  1. Hey have you told him it's water restrictions! All the water he is just splashing around. He is just beautiful, I can't wait to bring one of my babies in, just waiting for the right one, I'm sure I know when the right one comes along because although I love all budgies I think it will be love at first sight.
  2. Oh AV, He is a stunner, I'm sure you will get so much enjoyment from him. And oh yeah I'm so sorry I promised to bring the breeding cage with internal breeding box to the last meeting and forgot all about it. Will it be too late if I bring it to the next meeting? Anyway just let me know and I promise not to forget my promise next time :hap: .
  3. Hi Krosp, I don't know how your doing it, it would be killing me not knowing and I do so hope that your body corp are sensible and realize what wonderful animals budgies are, and grant you permission to have one. Good Luck and I'll be keeping an eye on this post.
  4. Hi toohp, I know what your saying, you feel like you should say something for the sake of the birds, but you don't want to appear to be interferring. If its a cafe could you prehaps leave a annyomous letter in an envelop on a table next time you go up there, then they will aleast get the info that wire is no good for perching and the birds will end up with servere foot problems and give examples of appropiate perching material, because they may just not be aware of this problem. It also means that you're not necessarily putting yourself in a situation which may be difficult. Then a little while after leaving the letter check and see if they have taken this advice. And then if they haven't maybe then you may need to say something directly and put a positive spin on it eg. Hi It's obvious how much you guys love your birds and your avairies are great but I not sure whether you realize that wire can damage their feet, a couple of branches would be much better and you can use good old gum tree branches even. This is just my opinion and may be not what you would consider appropiate but this is probably what I would do. Give them a chance to fix it before personally confronting them.
  5. with the vegies like sweet pototoe, beans, peas are these cooked or raw and what about the beetroot - Canned? At the moment the corn and silverbeet I give them is just washed and given raw. I also have no native trees, shrubs in my garden, does anyone have any idea where I may be able to obtain some native flowers/leaves? I am in the South East Region of Melbourne.
  6. Thanks so much for letting me know I think I will have to invest in a blender. :rip:
  7. Thanks so much for your responses, I will keep a very close eye on the young ones, and will probably take them out really soon, just want to make sure that they are eating on their own. I have been given some advice from a breeder I was speaking to tonight who puts in a small wooden box in the bottom of the breeding cage so the young chicks have somewhere to hide whilst still being left in the breeding cage to learn to eat and finish developing a little. What soft food do you give the babies? At the moment I am only supplying seed, silver beet and corn. Also can someone let me know if I was right in my assumption that fledging is when the young are ready to be taken from the breeding cage?
  8. Firstly CONGRATULATIONS on bringing your little one back what a thrill and I hope I never get a feather plucking budgie that would be I agree heart breaking and I would imagine very detrimental to the little ones health and possibly fatal?
  9. My 3 baby birds which were born 3.8.08, 5.8.08 and the 6.8.08 so all are between 4 and 5 weeks old, are now all coming and going from the breeding box and the hen has today laid her first egg for a second round. When is an appropriate time to remove the chicks to a youngster's cage? And although I have used the word fledging in the topic title, I'm only assuming that means when they are ready to be moved from parents? Am I right?
  10. Yes, very interesting, both sides of the topic have pro's and con's.
  11. Yeah Kaz your on the mark with it being a very old topic, BUT hey we want to know "Chucky are you a star?" Have your pictures been taken, are you in print? What happened?Or have you been sworn to secrety?
  12. Thanks guys, I didn't think that it would be a problem but if in doubt it is always worth checking. Thanks again
  13. Hi, I recently visited a breeder who said he gives his aviary birds probotic then liquid calcuim in their water on alternating days, I have got some probotic and am going to give it to my birds, but I forgot to ask if it is also a good idea to give the probotic to the birds that are breeding (I know calcuim is fine for breeding budgies, but not sure about the probotic). Can someone help me with this query. :hap:
  14. Hi, Yep I am also a fairly new club member at ED in Vic and I'm loving it, and I think its great for the hobby, I had bred budgies before but just pet types and I figured if I was doing that, I might aswell join a club and try and breed some show birds. Best thing I have ever done, although I have not even had the guts to take a bird to a club meeting yet, now that some of my chick are fledging it won't be to long before I do. Part of me is excited to take a self bred bird and a part of me is scared I will make a fool of myself :hap: , but I do know they're only there to help and you do have to start somewhere. Anyway enjoy your club, I know I do.
  15. Hi, I have recently posted a topic on aviaries and have put some demension in, but most of my ideas have come from budgie books. It's fine to get ideas from the forum but it is a very individual thing, with so many contributing factors that even aviaries which may be built from the same plan would probably turn out totally different. If you have a querie on aviaries just ask the forum and I'm sure someone will be able to give you some advice and then its up to you whether this advice suits your situation and whether you wish to act on it. You may be lucky and get a few different opinions which you can then see if any of the opinions help. Let us know what you have in mind avairy wise, so we can get an idea of your situation then we may be able to contribute some ideas. :hap:
  16. He is just adorable!!, I know I'm too late for the name and Buddy is a good strong name, but with your first description of how he was curled up in your dressing gown I was going to say because he is a pied how about "Cuddle pie" . But buddy it is.
  17. G'day and welcome, I would like to say good luck with Blinky laying her next egg in the nest box, I keep my fingers crossed for you. Budgie breeding is a wonderful experience although can be hard work, but the beautiful chicks are more than worth the effort.
  18. Thanks Kaz, What would we do without the likes of you? I'm pretty hopeless with computers, shows doesn't it. Anyway thanks again.
  19. My dad organized some melamite cut to my sizing for my husband and I to make into breeding boxes. So I thought I might post a couple of photo's of them. This is what they look like made up. They're 60cm long, 45cm heigh and 30cm deep. They have a small sliding door on the top right corner to mount a breeding box to the cage, but can also be used without which I thought was a good idea. I had a bit of trouble finding someone to make these cage fronts and they were a little on the costly side but I think they will be worth it.
  20. Yep, I'm boring because yep I guessed carrot after thinking "quick" it said to think of a vegetable quickly, then finally carrot jumped into my mind. So what does that tell you 1 I'm a bit slooww and 2 I'm a majority. Not unique like I thought I was.
  21. My Dad who is in the building trade tells me that there are no restriction as far as 3 X 3 sheds go you could fill your whole back yard up with them and not have to get any permits or have any restrictions. And my neighbours are all pretty cool with the budgies anyway so I don't think (knock on wood) that anyone would have any complaints. If they do I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. Extend the concert and just move the whole lot over I suppose.Oh and by the way I did notice that when we put the shed onto the concert I could then smell the fumes of the sealer so I have since opened the window and the door of the shed and won't let a budgie within Koowee until the vapour has totally gone. I have I bit of outfitting to do to the breeding room aswell, so it will still be some time before I can get the birds in there.
  22. Here are some more photos now that they have feathered up. This is the normal blue which looked a little like a yellow face in the earlier photo. He's the oldest chick. Here's my middle chick. And finally the baby, well they're all babies but you know what I mean. I've been told that the blue seems to have good depth of body but I wouldn't have any idea as yet, I've got so much to learn and also I was only told this off some photos and they can be a little deceptive so give him a few more weeks and I'll have to take him along to a club meeting for some true life options. But here's hoping he turns out to be an alright sort.
  23. Hi everyone, I've been wanting to post this post for some time now, but was worried everyone would lose interest waiting for the progress pictures, but I couldn't wait any longer so here it is. This was the slab which seemed to take forevere to come along. Then came the shed which we had to move off the slab because my dad gave me some really good quality sealer for the concert, but then yet again I had to wait for some nice weather to be able to seal it which of course took over another 2 1/2 weeks. Now here is how it stands today. I now need to put the insultation in the breeding room and we are going to put a clear whirly thing on the roof for ventilation and light although it will need added lighting, a fluro and maybe a skylight aswell. Once finished it is going to have obviously the breeding shed which is 3 metres X 3 metres then a 1 metre walkway between the shed and 2 flights which will be 1.5 wide and 3 metres long, Dads coming over later this week (more waiting) to work out how we are going to attach the walkway and flights to the shed, you know the boring stuff like which angle the roof needs to be and where the guttering for the rain needs to be placed and how much of the flights need to be sheltered etc and so on. I like having the enclosed walkway so if any budgies do happen to escape they won't get far. Anyway if anyone has any ideas for my flights please let me know as I need all the help I can get.
  24. Hi MB, Fantastic job on the dog kennel, and what a cutie! Is your other dog the same breed? And whilst asking about the breed what exactly is she? Dutch hound?
  25. I'm so glad that he seems better, lets hope this (seems) turns into a he IS better, I hate hearing when our beloved budgies are sick. Good luck and I hope all is well.
