  1. Great idea! If you did a new one every couple of days you could just swap it over for them. They will love you even more if you leave it long enough for it to get seed heads on it :budgiedance:
  2. I'm a domestic goddess SW That being said it has taken eight years to learn enough random stuff to finish my three year degree :budgiedance:
  3. I know Pepicek's mummy is from the Czech, that's why they have headed back over there. They were very sad they couldn't take their baby with them Does Pepicek mean something Zebra? We call him Pepi because my little boy can't say his name
  4. Take his food away for a ew hours and see if it decreases in size, then give it back and see if it goes up again. That might answer a few questions for you
  5. But is it the gland that is the 'lump' or the crop? If goitre in birds is the same as humans then it would be the gland which wouldn't come and go it would be always present. SG said the condition came and went.
  6. If you were going to the trouble of pulling it apart to seal the edges into the wood join I would use thin lino instead of contact, tougher, less fumes and won't get holes or tear easily.
  7. Have you seen the [pics of AV's hen which had a lump on her chest which turned out to be her crop?
  8. But teflon only releases fumes if it is heated dry, so as long as you don't overheat it and you put atleast something moist like butter or oil on it before it gets really hot then it shouldn't release any fumes
  9. When he does get to that point (and I know it's a long way off, but it will creep up on you ) what he needs to decide is whether he wants t care for animals i the wild or animals in captivity. My course tends towards care of wild animals, I did things like go to Heron Island (north queensland) and did research on crabs, fish and sharks (we got to hold small non bitey sharks in our bare hands!), lots of snorkelling with turtles and coral , excursions to look at endangered species breeding programs at Healesville Sanctuary including Pygmy possums and Helmeted honeyeaters and a trip to Far North Queensland (Cairns and Cape Tribulation) which was mostly botany but we also met Cassowaries, crocodiles and LOTS of leeches , La Trobe University also has a huge wildlife sanctuary which many classes spend time in. Captive animal courses(atleast at La Trobe) spend much more time in the labs, they study captive populations of small native animals like dunnarts and put alot more emphasis on the physiology/anatomy of the animals whereas the wild animal course is more behavioural/habitat based. Anyway I won't bore you but it's something for him to think about for the next few years. I'm happy to answer questions if he is interested at any time.
  10. The chaplain sounds lovely. I have worked as a vet nurse and I have just finished a degree in zoology/conservation/botany and while I was at uni I worked for 'prospective students', I used to take kids for tours around the uni and talk to them about the different courses when they were in year 9-12. He sounds like he would do great in animal husbandry but like me he might struggle with the emotional side of working for a rescue organisation (there are too many perfectly healthy animals that have to be put to sleep for my liking ) I reckon he would do great at something like zoo keeper
  11. I love goldenface violets
  12. Legally I believe that they have an obligation to only supply you with a healthy bird, maybe check with the RSPCA as they should know the legalities. I'm pretty sure that they must either provide veterinary care at their cost or take the animal back to be treated as they see fit if that condition existed before you purhased the animal. I would 1. Call the RSPCA and find out your rights 2. Call the shop and inform them of your rights and their obligations and then 3. Follow up with vet care as required.
  13. Tepid is kind of warmer than cool but cooler than warm Just cooler than body temp
  14. You can cut a mini size collar out of an ice cream container lid and simply stabe the two ends together
  15. Not warm water, cool (officially it's tepid ) water as burn can still be made worse by warm water even after the fact. The saline water won't hurt but it should be cooled to room temp before use.
  16. I would take him to a vet Mralo. Have you got an avian vet? If not tell us where in Melbourne you are we might be able to recommend someone. Also for the time being I would bathe his fett in some cool water.
  17. I have a huge terracotta pot saucer (it's about 2ft wide), it's only about 1 1/2 inches deep so they have heaps of seed in it but it's shallow so nothing gets wasted, I replace it every second day.
  18. When I was working as a vet nurse someone brought their pup in for desexing and when we opened her up she had male and female internal organs so you never know
  19. I'll take one after the boys head to bed, although it is so light that I'm not sure you could see it in a photo but I'll give it a go, just for you
  20. She(I think) is perfect The good news is that while it didn't matter what sex she was I was hoping for two males as I have chick requests. It looks as though her two clutch mates are both boys so it has turned out to be the perfect clutch She has very light vioet suffusion on her rump and chest so it will be interesting to see how much it darkens up as she moults
  21. Watching? I wouldn't ever post a picture of them in not many clothes or anything like that but I don't see an issue with posting a smiley picture.
  22. He has been here for a liitle while now, this is just my first post He did a short quarantine since he hasn't seen another bird for over four years(since he was a baby) and is in the best of health. You guys should know me better than that
  23. Thought a few here might like to see this picture of my two chicks. You can see the colour just starting to show on the bottom chick which has coloured markings whereas the beginning feathers on the top chick are white so they don't give the chick a dark tinge.
  24. Oh AV, you would be smuggling him home in your pocket if you met him. He flies over and talks in my ear and he gives little kisses on your nose He is I swear the sweetest little budgie you have ever met! The DF spangle chick I have in the nest at the moment should be coming out of the nest just in time to become Pepi's cage buddy
  25. Actually I suspect those sort of kids would be less destructive
