  1. In future be very very sure of their age before putting down to breed. That's the thing, I thought I was sure.... Will he be okay? I know the worry is stronger with hens because of egg binding and all that, but will he be okay? He's been great with feeding. Half the time anymore the mum is out on a perch preening and playing and HE is the one feeding the chick. He's been a great dad.
  2. 07 is probably the only one that makes sense from what you said about the numbers after the letters... all the bands start with letters first and you said if the numbers are after the letters (the b. section) that is the breeder ID not the year of birth. Do I have this wrong ? Am I misunderstanding you? The number that go across the legband and not around the legband are the year of hatching OH... I'm sorry... I got ya now... okay... so all but this gold one should be okay... the gold one you say looks to be about a year old??? I bred him already.... is that really bad? I thought the gold was 00 or 06.... ???? I can't pull him out now, he's helping feed the chick? And they've been mating again for the next go round, what should I do now??

  4. The breeder of him may not have been using breeders rings...he may have just put any old rings on to id a family line of chicks. Then the 07 and 08 I've seen have nothing to do with their age... so I have no idea how old any of my birds are besides my 24 day old baby... that's just great?
  5. This doesn't make sense then... I have purple and blues and they aren't even on this chart??? and if the part c. is the year of birth, they are saying he's born in 92???? I'm lost? I'll post pics in a second of these other bands.
  6. This is what his leg band says? AAA 00 92 So that doesn't mean 2000?? Why would they band their legs if it doesn't tell you how old they are? Now I'm wondering if ANY of my bands are right??Of all my birds I only have 5 with bands these are their band #'s... all but one have the numbers after letters?? AAA 07 E43358 - black, AAA 08 E18981 - black, AAA 08 8229 - blue, 07 TF - purple That's not good Liv... I bred him! He's the father of my chick I've been showing off!
  7. Wishful thinking I guess... either way I think he's gonna be a bute! Thanks KAZ.
  8. I just looked at the leg band of my cock that fathered my only surviving chick. The band is gold which I though was 2006, but it looks like is says 00 which would be 2000, that means he's 8 years old??? He's to old to be breeding then isn't he? Is it possible over here in the US that they just used a gold band for 06 even though it says 00? I got him at the pet store. Does he look 8 years old to everyone? This is what he looked like when I first bought him... And this is his leg band... And this is what he looks like now... (almost a year later)... Some advice is you have it?
  9. So here's some new pics from today... everyone still think not opaline... dom pied?... But his markings are lovely... check him out.
  10. okay here's more updates... chick is now 24 days old... (born 9-12) I'm lovin' him!
  11. Well from a lesson Pie taught me the other day on Opalines... you will know if he is Opaline or Split if you have any visual Opaline cocks in your clutch of chick, because the boys need one gene from dad and one from mum... You said the mum and some of the chicks are Opaline, so do you know if any of those Opaline chicks are cocks yet? If I understood Pie correctly, then if any are cocks then both parents (including this cock in question) would be Opaline or Split at least... (Pie please correct me if I'm wrong). By the way this is a gorgeous bird... what ever it is (which I'm eager to know) it is stunning !
  12. Congrats... and well deserved!!! Good for you!
  13. I don't know that I would want to give them back knowing they are sit. Two sick birds amoung maybe hundreds... do you really think the breeder will focus his attention enough to help them get better? I know you spend money for a good healthy bird and if that's not what you get then you should get what you paid for... but I don't know that I could give a bird back knowing it was sick and may be left to just die? Is this a good breeder you've purchased from before? Do you know that he will give them the health attention they need? Did you find out exactly what's wrong with them? Is it something that you can treat or too serious that you will probably lose them anyway? I feel for ya Neat. I hate seeing them ill or death upon them.
  14. Congrats! Looks like you're gonna have your hands full... :budgiedance: :budgiedance:
  15. Thank you both. Pie, that was a great explaination. Libby, I do want to learn and trying my best. I think I understand now and it looks that I still have alot ot learn!! Thanks for the link I'm gonna check it out now.

I do have a suggestion that will at least allow you to enjoy your birds while waiting. I made my aviary indoor aviary out of a storage unit shelf I bought from Lowes and wire. As I have paired off birds for breeding and realized that some other birds needed to be seperated I have found that my aviary is now split into 4 equal sections. So, what I'm suggesting is make a nice small aviary out of one of these units like I did and then not to waste the money you spend on that you can later use this unit for breeding cages in your new aviary set up. Here's a picture of my aviary before I split it into 4 sections (minus the nesting boxes if you don't plan to colony breed)... and here is a photo now of the aviary after I turned into 4 breeding cages (minus all the "pretties" on it to help blend it into my living room) just by adding the shelves back to the unit. It just might be something to think about.... because in the long run once you build your aviary this piece won't be a waste...
  17. Sorry KAZ, I should have taken that into consideration... I live in USA, PA and also have an indoor aviary so the need to "cool things down" here is much different than over there I assume. Sorry Karthik... that's my I'm not an expert... I don't think of the details of "location". You are good KAZ, you know your stuff and explain it well.
  18. Unbelievable... she is soooo pretty! Can I ask how you get that mutation? What were her parents? I have a Sky Blue YF2 Greywing split to recessive cock paired in a breeding cage right now with a Grey Opaline hen... is there anyway I could get a chick like this out of them??? Or are the sex linked mutation not with the right bird to achieve it? If you have a Yf2 sky greywing to a grey opaline hen you can't get greywing in there unless the hen is split to it and opaline won't show unless the cock is split to it. You'll get 50% yf normals and 50% normals unless they both carry any of those genes hidden (recessive, greywing or opaline) Darn!... But that's still good, I'm sure they will still be pretty... but NO WHERE NEAR how attractive Paradise is!! I love her. Can you say ENVIOUS!
  19. Wait Pie, you are doing such a good job explaining this, but I just got lost again. So in this clutch there can be no dom pied girls? I might have to PM you if that's not what you're saying cause you just lost me again. I understand now how a male or female gets to be an opaline (based on the number of genes needed from their parents) but in this case I know I don't have an opaline, I have a dom pied. But previously I was told that the dom pieds in this clutch could be boy or girl.... so is that not true, can only girls be opaline and only boys be dom pied split for opaline (besides the usual "suprises" that every clutch gives us)?

I agree... it just might be a blessing. You can save and plan for what your really want instead of just making do with the space you have. I live in USA PA and don't have the luxury of outdoor aviary so I had to settle for small and simple. You will be happier in the end of getting what you want from the get go. Good luck when it happens and keep us updated.
  23. okay thanks, I personally look forward to finding this out. Can't wait.
  24. okay, I think I understand that now... wow! So, so far there is no signs of opaline in this chick and we know it is dom pied. Now, dom pied chicks in this case can be either male or female, so am I correct in saying if it is a boy it will be dom pied split for opaline and if it's a girl it will just be dom pied? (I'm probably killing this topic to death, but I really want to understand this.)
  25. Regarding the disinterested hen.... give it time. I have a breeding pair in a cage right now for 5 weeks and they are just now exploring the nest box. I also have another pair that was in the cage together for 3 weeks before the cock would even let the hen sit on the same branch as her... now they are finally adjusting to each other and the cage... no box activity yet, but I'm sure they'll get there. Is you hen maybe out of season? Is her cere really crusty brown? She just might not be in the mood right now and a bit longer just might be what you need to catch her back in condition again? The second issue I think is just the change. Alot of birds taken from an aviary and put into a cage have a little bit of issues going into a much smaller breeding cage. She will adjust. Putting her back in the aviary made her feel "at home" again, but also allowed the risk of fights. You gave her the means to breed then took them away and then gave them back again... she just might not be ready yet. I would try one more time, but this time put her in the breeding cage first without the added stress of the nest box... let her get use to being in the cage vs. the aviary first then introduce the nest box. I hope this helps... it's suggestions given to me before on here and it worked.... the key is patience and not to do too much too fast. Baby steps! Good luck
