is, the little pink blob among the eggs.
  11. Okay thank you. Will I have to clean out their cage as well? Would the mites be in their cage or would treating the bird kill them all?
  12. Ah okay. Where can I get ivermectin? Also, should I give her mate the ivermectin too?
  13. A question about the other pair I am also breeding at the moment. The female has scaly face mites, and I have taken out all the eggs (3 of 4 were all addled anyway and the 4th was too young to tell but I had no choice ) and removed the nest. What I need to know is: The eggs were only 1 and 1/2 weeks old at maximum, would it be alright to treat her and her mate for the mites, and then when she is fine..give her a few weeks rest then try to breed her again? She has not hatched any babies at all this year, only incubated eggs for a few weeks. So, after she is fine and has had a few weeks rest, would it stress her too much to let her breed again? I will of course give her extra calcium as all the egg-laying would be taking its toll..
  14. I didn't know what was wrong with one of my birds and suspected it might be scaly face mites..Her feet had the 'scales' on them lifting up, is the only way I can describe it. But today I just saw this crustiness on her feet and some on her beak now which wasn't there before. She has some of the crusty stuff on the top of her beak (at the bottom of her cere) and something is weird with the feathers between the side of her beak and her eyes. I'm certain it is scaly face now..I can't post any pics but is my description enough to tell you what stage it is in? If not (which it probably isn't) then can someone post pictures of the stages of scaly face and what treatment to use? I'm going soon to buy some from the petshop if they have any..but I've heard that at a certain stage it is too bad for that to work and you have to get something from the vet? Is this true, and if so, what would I have to get? At what stage would it be too bad? Is scaly face mites contagious? She has been in a cage with another bird..she was actually one of my breeding pairs, but her eggs were all addled and she looked to have scaly face so I chucked them all and removed the nest..so I want to know if I have to treat her mate as well. Also, should I totally scrub out the cage, etc, to make sure all the mites are gone? Thanks, any help is appreciated.
  15. 1- A Light Green Spangle 2- Green Spangle 3- Cobalt Spangle? Has a Violet factor 5- Green Normal? 6- YellowFace Spangle 7- Light Green Opaline 8- Yellowface Cobalt? Those are my guesses. But don't quote me on those, wait til someone more experienced comes!
  16. Seems like Storm has decided to stop at 8 eggs, all of which are fertile and alive... First is 18 days old on this Wednesday! :laughter:
  17. Okay thank you all. So if this happens my options would be.. Throw out the eggs Take them to someone who has pairs able to be foster parents Or incubate them myself and raise them from day 1... I think taking them to someone else is the best idea, one of my pairs breeding at the moment is part of a little joint breeding project with me and a friend, so I can easily give her some of the eggs if they do get abandoned or anything. Thanks!
  18. Well there are ones where you have to manually turn them, and ones that automatically turn the eggs but I'm not sure how.. If the incubator has an even temp throughout then there would be no need to turn them? Or would you still have to because the embryo would get stuck to one side or something? So if I do have eggs abandoned it is worth trying to incubate them if I have foster parents that will be available when the eggs hatch?
  19. Okay. I would try to incubate the eggs (it is worth trying rather than throwing them away, at least if you try they have a small chance, better than none) and then if I had a pair that had not been right (for fostering eggs) at that time, when the eggs hatch I can give them the newborns? Would that work? Then I would not have to feed the babies, except maybe once, a while after hatching so it is strong enough to call for food from its new parents? Is incubating eggs really hard? Do the incubators that automatically turn eggs break them or addle them or are they fine to use? Do you have to turn eggs if they are 5 days from hatching? (or less)
  20. If you were breeding and the mother escaped or abandoned the eggs, and you had no other pairs breeding as foster parents...Could you get an incubator and incubate them yourself? If you had to, what are the postives and negatives for incubating the eggs yourself? How would you do it? (I mean, how and when would you turn the eggs, etc) How hard is it and should you not do it unless absolutely necessary? Could you change an incubator for eggs and use it as a brooder for chicks? I think that's all of my questions! Just curious, trying to research that kind of thing before breeding this time, in case anything does go wrong.
  21. Yep same with me..I mentioned it a while ago but it still doesn't work.
  22. Anybody? I candled the eggs today and all are fertile and developing...so if all 7 happen to hatch and survive, what do I do? Plus, I think she might lay an eighth too..
  23. Looks like a girl to me.
  24. Okay thank you all. I've checked and the brooder temp went from 31 degrees Celsius during the night and got to 34 or so during the day. That's alright isn't it? A bit hot for 2 week old chicks but I can cool it down a little. Any improvements I can do with it now, more?
  25. Okay I have the light on and will keep it on for 24 hours and monitor how the temperature changes.. Is it possible you can post some pics of your set up? And ideas on what I could improve/change would be great!
