I Can Hear Chirping From Egg #1
Sorry to hear that. I agree with MB. If it had a hole or crack since the beginning it probably dried out and never really made it far into development. I had this happen with one egg in my very first clutch this year. I was advised that I could "patch it" but even sometimes trying to patch it can make it harder for the chick to hatch out when it comes time. Well keep us updated on the next arrival... sorry your second bub didn't come to be.

Swingers?
Thank you for all the advice. I am about to move them to the holding cage this morning and was just wondering how long to try this for?

Hen On 6 Eggs
That's a good start. Just shred them up and give it a try. If you know your birds like the egg food and eat it well you can mix the veggies right into the egg mix if you want. I have some birds that won't touch the stuff but if it's mixed together they do pretty well with it.

A Few More Of Cosmo
no, I'm not seeing YF2? I do see the tinge of yellow in his wings. Best way to tell is to look UNDER his wings. Are the feathers under his wings white/blue, if so he is cobalt YF 1. YF1 allows his true color (cobalt) to still shine through on his body. If he were YF2 his body color would be washed over and appear to be some shade of "green" color (seafoam green= sky blue YF2, etc...). Also he looks young and may not have finished his first molt yet? I have a YF2 sky blue he is a looker but I love Cosmo, I have a soft spot for YF1 birds!!

I Can Hear Chirping From Egg #1
Just wondering if egg two hatched?? You said it was more round then the first one and it had a chip in it. First, I know both my hens first eggs were different shaped. The first egg in each of their clutches were more pointy on one end but the rest of the eggs in both clutches were nice and smooth round. It seems to be something with "pinching out that first one". Also you mentioned the chip in the egg. Did this egg have a chip from early on or just in the last day or so? Is it a chip like damage or a chip like the bub is breaking through? Just curious to see if number two made it or not? Le us know. Fingers are crossed.

Swingers?
I will... I won't try this til morning (it's 7:18 pm here). Then I can watch all day and see what kind of language I see between them. Thanks so much. I wanted to try this but thought I should just wait it out, but now it's been over 6 weeks and still nothing so... I want to give it a try. It's not that the birds won't even go near each other, it just seems that one from each pair is more interested than the other and I thought MAYBE if I group them they will switch partners and the two that WANT IT NOW :fly: can go for it and I'll let the other two take their time. Thanks again MB.

Egg
they usually lay every other day but not always... give it time and just keep checking a couple times a day. You never know you may wake up in the morning and there will be a second egg. there's no real "rule" on how many eggs a hen will lay. she could have one she could have 10... never know. even if she's nesting on just one... it just means she has more time and energy to care for it when it hatches :fly: keep us updated

Swingers?
You really think so, MB? I'm not planning on "colony" breeding. Once I know that there has been a pairing or mating between them I will divide them, but you don't think it would hurt any to try?

Swingers?
okay so I put 4 pairs in to breeding cages that last week of July. My first pair as many of you know had a clutch of 5 and none were fertile. The second pair had a clutch of 5 and only one chick resulted from it. My other two pairs have been paired up since then and neither have done antyhing. My one hen is very much in condition with a dark brown almost alburn color cere and the cock from the other pair is just sitting by the nest box trying his hardest to get his hen to give it a go. Now I know I could try to switch the pairs and try the two that seem ready to roll together and put the other two who don't seem so eager together, BUT... CAN I.... put all 4 together and see who chooses who and then pair them off as they have selected each other? I don't want to risk having to start over again waiting another 4 weeks or more for them to rebond to the new mate, but it was suggested before to put an extra male in with a pair I had that was not interested to see if it would spark the cock that wasn't interested. I don't have them paired to obtain any certain mutations or colors so it doesn't really matter to me who chooses who. Just want to know if I can put two pairs together and if they don't naturally select one from the other pair I can just put them back as they were??? I hope that wasn't confusing.

Leg Band
I will take this to heart and am much more educated now. But please know this... I did wait over 6 months before breeding him. I got him on 12-30-07 and I did not put him in a breeding cage with a mate until the week of July 28, 2008. Prior all my birds including him and his mate where in the aviary. He and his mate produced their first egg on August 15, 2008.

Would This Be A Problem?
I agree with the others. As long as they are all being fed it doesn't matter how many days apart they are. You figure if you have a clutch of just 5 eggs by the time the last one hatches the frist one is almost 10 days old, so size difference is always a factor in all clutches. I agree with the others about fostering if necessary or if you have a hen that already has eggs due to hatch any time now or has a chick or two hatched out already put the first egg with her and it will hatch in the middle of all her babies and be in same size comparison to her chicks. Good luck.

Hen On 6 Eggs
I had the same thing happen with my hen just a few weeks ago. I was advised to put millet spray in there with her and also have alot of "soft foods" available (but not in the nest box) for easy and fast feeding. Soft foods like greens, grated carrots and eggs, etc... it's easier for her to eat and much easier for the cock to fill up on and regergitate back to her, but also of course keep plenty of seed available too. Im frightened to give her veggies because the eggs are close to hatching and chicks cant have veggies Jodie that's not true. Anything that your adult parakeets eat is "safe" for your chicks. The parents regergitate what they eat to their chicks including eggs, veggies, etc... In fact is is very important that your breeding budgies have these kinds of food to stay in top shape for nurturing their young and keeping their strength and weight up themselves. I'm not sure who told you they can't have that but if you are giving your keets ( budgies ) foods from the approved food list for budgies anything they are eating is good for the chicks too.

Stuck
If it's a cockatiel cage the bars are probably too wide. Did you just get him? Do you have other birds that this bird can see? I have a hen that did this same thing. She could see the other birds and was in a cage by herself and was trying despritely to get out. Even in a parakeet cage she was able to get her head out at the top corner were the corners rounded out. He may calm down a bit. Let us know how you make out.

Question About Baby Budgie
I agree with KAZ... this is a picture of my baby and he too has "some junk in the trunk".... I'm sure it's normal, but if you want to post a picture we can take a look?

Chicks In The Nestbox
It's ironic KAZ, I myself have been trying this same thing for the last few days. My chick (only one) is 26 days old today and I have been putting millet in for some time now, but just recently started putting seed in because the hen was throwing out all the bedding to prepare for another clutch. So, for the chick not to have any bedding I figured what would seed hurt. The mum and the bub would eat it rather than throw it out. I myself have not "witnessed" the chick eating the seed yet but there signs that someone is eating (but that may be mum), not sure. So thumbs up to you on this, I have tired it myself and hope it works as well for me as it has for you.

Leg Band
Should she be alone or can I put her in with my other non mating females right now? What do you suggest. And how long of a "rest" do you recomend for her? And as for the male, he is the young one, but as long as he's not having to feed his mate and the chick he should do well, right? I also wanted to bring up one more point. It has been stated that this cock was maybe 6 weeks old when I got him and the gold band indicated he was born in 08. I kept thinking of when I bought him so I checked my purchase reciept and I bought him from the pet store on 12-30-07.... ??? So now I'm confused again as to how old he really is? If I bught him in 07 there's no way this band is gold for 08??? Any comments?

Could Someone Identify Her Please?
okay, hopefully she can get a picture for us. But you say it's pale yellow, not white or blue???? Interesting! Can't wait to see the picture.

Leg Band
The chick is 25 days old now and there is only one. He seems to do most of the feeding anyway, do you think I should remove the hen and just let dad finish so I'm able to seperate them? As long as they are both in there I can't stop them from breeding and the hen has already thrown out all the nesting material from the nest box that the chick is in. Is it bad to remove the hen instead at this stage of the chicks life?
