  1. The best way I have found to solve the problem of soil floors is to and put down a layer of the very small mesh (is it 5mm or something) that s designed to exclude mice, that way even if they try to dig under they won't be able to get through. You can dig down atleast an inch or two if you want and cover it up so that it is buried.
  2. I colony breed but (touch wood) haven't any problems yet. I notice most of the people that colony breed are in the same situation as me, would like to but don't have the space or are renting and can't devote a room to their budgies. I have decided to do a bit of both as I have space for one breeding box but that's about my limit. My aviary birds are very cruisy and they seem to have their pecking order worked out well and don't get into brawls. In fact my first female to choose a box has chosen the lowest box in the aviary! I would like to be able to pull out one pair though when there is a colour I really want.
  3. Sex linked genes aren't dominant they are just always going to show up in the female budgie. I understand what you are saying Elly. I have found one bloke who talks about using a lutino split for albino to a lutino hen to produce creminos, don't know what other genetics were going on ther though.
  4. Do you get any normals (as in patterned) from that pairing or does the albino wash the colour out of all the babies and then some get the goldenface? Also is there an issue hree of which gender each parent is with regard to sex lankages, etc.?I imagine though that if you bred it to a lutino the yellowface woud be there but you wouldn't see it. You could however then use those babies in crossings to an albino to get creminos and lutinos....I think
  5. okay so I would get a mix of Albino and Lutino babies then.
  6. I think that would do quite well. Just make sure there are no gaps, they can squeeze through pretty small spots. My father in law uses a piece of plumbers plastic pipe witha cap on each end, he made a very small hole in one end and places a set mousetrap inside it. Nothing other than a mouse can get in that way and when the trap is set off he just takes the end cap off to get the mouse out. Just make sure tht you don't have baby qails at the time as they might fit.If you find it isn't working you could always place the flashing at the bottom with a layer of plastic up a bit higher so they can't get a grip.
  7. As a total sucker for yellow faced varieties can anyone tell me what parents you need to get this? I'm also trying to work out how the albino and lutino genes are related to each other, what are the reslts if you breed an albino with a lutino. I have tried searching for this info but I'm running out of places to look so if anyone can point me to a good source of info or answer my questions that would be great. Most of the breeding charts I have found talk about relating each colour to same colour/normal or split not to other totally different varieties.
  8. okay, well maybe one of each then for my fallows which I'm told is the same and hopefully my lutino is a female. There is that distinct paleness around the nostrils and the shading from top to bottom which was why I grabbed her as a female originally so hopefully my instincts were correct. If I breed her to a white based bird is there a chance I may get albinos? Daz she is basically pure yellow, there is barely any paleness in her flights/tail is that normal?
  9. They are only rescue babies essentially but they are cuties. They haven't got the best background so quarantine will be very strict until I am positive they are 100%. One is quite skinny(a fallow) so she will be getting plenty of extra food. The one I am most pleased with is the lutino.
  10. This particular girl won't be doing any breeding, she has splayed legs. I rescued her and plan to keep her in permanent quarantine as a nanny for my fledglings- she's very smoochy with the other birds she is with at the moment so hopefully do well. I've ust seen a few in this coloour recently and was curious. I find the pattern quite lovely, is there such thing as a fully flecked bird?
  11. There is abig discussion of feeding meat in this thread http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....20&start=20
  12. Just a thought you could try to disassociate your hand from the bath process by either wearing a glove or catching him with a towel. He might not be happy about it still but at least he won't associate your hand with bad experiences only play time.
  13. Not a great picture but she wasn't being helpfulAAAARGGHHHHI've resized that three times so far! Just doesn't like me today...
  14. Fine... give me a few minutes and I'll get back to you
  15. I have a opaline hen that has opaline markings on her head. Is this common? I find it quite pretty personally although I assume it's no good as far as showing. Can anyone give me any insight?
  16. So I guess I just have to be patient then I was so excited when I got them as I thought they were all females(I'm very low on girls), now for all I know three of them may be boys... :sigh:
  17. Yep, my research suggests they are fallows, they have plum eyes with white iris rings. I have ust discovered though that I'm not sure how to sex them as the fallows have the same issues with sexing as lutinos ...:sigh:
  18. I am under the impression that lutinos can be a little hard to sex, does anyone have any hints?
  19. Trying again with some photos that caused problems...I have two the same which I thought were pied but Kaz has suggested are fallows. They have red eyes with a white iris ring and are pure white with blue bums, they both appear to be carrying violet. And a back view of the olive girls so you can see her head/wings
  20. Hi some new budgies today, can you guys help me with the colours as they are colours I dont currently keep so another little learning curve. (there are two pieds that are basically identical). You'll have to excuse them looking scruffy as they are moulting, plus they are out of sorts from the transport, etc. We have an olive green opaline? I notice her markings are very pale on the head, what does this mean.
  21. Nope, checked there when I bought my soup mix on Monday, if I can't find them I won't worry, they liked the soup mix and CHICK peas :hap:
  22. Can anyone tell me where to get dry mung beans from I've looked at the supermarket but couldn't find them.
  23. I meant for outside the aviary too, the mice chew through it to get in.
